In regards to the DNA - how does one get involved and what is the cost? William H. Stephens- roots in N.C. and Ga. ----- Original Message ----- From: <STEPHENS-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <STEPHENS-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 01, 2004 2:02 PM Subject: STEPHENS-D Digest V04 #41
Stephens-Stevens and other related cousins, We now have 22 men's DNA marker results from Family Tree DNA results posted at YSEARCH for all to browse. DNA testing is very simple to understand and use the results. If 23 of the 25 markers match with another set of DNA results and the SURNAME is the same, you are closely related to this Stephens-Stevens. Note that we have several complete matches of 23 markers or more of the 25 markers match with other Stephens-Stevens men in our project. And several men have found "unknown" Stephens-Stevens lineage there are related to. Our success rate has been good. And our DNA testing project is open to all Stephens-Stevens men world-wide. Our 22 men have haplogroups I, R1b, E3b and 5 unknown haplogroups in our project. These diverse haplogroups, or ancient paternal genetic types, indicate a very wide geographical spread of the origin of Stephens-Stevens lineages from Paleolithic "Cro-magnon" (I) that entered Europe 12-15,000 years ago to haplogroup R1b from the Levant that brought agriculture to the western European Atlantic Coast, to E3b haplogroups from the mid-east. Our 22 sets of DNA results are posted here at this site for all to browse.... http://www.ysearch.org/ The instructions for comparing our Stephens-Stevens men's DNA results at YSEARCH are found below; and, can be used with any of the 7536 SURNAMES found today this NRY DNA results database. Those 22 Stephens-Stevens men that are participating in our DNA testing program can now upload their direct GED files to YSEARCH records. And, the DNA marker results can now be correlated with GED genealogical lineages posted at YSEARCH to help others researching these same families. Notice 5 GEDS are now posted at our YSEARCH site. I want to encourage all Stephens-Stevens genealogists who are at an impasse in your research to consider DNA testing for one of your Stephens-Stevens men. Many of the Stephens-Stevens lineages were here in the 1640's and pushed west into Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, and Texas before official records were kept so tracking these lineages can be next to impossible. However DNA testing coupled with genealogical records can help with this search and sometimes link you to an ancestor that settled in colonial America, Canada, and/or Australia. If you have questions about our family-oriented, non-profit project, please write. Thanks Bill Bailey, San Antonio, Texas, 78258 Coordinator Stephens-Stevens men's DNA testing project. **************************************************************************** **************************** Logon to this site below (using Stephens record G2ZK3 record as an example) http://www.ysearch.org/ FIND YOUR RECORD ON YSEARCH (1.) Choose the blue button marked "SEARCH BY LAST NAME" at the top of the screen (2.) Enter the word STEPHENS in "Type the last name to search for" box and hit search (3.) On the next page click on the number underlined in blue in the names or variants column (4.) There should be 22 STEPHENS-STEVENS listed on LAST NAME MATCHING STEPHENS-STEVENS page (5.) Look down the USER ID column for the ID record....G2ZK3 (6.) You can click on this ID number and see the markers results and lineage information (7.) Note my name is attached to this record. (Note if a STEPHENS-STEVENS participant does not want to divulge their name and email address; as coordinator I will add my name and email address to their DNA record results and forward all inquiries to the participant so they may answer the inquiry if they wish to). COMPARE YOUR RESULTS ON YSEARCH (1.) Find the Haplogroup R1b which is my ancient genetic type. (2.) Put a check mark in the STEPHENS men in the first COMPARE COLUMN that are R1b.. (3.) Now click on the underlined blue word COMPARE at the top of the compare column (4.) On the next RESEARCH TOOLS research tools page you can edit and move my ID G2ZK3 so it is first in the list on the RESEARCH TOOLS compare box. (5.) Then type on the SHOW GENETIC DISTANCE box. (6.) Note the GENETIC DISTANCE REPORT and the GENETIC DISTANCE numbers in the last column (7.) Any STEPHENS-STEVENS with a genetic distance of 2 or less is very closely related my Stephens. At this time, there are only two other STEPHENS close matches to my family's DNA results. COMPARE BY SEARCH FOR GENETIC MATCHES (1.) Click on the blue button marked "SEARCH FOR GENETIC MATCHES" at the top of the screen (2.) Type the ID G2ZK3 into the ENTER USER ID box and click on Search by haplotypes (3.) Put 25 into the "...tested at least " box. (4.) And 2 into the "maximum genetic distance" box and then click on the Search box (5.) Note all of the men that display a genetic distance of 2 or less are distantly related to you. If you found a Stephens-Stevens here, that would be a very close cousin. (6.) With a R1b haplogroup, there are four 2's in this compare column so I am very closely related to these other SURNAME folks.
