Carole, Thanks for the info, but I don't think it's the same Henry L. There's nothing in our family records to indicate any Arkansas or Alabama connections. With the exception of that jaunt out to Missouri, everything points to Virginia in general, and Frederick County in particular. Bryan
To Bryan Spellman There was a Henry L. Stephens born around 1830, son of Lemuel Stephens and Mariah Bird, of Clark Co. Arkansas. His brothers were Albert G, b. 1824, Elisha b. 1834, John b. 1841, Miles b. 1848, and two others whose names I cannot locate right now. His uncle was William Stephens of Coffee Co. AL. Could this be the same Henry L? Carole R.
In the 1840 census of Brooke County, VA., later to become West Virginia, are the following Stephens: Amos, Benjamin, William, Joseph. How are they related? Thank You, Kay ksuckow@rmi.net
Hi Bryan, If you can give me some further info on your Henry Stephens, I might be able to dig up some information on him. What was his approximate age of birth? You said that he and his wife returned to WV after being in Missouri between 1850 and 1860. Was he actually in Wood County in the 1860 census? The Stephens issue here is rather confusing, because there appeared to be two or three different regions from which the first Stephens in this area came: Pennsylvania, Virginia, and possibly Maryland. If you tell me a little more, then possibly I can help out some. I, for example, have four straight Thomas Stephens in my line, and it gets very confusing. Hope I can help. Bill, I saw your posting on the Woodall-Stephens connections, and was wondering if you have any info on a Shelley Woodall and Miller Stephens. Most of the info I have is from others researching the same Miller Stephens, he was born in 1810. He married Shelley Woodall and she died during childbirth in 1840, we know this from his second wife's application for pension benefits. It is believed that Miller was born in North Carolina. We do know that he lived there and is where he probably meet his second wife Mary Jane Baker. They moved to Jackson Cty Florida where he lived out his life. One researcher has him as the son of Thomas and Patience (another has her as Petunia) Stephens, born in North Carolina, but she doesn't know where she got this info since it was not the direct line that she was actually researching. Can you give me any info. This is one of those that will drive you crazy trying to find anything to make a connection. I've posted this before, but Becky's quest about Thomas Stephens made me think it may be worthwhile to try again. My brick wall is in the form of my great-grandparents. Henry L. Stephens, according to the records my grandmother compiled, was born in 1824 in Frederick Co., VA. I will note that I have found a few errors in Grandma's records. The 1850 census shows him in Clarke Co., VA and the 1860 census in Wood Co. (W)VA. where he finally settled to raise his family. In between 1850 and 1860 he and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Phelps) moved to western Missouri, then returned to Virginia (now West Virginia). A cousin and I have unconfirmed reports that Henry L's father was William Stephens, one of the descendants of Peter Steffans of Germany via Frederick Co--the progenitor of the family for whom Stephens City VA is named. Can anyone confirm this link or definitively deny it? Bryan D. Spellman mtbearded1@aol.com
Hi, I am looking for any information on Thomas Stephens, born @1767 in Maryland. He was in Wood County, WV by 1810 and died there in 1853. I am unsure of his wife, although it may have been Elizabeth Dawkins. His children were: Thomas born @1800 Barnabus born @1802 Elizabeth born @1804 There may have been other children, but they were not mentioned in his will written in 1850. I have been unable to find his parents, although one researcher feels that he is the "missing" Thomas Stephens born to John and Lucretia (Gaskill) Stephens from New Jersey. This is entirely possible, judging by the birth date, etc. However, in the 1850 census of Wood County, WV, Thomas gives his birthplace as Maryland. Near New Jersey, but....... Does anyone have any information which might help me on this one? I just subscribed a week or so ago, but so far the few posts I have received only mention Stephens from the South. Hi again--any mail you send to STEPHENS-L@ rootsweb.comwill be picked up by anyone who clicks in to the above E mail address, and goes to the Stephens archives, which lists all messages by the month.I chech this avenue on a regular basis to see if anyone answers my inquiries. I only list my personal E mail address as an insurance thing. I usethe STEPHENS-L a great deal,to get broader coverage, and consequently more possible hits. Also use the personaL address just in case I gget lucky, and run across a long lost kissin kuzzin. Yjis actually happened in my wife's side of the family, where two of her 1st cousins that she knew back in the 1930,s surfaced thru thi marvelous but frustrating machine. Bill Stephens
Hi,Becky--thanks so much for your reply to my posting. It is only thru the inter-change of information that we will be able(hopefully) to determine whether family lore passeddown thru several generations can be authenticated. Here is the Woodall stats that I have: Maranda Stephens,b.1836,Upson County---m.Jasper Woodall Feb 28,1856 in Marion County.Ga. He was the son of Clement and Sarah Woodall; children of Jasper and Maranda: Charles, b.1858 Granbury 1859 Mary 1861 Missouri 1865 John R.J 1869 could this be John,jr ? Walter C 1871 Sarah J 1873 Jasper enlisted July 5,1862,Co B,46th Reg, Schley Rifles-the same outfit as Seaborn and Thomas J Stephens I also think I have some connection to the Jones County Stephens: Under abstracts of marriage,Jones County C.H.: Rosannah Stephens m. Edward Meadows 07/14/1819 Allie Stephens m.Rev John Barker 03/19/1820. Both families later movd to Upson County, and some of their children were named after the children of Inman and Susannah Hobbs Stephens.,and vice-versa. Also, a Priscilla Stephens drew land in the 1821 Land Lottery in Jones County, listing some of yhe children as "orphans". Priscilla also drew lans in Upson and Coweta