Hello Bill Looks like a sure way to link the families.....If I interpet the charts correctly, it appears that only 9 male Stephens have been tested so far. Of those, 3 have been linked together. Refering to the 3, 8079,8080,8981, can you give me an example of how the David Stephens ancestor is linked to these three? It would seem to me if #1 Stephens has 5 generations of linage proven and #2 Stephens has 3 generations of linage, and have no common ancestors, then all we know is they have a common ancestor at 6+ generations. Give a little insight on how this DNA testing might provide me with more know ancestors. I'm intersested but not quite sure how it would add to my known ancestors. HI, On the 1900 Woods Co., OK. census is listed an E.A. STEPHENS he gives his birth yr. as 1857 ( as opposed to my E.A. at 1867) born in Illinois , married 1 yr., but no wife or children are listed . He is a boarder in house hold of Henry A. Bower and his occupation is listed as miller. Anyone know this E.A. STEPHENS ? Phyllis
Hi, Can anyone help me with ANY Stephens/Stevens families who were in the Chickasaw Nation IT ( Johnston Co., OK now) , particularly around the Durwood township in mid 1890's that may moved from the Arkansas and upper north Texas area ? Thanks Phyllis
Hi Dave Civil war will have to wait a bit.... Look at http://www.butlercountyohio.org/records/the_archives.htm . The records they have might give some relationships to all the Stephens we have. I'm going over there next Wed and see what I can find. I will pass anything on to you that I find. Burr Stephens
Hi, In trying to trace my Enocgh A. Stephens , I have traced Stephens lines one by one to determine mines origin . I've been working on the line of John STEPHENS 1802 SC and Sarah ELLISON 1822 SC I have them on 1850 Dade Co., GA. census with these children in house hold: Sarah Ann b. 1829 GA. , Parmelia b. 1831 GA. John G. b. 1833 GA. Margaret 5 Aug. 1834 GA. Enoch [twin] b. 1841 GA. Noah [1841] b. 1841 Charity b. 1847 GA. And I understand that Thomas R. Stephens b. 1823 SC married Margaret FOSTER and Matilda b. 1826 married T.D. STEVENS are also the children of John Stephens and Sarah Ellison . ? I have traced some of this family to Pike Co./, Ark. and Wise Co., Tx. Also trying to find out if this is all the children of John & Sarah STEPHENS ? Finding their grandchildren would be a tremendous help . I have not found John & Sarah Stephens in 1860-1870- 1880 census . Thought I may have found him in Alabama . If anyone has anymore infoormation on this family that I can chase , I'd really appreciate any help . Thanks Phyllis plsk3649@swtexas.net
Hi Dave One more time.... I am looking at the land patents for Thomas G. (Gatrell) Stephen(s). They are in Range 11, Twp 13, Section 13,23, and 25. Refering to a Twp/Section map you sent me some time ago, It looks like these co-ordinates are the same as you have on you map. This tells me he was on the same land as you have diagramed. Looking at the references you say are Dick Olds, they are the same in one instance. Does this not help to tie down the relationship? Burr
Hi Again Dave I guess I'll have to drop that line of logic....We probably don't know where Thomas Gatrell Stephen(s) fits in yet. But I'll bet he is a close relative. It's interesting that the Suttons married into the family 2 times. Henrietta Sutton married Richard Stephens 1843 in Wabash Co IN and you now have Hannah Sutton marrying Thomas G Stephens, both Suttons having PA roots. I'll make a trip to Butler Co OH soon and let you know if I find anything new. Burr Stephens ******************************** I just got this direct email asking about Levi. I'm repeating your notes so he(or she) might see your reference to Levi. bass103@juno.com doyou have any Noah Kane Stephens in Fayette co In in 1824 and if so who is his mother.. In reply to Burr Stephens: To bring all of the readers up to date on this discussion - Burr and I are discussing the genealogy of Thomas Stephens who married Rachel Gatrell of Fayette Co., OH I have Ruth Stephens Miller, who lived in Greene Co. OH (abt 1809-1827) then moved to Fayette Co., IN. She had siblings of John (who died intestate in Fayette Co. in 1827), Mary, Margaret, James, William, Samuel, Richard, Benjamin and Thomas. The parent of this brood were Benjamin and Agnes McClelland and Benjamin's father was Richard. One peculiar name in this family is Abednego, which I have only seen in the descendants of this family and that of Benjamin and Rebecca Caldwell. Replies - Thomas G. Stephens is the son of Levi Stephens and Delila Gatrell. I have no idea how Rachel and Delila are related. The surname is variously listed as Stephens, Stephen, Stevens and Stevins. One branch of our Stephens has actually changed