Welcome to our new List Administator. Hello, just a reminder about my Stephens interest. My 3G grandfather, William Alfred Tuthill, born c 1810, Marylebone, London, and his children were all TUTHILL by birth, given as such in BMD and IGI records, but were given as STEPHENS in English census records from 1841 to 1901. I have found no reason for this name change. Research this year has found a possible sister for William Alfred Tuthill. Her name was Ure Stephens, which made me think that possibly William was born as Tuthill, his mother remarried a Stephens, and Ure was born. This would make William and Ure half brother and sister, with William's real name being Tuthill, but brought up as Stephens. However, IGI has thrown up 2 possibilities for Ure's baptism as Ure Tuttle/Pattle in 1815, Marylebone, so it is more likely that they were full brother and sister. >From IGI/certificates/census IGI) - Ure's parents were Robert and Mary/May Marriage cert of William) - William's father was Robert Tuthill, bricklayer Birth cert of Ure's daughter) - Ure's maiden name was Stephens 1851 census) - Ure's mother was Mary Stephens, formerly builder's wife I think that maybe builder/bricklayer could be the same thing. In 1841 census William gives his name as William Tuthill STEPHENS , which is the only record fror him to have both names together. His son, John Tuthill, baptised several of his children with Stephens as middle name, but also called himself Stephens in census records. (Children's names as follows) Leonora Margaret Stephens Tuthill William John Stephens Tuthill Malvinia Stephens Tuthill Christina Stephens Tuthill Alfred Stephens Tuthill It is not until after these children leave home that the name of Tuthill is used in census, instead of Stephens. So, I am asking if anyone recognises this family, or knows of a marriage of a Mary Tuthill to a ( ) Stephens, London, Marylebone, 1810 to 1820 or so. Margaret (from NW England)
