Stephen B. Stephens, sometimes spelled Stevens, depending on the discretion of the census enumerator, was b. in Elbert Co, GA in 1792-d.1869, was md. to #1. Ruth Bragg b. in VA. #2. Sarah Hemphill b. in GA and #3. Mary Ann (Polly) Starrett Bell in Franklin Co., GA in 1841. He showed on the early censuses in Madison Co., GA and 1850 Franklin Co., GA. Parents of Stephen B. were Stephen Stephens b. ca 1754 in SC, (we think) as he was a sworn patriot there and Sarah(Sally) Hodge whom we believe to have come from England to PA>SC>GA. The only child of Stephen B. and Ruth "Ruthie" Bragg was Samuel H. Stephens, b. 1814 in Madison Co., GA and d. in MS after several marriages. There were several issue of Stephen B. and Mary Ann. The only surviving son, William Neal Stephens b. 1847 was my GGrandfather who md. Laura Bowers in 1872 Franklin Co. She was the daughter of Edy Bowers and Jane Glover. William and Laura moved in the 1870's to Bairdstown, GA on the Oglethorpe/Greene Co. line and sometimes showed in one county's census and then the other. They farmed and raised a large family. If anyone is interested in more detail of this family which goes back to Bristol, England, I have much info done by various researchers, though some of it is unsubstantiated. I will be glad to share, in FTM format, with anyone who believes to be connected to this line. Some of the allied surnames are: Haley, Collins, Beale/Bell, Nicholson, Starrett, Cooper, Bowers, Bragg, Hodge, Glover, etc.
Hello, I am responding to this email, as I think a lot of people, confuse my Stephen Stephens, with this Stephen B. Stephens, and now I know for sure, they are not the same person. My Stephen Stephens, as far as we know was born in Jones Co. Ga. in 1773, and was in Jasper Co. Ga., and ended up in Heard Co. Ga., where he died. Hannah Stephens married John Harman (Harmon) in Morgan county Ohio in the early 1820s. In 1880 she listed on the census that both of her parents were born in South Carolina. Does anyone have a line of Stephens who migrate from SC to Ohio around 1800? Her father's name may of have been Joseph, Nathan or Caleb Stephens. thanks, Larry Robbins lrobbins@bak.rr.com