their names to Stephen. It is very hard to distinguish individuals since most did not use middle names and the same names were repeated from one generation to the next. Benjamin Stephens and Agnes McClelland's descendants are frequently confused with Benjamin Stephens and Rebecca Caldwell's. The Susanna and Rachel footnotes of Greene County records are in error. Those names came from Dick Olds. I will write you personally on the civil war records offer. Ruth (Stephens) Miller had 3 grandsons (sons of George Miller) who served in the Civil War. Two were killed. I think we might learn a lot from Butler County records. And yes, Midland TX is the home of the Confederate Air Force (now Commemorative Air Force). ----- Original Message ----- From: Burr Stephens To: David G. Notice the "S" is being dropped from Stephens. Butler Co in on the document. Yes I see Benjamin must have been a brother. I was assuming this Richard was the son of Thomas b 1791. Richard was b November 20, 1815 in Butler Co OH. From Dick OLds. He was only 18 when he transfered land in 1833. Perhaps this Richard is the brother of Thomas b 1791. I find BLM GLO record for Richard Stephen of Franklin Co IN recieving land in 1833. I think Thomas G Stephens in Fayette Co IN is the husband of Rachael Gatrell since he carries the middle name of Gatrell. On both Rachael Gatrell and Susanna Stevens you show a footnote of (6). This says Tax list GreenCo Ohio Have you looked at any civil war pension records? There are sometimes a wealth of info there. If you have anyone who is a veteran, give me any details you might have and I will research that part. In the early 1900's, Indiana required a marrige licience application that included the mothers maiden name and the birthplace of the father. Can you name anyone who might fit in that time frame? I got the info for another line from that record. He was getting married for the 3rd time, so I found his fathers birth place for the first time. I think I will visit Butler Co Ohio soon. It's only about 90 miles. A lot less than comming from Midland. Is that the home of the Confederate Air Force? Burr

Hi Dave I'm going to split this up into several messages. If we can agree that Thomas b 1828 is the son of Thomas Stephens b 1791, then the land patent I find in Fayette Co IN Oct 16, 1835 for Thomas Gatrell Stephens might be the father b 1791. Thomas b 1828 would only have been 7 years old. Then the same problem arises. If Thomas b 1791 has a middle name of Gatrell, possibly his mother is a Gatrell, not a McClellan. That ruins your relationship. Have you seen the G initial in any of your research? Thomas G Stephens also had land in Putnam Co IN in 1831. Middle initial only. 3 years old at this time. Looking at Ohio records, I find land being registered in Fayette Co IN at Cincinatti OH. How did they do this? Richard is registering land in Fayette Co IN while living in Franklin Co IN and registering it at Cincinatti OH. Franklin Co IN is just across the state line from Butler Co OHio. Another possibility is that he is marrying a deceased 1st cousin's wife. Mother's, brother's, son's wife. I know that taking your dead brother's wife was common place. My wife suggested that maybe he took his wifes maiden name as his middle name when they were married. Has anyone ever seen that done? Are you reading the Stephens-L messages ok? I'll drop the direct email to you if you are. More to come Burr Stephens
I got this email from one of my lists the yesterday. Aol has a new spam blocking tool where you highlight unwanted mail, then click on a "block" button. it then sends a report to Aol, and blocks any email from that address. Aol has sued several people as well as filed criminal charges. Sound great right??? Apparently, it has it's flaws. People have been blocking mail from the rootsweb discussion lists, instead of unsubscribing when they are no longer interested. Here's the email I received: Several days ago AOL began blocking all emails sent by USGenNet's server. : This means that list subscribers who have AOL addresses can't receive the : list posts. Dave the URL to BLM GLO records is http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/. And Thomas Stephens land grant in Fayettet Co IN in 1820 has his middle initial of "G". I have one relative I identified by the middle initial. Burr Stephens