Greetings, I have found Joseph, Caleb and Nathan Stephans in the Olive Green township of Morgan county Ohio during the first three decades of the 1800's. Joseph will later move to Van Buren county, Iowa in the 1850's. Do these Stephens ring a bell? Larry
As I mentioned in a recent post to this list, I matched another Stephens male in DNA testing on a 25-marker test. I've now upgraded to the current maximum 37-marker test. He and I are an exact match on these 37 markers. This means that he and I share a common ancestor which is likely only several generations back. Jesse Stephens, my earliest known ancestor, is four generations before me. This other family is from Allen County, KY, and prior to that Virginia. Please see my earlier post for more specifics. Again, I would encourage all Stephens males to have genealogical DNA testing. Not only can it help identify earlier ancestors, it can also help eliminate those families NOT related. Dick Stephens
I am re-posting my data, as it has been quite a while since I have checked on these folks. I am looking for further information on the children and families of David Henry Stephens, b. 1794 Washington Co., TN; d. aft. 1860 in the same. He married Lurana Duncan, 1798 to 1823. The children I know of are Joel Duncan Stephens 1816; he was my great-great-grandfather; who moved to Ashley, Washington Co., IL. John Franklin Stephens 1823; also went with Joel to Washington Co., IL Eliza Roseanna and James R. 1820 There were 2 or three other children that we have not identified yet. If anyone at all can help me, and exchange information, I would be forever grateful. Thanks in advance! Jerry Johnston Scottsdale, AZ

I descend from Jesse Stephens, born about 1818 in Kentucky, who first appears in the late 1830's in Hancock County, KY. I know of several other researchers of this line who also have Jesse as their brick wall. Some believe that Jesse's father may have been Allen Stephens. I now have an exact match with another Stephens male on a 25-marker DNA test. This means that he and I share a common ancestor with a 50% likelihood of that common ancestor being within the last seven generations, I believe. Jesse is four generations before me. I won't post the other testee's name or information here. His line is apparently descended from Thomas Vant Stephens, born about 1732 in Virginia. Thomas Vant Stephens had a son, Thomas Alexander Stephens, who moved to Allen County, KY and thence to Washington Co., Missouri and on to Dent Co., MO. There is a message on the Stephens forum at Ancestry/Rootsweb which discusses this family. Do a search on the Stephens board for Vant and this message of November 28, 2000 will appear. This DNA information obviously doesn't answer the question of Jesse's parentage, but it is a start! Researchers of this line can now narrow the number of Stephens families to check. If anyone has information on Thomas Vant Stephens or his family, such as his father, brothers, sons, etc., please post this information. Somehow and somewhere, Jesse is related to this family. I've now upgraded to a 37-marker DNA test, and it should provide more precise information. I'll post the results when I get them. I would encourage all Stephens males to have genealogy DNA testing. Dick Stephens
Hi Everyone: If anyone on the list has a connection to Caleb Barnes m. Honour Stephens / Stevens, I would be deeply grateful for your help. Caleb, Sr and wife moved to Bedford County, PA c. 1770, where their children were born. Their children, went to Perry County, OH, Allegany County, MD and stayed in Bedford County, PA. I'm looking for some information on John Beaver Stephens, born about 1812 in what is now Wayne County, WV, I believe. He married Bidsey Jackson. Specifically, I've seen information indicating he was the son of James Stephens and Mary (Polly) unknown. I've also seen one source indicate he had a brother Jesse, born about 1817. Does anyone have any information on this possible brother, Jesse, or any other siblings of John Beaver Stephens? Thanks, Dick Stephens
I am seeking information on Garrett Stephens who, according to Census records, was born about 1805 in North Carolina. He is found on the following Census Records: 1850 Benton County, Arkansas with wife, Lucinda Ukn 1860 Benton County, Arkansas with wife, Julia Ann Trammel 1870 Denton County, Texas with wife, Julia 1880 Palo Pinto County, Texas with wife, Julia I have no further record of Garrett, but a Julia Stephens is found back in a cemetery in Washington County, Arkansas, in October 1902. The age is almost correct for her--but ages on the census records were not very reliable. I will be most appreciative if anyone can add anything to the information I already have. I will be happy to share the names of the children to anyone who needs them. Pat
I can't say this is or isn't true, but it's a first for me. I've never heard the Civil War being the reason for any change of spelling on names unless it were families divided due to the conflict. So far my Stephens I have back to 1827 AL. to 1860 Arkansas. Arkansas was with the south but I have traced his children into 1900 Texas and they used both spellings after the CW. From the time my gr-grandfather married in 1888 Ark. The STEPHENS spelling became permanent spelling. His father's 1865 marriage license uses the STEVENS spelling. Phyllis John from Nebraska I have read that after the Civil War, northerners went by "Stevens" and southerners went by "Stephens". My Ohio "Stephens" are all "Stevens" in the later 1800's.
