List... I want to update you on our Stephens, Stevens, Stephenson, Stevenson men's DNA testing project to date. All our men's results are posted at this site:. http://www.ysearch.org/ This project was designed to help amateur genealogists find kin and then validate, verify their paper genealogical lineage research. It is open to all Stephens, Stevens, Stephenson, Stevenson, Stebbins, Steffins, and men with other name variations of these names. Below we have 28 men from our DNA Project. There are divided into 4 genetic groups..Those in haplgroup I (anglosaxon in origin), R1b (western European), E3b (from the mid-east) and the last group from India. Every participant is compared to the first man in each of the groups. Note a genetic distance of 1 on 12 or 2 on 25 or 3 on 37 indicates very close kinship. If you have men in of the four haplogroups below, you may contact these men by logging onto YSEARCH above and then emailing them: at the bottom of their YSEARCH record, or contacting me. About a week ago I sent to the list an initial inquiry re Samuel Stephens, born 1758, wife Mary ____, who apparently died in Ripley County, Indiana, in 1834. Since that time I've made some small progress, and have learned that one of the things I said in my initial message was not true. I had earlier declared that Samuel was born in Carlisle, PA - based on someone else's "reading" of his Revolutionary War Pension declaration. I have since obtained a copy of that pension declaration and while it does confirm that he was born in June 1758, it DOES NOT state that he was born in Carlisle. I think that is "my" Samuel who is listed on the 1783 Westmoreland County (PA) tax list in Franklyn Township (which became part of Fayette County when Fayette County was formed that year). I have also in the meantime learned that Samuel, and family, were in Lincoln County, KY, by 1787 in that part that was spawned off to become Mercer County, and that he was in Christian County, KY, for a couple of years around 1810. I'm now pretty sure that in addition to his daughter, Mary, born 1780 who married Joseph Harbour 11 Feb 1799 in Gerrard Co., KY, that he had a son named John who m. Parthenia Denton 21 Jul 1800 in Gerrard County, and a daughter Sarah/Sally who m. George Dotson 25 Mar 1799 in Mercer County. Is anyone on this list a descendant of John Stephens who died in Fayette County, PA, in the very early 1800s? (His most famous, or best-known, son was Levi). I'm getting very strong vibes that Samuel Stephens (d. 1834) was either a son or a close relative of John Stephens. Notice that Samuel named a son John, and a daughter Sarah (which was John Stephens' wife's name). If Samuel was John's son, then he would have been the youngest of the children, and would, for some reason, not have been named in John's Fayette Co. will. But there are possible explanations for the latter. So does anyone know - other than his not being named in John's will - why it would have been impossible for Samuel to have been a son of John? Or trying another alternative, John Stephens, in his will, named his NEPHEW, Robert Stephens, as his executor. This implies that John's brother (or other nephews and nieces) might have been living in the area. Does anyone know who that brother might have been? And anything about him? Thanks Lou Poole, Richardson, TX

I really can use some help here in sorting out my family---any will greatly appreciate any and all information. Lou, I am far from having my line worked out, but you can see what I have so far at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dgm&id=I6469 I have a little more information that is not posted, but this is the vast majority of it. I know the names of all of Richard's children, but not all of his father's children. I wonder if this is not where your Samuel fits? Dave
Lou, I have a William Denton that married Elizabeth Stephens, 1848 in Huntington Co., IN. She was the daughter of Thomas Stephens and Rachel Gattrell. My Stephens were from the Cumberland/Bedford/Fulton/Franklin Co., PA area, moved to KY near Scott Co., and then to Greene, Butler, Preble, Montgomery Co., OH area and then into Fayette Co., IN. However they are reported to have originated in Wales. Dave
To Lou, I am researching a Stephens family that lived in Fayette Co. IN and one of the descendants lived in Ripley Co., IN. Samuel was a common name in this family. Please contact me so that we can exchange information.
I'm new to the list and fairly new to Stephens research (have only recently decided to tackle the Stephens "stub" on my wife's family tree). I could certainly use any help that someone might have to offer on the following Samuel Stephens. Samuel Stephens filed for a Revolutionary War Pension in Ripley County, Indiana, in 1832. In his pension application he stated he was born in Carlisle, PA in June 1758, and joined the service in Washington Co., PA, 1777-1778. He married his wife, Mary, in Washington Co., PA, 2 Aug 1779. Samuel died ca. 1834 in Ripley County, and his wife, Mary, filed a pension application from Montgomery County, Indiana, in 1838. I think this family was in Lincoln County, KY in the late 1780s, and appears later in Mercer and Garrard County, Ky, records, as these counties were created. I also think I've found the family in Fayette County, Indiana, where Samuel and Mary were listed on a deed record. I know nothing about children of Samuel and Mary, except that a daughter, Mary, supposedly married Joseph Harbour in 1799 in Garrard County, Ky. Mary, the daughter, was - according to family lore - fluent in speaking German, possibly saying something about the ethnic origins of her mother. I'm sure I'll discover further details as I continue to dig, but I certainly would appreciate any "jump-start" help, tips, hints, etc. Lou Poole, Richardson, TX