Hi Dave We have corresponded before about Thomas Stephens. He is my 4th G-Grandfather. Dick Olds did such a good job, I have never bothered to research the Stephens ancestors myself. I know he has doubts about the connection with Benjamin and Agnes McClellan. So I'm sort of 'In Between'. It looks like your evidence is based soley on land sales. Nothing wrong with this. Sometimes the only way in the early 1800's. Here are some of the POSITVIES that I'm picking up: Thomas & Rachael Gattrell lived in Fayette Co IN -- Land Transfer. In 1833 Thomas transfers land to Benjamin in LaFayette Co IN. This might be son to father. In 1833 Richard transferes land to Thomas in LaFayette Co IN. This might be son to father again. If this is Richard b 1815, he is only 18 years old. How did he acquire land at this early age? Question: have you viewed the land grant documents that are online? I don't have the URL, but can find it if you haven't seen them. Dick Olds has documented Thomas' children being born in Butler Co OH. You have Susanna and Rachael both with land survey in Green Co OH in 1824. Green and Butler are only 45 miles apart. Thomas & Rachael's 11 child , Lettie, you have birth, death, death location, burial location. I didn't get these from Dick Olds. Where did you get them? You didn't itemize Thomas & Susanna Stevens children. You have them don't you? I have a picture of Susanna's head stone. It was one of the few still visible in Logan Cemetary when I visited 5 years ago. You know the details of these people better than I do. You can probably think about the details and draw some conclusions that I am still trying to get in my mind. I don't have any more info about the family, but perhaps if we talk about it, I can come to the same conclusion that you have. I would certainly like to resolve this. Have you been to Butler or Green Co and looked at the local books? As you probably know, the local libraries have documents and books that aren't available anywhere else. This is something I might do, if you haven't. I'm only 100 miles from Dayton OH. Let me know about these questions and statements. Where are you Dave? Burr Stephens Anderson IN
I have an Amanda Melvina ORR Stephens, born 17 Feb 1839 in Heard County, Georgia -- died 1906 in Gilmer, Upshur County, TX. Sound familiar?
Hi all, I'm new here. I'm looking for info on Orren (Orrin, Oren, Orin) Stephens. I have no idea when or where he was born, but I'm thinking 1800 or before and probably not GA. He evidently died around 1832. He is listed on the 1820 Pulaski Co., GA census with wife and 3 sons under 10. In 1830, he is on the Houston Co. census with wife, 6 sons and 2 daughters. One son, Jasper B. was born in Houston Co. about 1821. Orren had to have been in GA by 1817 because he had 2 draws in the Land Lottery of 1820. To get two draws, he had to be a resident of the state for at least 3 years. He was a fortunate drawer in the lottery, drawing Land Lot 313, Sect 27, Early Co. although I can find no evidence that he ever lived on the property or even what he did with it. This section of land is located on the present day Seminole/Decatur Co. boundery with Spring Creek running through it. Can anyone help me? Jasper B. needs a mother and grandparents. I've "rescued" an old Autograph Album belonging to Miss Maggie BRAGG of Lilly Chapel, Ohio. The book is dated by Maggie on December 25, 1889 probably a Christmas gift to her. Her handwriting leads me to believe she was probably about 12 years of age at the time. Included in the album is an undated report card for Maggie signed by her teacher W.H. LAIRD which appears to be an elementary school report. Also included in the album is an obit notice for Mary Ann TRACY BRAGG b. 24 April 1837 at London, Ohio; d. 4 October 1912 at Columbus, Ohio. Her parents are listed as John & Margaret TRACY, she was the eldest of 9 children. She married George W. BRAGG 13 Jan 1870 and had three children (two girls and one boy) and 6 grandchildren. Her home was in Delaware, Ohio for many years. There are many autographs in the album including the following family members: 1. J.N. TRACY of Big Plain, Ohio, no relationship identified 2. Alice TRACY of Fayette, Louisiana or Iowa, no relationship identified 3. William THOMAS, March 30, 1890 of Lilly Chapel, Ohio, cousin 4. Bertie BRAGG, July 28, 1892, of Lilly Chapel, Ohio, no relationship identified 5. Mina TRACY of Big Plain, Ohio, no relationship identified 6. W.H. TRACY of Columbus, Ohio, April 20, 1889, no relationship identified 7. Della THOMAS of Galloway, Ohio, August 10, 1892, cousin 8. Rose STEPHENS of Jamestown, Ohio, December 26, 1894, cousin 9. Leah TRACY of Big Plain, Ohio, no relationship identified Other surnames and locations appearing in the book include: STONEFARNER, Linden, Ohio BONE, Stella, Ohio DUVER, London, Ohio BIRT, Columbus, Ohio STRAYER, no location NASH, London, Ohio FRAZUR, Lilly Chapel, Ohio CORDER, no location DUGLAR, no location TRUIT, Lilly Chapel, Ohio KNOTT, no location CLARKE, Lancaster, Ohio I'm hoping to locate someone from Maggie's family so that this wonderful old family heirloom can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