Counties, presumably as a widow I have been trying to get a tie-in between Priscilla,Rosannah,Allie, and Inman Stephens,my thinking being that the latter three may be siblings ,and the children of Priscilla. As I stated before,a Priscilla is listed in the 1850 census,Upson County, in the household of Inman and Susannah, age 75,which would give a dob c1775. Hope this gives you something to go on !! Hi,Harold' I thank you for quick response to my message posting. Will fill you in a little more on what has been handed down to me by my Dad,but first a little background----Seaborn Riley Stephens,a 1st Sgt in the Schley Rifles,Co b,46th Ga Inf. ,died of wounds received at Jonesboro. His brother,Thomas J. was also part of his outfit, but was killed earlier in Miss. The other brothers were John B,Charles Inman,William M. and Wiley Green Stephens. Cassey Ann ,m.Robert L Bridges in 1849,they later moved to Houston County, had 3 children that I know about. Mahala m.John Gassett abt 1856,moved to Taylor County, and had 7 children;Maranda m.Jasper Woodall in 1856,in Marion County,,also had 7 children. Seaborn Riley,m.Mary Ann Bryant in 1856 in Taylor County, later move to Schly County, where my Grandfather was born.He was orphaned at 7 years of age. So mmy Dad had very little family history ton fall back on,and his Mother died when Dad was only 8. What little infformation was imparted to him by hisFather goes likke this, and I'm quoting from a chronicle he wrote back in 1959: " We are descended from William Stephens, the first Gov. of the Colony of Ga.,who settled in in or near what is now Savannah,Ga. William had nine sons, who migrated all over the South.Georgia history tells us that William Stephens was called back to England by King George, who made him a prisoner as he War of the Rev. had started.Alexander Hamilton Stephens,Gov of Ga,Congressman, and Civil War V-P, was my Dad's Uncle ". The foregoing quote from my Dad,s chronicle has not yet been documented by the writer, however I do have several abstracts of willsfrom SavaNNAh,showing that a William Stephens was appointed an executor in several instances, dating around 1769.70 up to about 1774..There was also a mention of "tract of 500 acres, originally granted to William Stephens,Esq on the Vernon River in Christ Church Parish, named Bowlie-------" This info gleaned from the Colonial Loose Wills Collection. As a final note,I do have Inman and Susannah Hobbs Stephens documented inUpson County on the 1830,40,and 1850 census. Both died in Taylor County abt 1854,but I have no infformation as to where buried. Seaborn Riley was named the executor of their will.Unfortunately.I have been unable to find the names of Inman's parents..I keep finding the name of Priscilla Stephens in several land lotteries in the 1820,s,and there is a Priscilla listed in the household of Inman and Susannah,Upson 1850 census, but there the trail hits a wall!! I realize this rambles a bit-I'll lay it to a senior momentAgain, nice hearing from you--it keeps me going ! Bill Stephens
Actually I think an Alien ship passed over and just dropped mine off in Little River Co., Arkansas or so it sure seems . I'm putting together a list of the Stephens in Arkansas that I have come across that are from Georgia . It will take a little time .There are some from Indiana , Tennesse , but mostly they are from Georgia . I get the age of my E.A. Stephens ( supposedly Enoch ) from his marriage license which states he is 21 years <1867/68> of age in August 1888 . To take a different approach to research : (1.) Usually it was relatives that signed as surities on Marriage license or such and in this case a Thomas ADDOCK signed for E.A. Stephens on his marriage license . So maybe I should look for an Addock / Stephens connection ? (2.) There is a John E. Stephens age 47 born GA. fa: GA. mo: GA., on 1880 Little River Co., Ark. census ,that married to a Mary C. ???? .age 35 AR. fa: NC. mo: ??. They have children ; Willie age 11 AR., Ella age 8 AR. , Edward age 5 AR., Gus age 3 and ENOCH age 1 AR. <1878> I have been able to find John E.& Mary Stephens in 1860 Quachita Co., AR. no children listed yet .John E. Stephens is 22 on the 1860 census . This family also appears on the 1900/1910/1920 Little River Co., ARK. census with the exception that evidently John E. has died sometime after 1880 . This Enoch Stephens later married an Electa Sessions. I forgot to mention that I have access to the Confederate soldier listings-if Benjamin enlisted as a Confederate,I will find him. However,Missouri having been a border state,he c/h/b a Union soldier, and I don't have access to this list. Will advise later. Bill Stephens
reference is made toinquiries by Phyllis King,Ainslee Hooper, and Sharolyn McCoy. The given names and dates do not fit with anything that I have uncovered, but that does not mean there isn't a connection somewhere along the line. My Stephens started out in Savannah,Ga.,migrating westward, and all that have on them is primarilly from the West Central and South Central counties in Georgia--Schley,Upson,Crawford,Taylor,Jones and Coweta counties. The earliest confirmed ancestors are Inman and Susannah Hobbs Stephens.Inman, born c.1799 in Ga.,Susannah,b 180l in Wake County NC.They had six sons- all six were Civil War casualties, one of whom was Seaborn Riley Stephens,my G grandfather. Also, they had 3 daughters who married into the Bridges,Gassett, and Woodall families. All nine children were born in the Upson County area. My research has been slow and frustrating due to the casualties. However,I do have some info on the widows of the Stephens' boys,as some of them remarried. The foregoing may be helpful, maybe not.Allso,I bbelieve the Mother of Inman Stephens could be Priscilla,b.abt 1775,but I cannot find a husband for her,nor do I know her maiden name. Please reply to WilliamJ Stephens, E mail:: patabill@nexet.net
Benjamin Stephens b. 1826 MO, wife Rebecca, children Phillip, Robert, Henry, Mary and an unnamed female infant, are living in McDonald Co. MO 1860. Can someone tell me Rebecca's maiden name and whether or not Benjamin Stephens served in the Civil War? Thanks for any help. Sharolyn McCoy