I have hit my brick wall with my great-grandfather, Henry L. Stephens, born May 12, 1826 in Frederick Co., VA. He died June 16, 1907 in Wood Co., WV, if my grandmother's records are accurate. At one point I found something indicating that Henry was the son of William Stephens, born about 1779 in Frederick Co, himself the son of Henry Stephens, Jr, grandson of the original Peter Stephens (Steffens). I don't have anything confirming this link. Do any of you have information on the children of William Stephens? Bryan D. Here is my Stephens lineage: My mother was Isabel Stephen. She was born in Greene County, Marmaduke, Arkansas. Her Parents were Fred Hill Stephen and Nancy Elizabeth Brewer. Fred came from Stoddard County, Missouri, which is about sixty miles north of Greene county, Arkansas on Crowley's Ridge. Crowley's Ridge runs north to South from about Cape Girardeaux, Missouri to Helena, Arkansas. It is a natural migration route into Northeastern Arkansas. Before 1850, there were swamps on either side of Crowley's Ridge. For some reason, the s was dropped from the Stephens name and Fred began sp elling his name Stephen. The parents of Fred HIll Stephen were William Morris Stephens and Falby Carolyn Mann. William was born in Stoddard County, Missouri. His parents were William Stephens and Mahaly unknown. They are on the 1850 census with their children, and one of those was my Great Great Grandfather Daniel H. Stephens. The 1850 census says that Daniel was born in Missouri in April of 1839, and his wife Mariah Clementine Kinman was born in Indiana. William was born in about 1800, and the census says his birth place was Kentucky. The birth place of Mahaly was Tennessee. The children before Daniel were all born in Tennessee. Circumstantial evidence, and my intuitive feelings associate these people with the Cherokee Trail of Tears that came across Southern Illinois and crossed the Mississippi river at Cape Girardeaux, Missouri. Crowley's Ridge begins there and Stoddard County is the next county down the ridge from Cape Girardeaux, County. It is a well known fact that a number of Cherokee dropped out or escaped when the crossing was made into Missouri and a number of those people ended up in Stoddard County. It is strongly suspected that Mahaly was Cherokee, and William may also have been part or full blooded Cherokee, but he may have also been entirely white. It is also suspected that the wife of Daniel H. Stephens may have also been part or full blooded indian, cherokee or Shawnee. She was from Southern indiana near the site of the passage of the same trail of tears. I can trace these people to this point of Stoddard County in Missouri but I can not trace them any farther. I have found no connection or even any hint of a connection to the Stephens name . It is almost as if they just adpopted the name somewhere. The oral tradition of the indian connection in the family is very strong. But there is no written evidence whatsoever. And of course, there is the light and dark skin throughout the family. My brother looks very much like an indian as do one of the three of his children. James Alfred Stepen, the brother of Fred Hill Stephen ended up in Michigan, and some others ended up in California and Arizona. A number of others stayed in Arkansas and Missouri. The Question is, has anybody heard of any of these people? I have been unable to find any connection whatsoever with any other line of the Stephens. It seems like they just came out of nowhere, and appeared in Stoddard County, MIssouri. But I myself do have an intuitive feeling about where they might have come from, based on reading the information about other Stephens lines, I think South Carolina is the most likely with Virginia being the next most likely. I have been reading quite a lot of messages about the Stephens DNA project. Does anyone know of any connection to the lines associated with this project? Thank you Glenn Payton

Were there any participants from the Richard Stevens/Stephens (1679-1732) line of Stonington, CT? We believe my husband is a descendant through son John, then Joseph, then Josiah/Joseph who ended up in Jackson Co., AL, son Daniel, etc. Thanks, Sandra
My Stephens started off in Lydford, Devon, then to Mary Tavy, Devon, then Arlecdon, Cumbria, then emigrated to Canada, ending up in British Columbia, Canada. Anybody interested? I haven't seen any other Stephens from Canada mentioned. George Stephens
I'm so envious! I'm descended from a William Stephens, living in Louisiana at the beginning of the 1800's. He had a son, John Vachell Stephens, whose only son died as a boy. So there's no way to use the DNA testing to find out where William is connected to other Stephens. But more and more is coming out about these lines all the time, and I have hopes of finding out just where my William came from.
