Searching for the parents or sibblings of one John S. Stephens, b 1806 in Ga.Said to be in Dooly Co.he married Rutha Jane Halliday of same county. the trail goes to Houston, Stewart cos. in Ga. to Dale Co., Ala.Family story is this that two brothers came from England with Oglethorpe to the colony of Ga.Henry went into S. Car. and John was to have stayed in Ga. Have records of Jefferson/ Burke Cos. , Ga. dated 1805 and there are a lot of Stephens there but can't ID them. There are several other known family surnames that can ID there. There is one record in Houston Co., Ga. that a John S. Stephens was a JP. Any Stephens/ Halliday(sp) connections in Ga. and Ala., please contact me. William H. Stephens
Harold, I did a quick check of Barbour Co, AL for you in the census and find one household that had a John Stevens the approx age of your John Martin Stevens. This little boy was 6 years old in the 1860 census, making him born between 1853 and 54. He was the son of David D. and Nancy Stephens. I then looked at the 1880 census for your John Martin Stephens and found him with wife and kids. Close to him was a Phil D Stephens..one or two houses away and then next to that guy was David D. Stevens. The 1860 census shows David D age 46 b in SC with wife Nancy 45 born NC The 1870 census show David and wife both born in NC (page 393 of Louisville, Barbour Co, AL. The 1880 census shows David D born in SC SC SC The 1860 census of David D and Nancy is as follows: Barbour Co, Louisville AL page 54 David D. Stephens 46 SC Nancy 45 NC Nelson 19 SC William 17 SC Franklin 14 NC Robert 12 NC Thomas 12 NC Mary A 9 AL JOHN 6 AL Phillip 4 AL Note...the Phillip is obviously Phil D. age 24 in the same location in 1880, when he was next door to your John and father David D. Also note that while David D. Stephens was shown to be born in SC in 1860 and 1880...the family did indeed come FROM North Carolina before they came to Alabama. In the 1850 census, you're either going to find them in NC or Alabama...a tossup since Thomas and Mary were born on either side of the 1850 census. Here's a bit from a cemetery ..the Methodist Church one in Louisville Nelson K, Stephens, Apr 18, 1841- Nov 28, 1902; Pvt., Co E, 7th Ala Inf. Rgt. and later Sgt, Co H, 39th Ala Inf. Rgt.; s/o David and Nancy Stephens; m. Mary C. Tucker, 1847- 1930; buried Louisville Methodist Church Cemetery, Louisville Best of luck to you in your research, Julie Bissell Tupker
I am at a brick wall with my John S. Stephens, b. 1806 in what is now Dooly Co., Ga. In the book' Early Records of Jeffferson and Burke Cos., Ga.' I see a lot of Stephens and some spelled with a 'v'- also in this book, I see a lot of other family surnames which I can ID, not the Stephens name. Help!! also in Barbour Co., Al., I have John Martin Stephens b. 1853- any info as to subblings or parents. My stephens clan was to have come out of N.C. as did the other surnames in Jefferson/ Burke Cos. info. Harold Stephens
Bill, The 1910 census entry for Ana L. Stephen has to be your Dora Stephens and three daughters and Dora's brother, Joel Chandler, who would have been 17 at the time of the census. I went to the index and looked for any Chandler in 1910 Fulton Co, and Joll R. Chandler appeared in the index as age 17 for the very same census page 43 that Ana L. Stephen (aka Dora) was listed. This is confirmation that my hunch was correct and that the 2nd Ward Atlanta, Fulton Co, GA census entry for Ana L. Stephen is definately your Dora and her daughters. That does not tell us where her step sons, Dorris and Byron were at that time yet though. One step further to finding your census answers on this tough Stephens group. Julie Bissell Tupker
Bill, I just checked some 1880 census info...Dora/Eudora Chandler was the daughter of William J. Chandler and wife, Sarah F. They were 32 and 28 respectively in the 1880 census of Coweta Co, GA...with litte Udora Lee age 4 in their household. This contradicts the info you originally posted that Eudora was born in the 1850s, but agrees pretty closely with the 1900 and 1920 census info. Now...in my last post, I said that the hard to read writing in the 1910 Fulton Co, Atlanta 2nd ward entry for Ana L. Stephen and three little daughters who ages matched up with those of Dora Stephens....the entry also showed a brother, age 17. I had no idea what the writing was for the name for the boy. However, armed with the name of Udora's parents, I looked for them in the 1900 census, where they still were living...and find that they did indeed have more kids and among them...the last was a Joel R. Chandler born in 1892 age 7. That would have made him 17 in the 1910 census!!!! This helps nail down that household indexed as Ana L. Stephen as being that of Dora Stephens, her three daughters and a brother. Now...you still should go look at that census entry for yourself..because sometimes microfilm varies alot...and it might just be that Heritage Quest copied some bad stuff. I got one once that looked like this...bought and paid for...and then complained to the company because I was later told by a family member that they had seen the entry I was looking for and it was very clear. They sent out another film...and gosh darn...it was clear after all. So, maybe someone with an Ancestry membership might have better luck...or you might do well to rent the film from your local LDS and view it for yourself anyway. I would probably try all avenues and for sure look at it myself too. Julie Bissell Tupker
Bill, I ~may~ have found Dora and her daughters in the 1910 census of Fulton Co, 2nd Ward Atlanta GA page 43. However...that is a big ~MAYBE~. This needs someone to look at the census page...hopefully some different microfilm that is in better shape...and see what they see out of it. The index indicates there is a 34 year old white female born in GA on that page by the name of Ana L Stephen. The writing is horribly faded on the copy that Heritage Quest has on line. The ages are readable...and I went through those carefully and found the 34 year old female. It said she was a widow, had been married 10 years and was the mother of three children/three of whom were still living. That much is clear enough not to question and fits perfectly with what we know to be ...that Dora married Jonathan Lafayette Stephens just before 1900 census(10 years) and had three little girls, the smallest a baby when J. L. Stephens died in early 1910. The age of this woman also matches Dora's age in the 1900 census where she was 24. The writing over the area of the names is the worst part...the most faded, so it's very possible that Ana L. was your Dora L. There are three little girls in the household...ages 10, 7(looks like a 7...I ~think~ it is...or else it's a 4 or 5) and 2/12 months, 3/12 months or 5/12 months or 8/12months...I can't distinguish the actual top number for the baby, but it's definately a baby not a year old yet. The baby's name appears to end in an ~ine~...so she could be Pauline. The 2nd child appears to end in a D...and I can possible make out an M and another high letter in the middle...so it could be Mildred....and then there is the first child...for whom I think I can make out an ~ona~...so she could be Nona. There's also a brother listed...age 17....also born in GA....listed as a laborer. He's apparently the breadwinner for the bunch...as Ana L. was not employed. The ages for the little girls looks soooo good...and Ana L...is pretty close to Dora L....when you're trying to read writing that is so very faint. The names of the kids....what I gave you above was my best guess as to what I can see. The two boys...Byron G. and Dorris L. were missing from this household if this is indeed your Dora and her three small daughters. I'd say there's a good chance the boys were out on their own working out somewhere since they would have been 15 and 20 years old and their father having recently died. I have not been able to find them separately though from Dora's household. Since I found Dora and family in Atlanta, Fulton Co in the 1920 census, I'd say there's a good chance this is Dora in 1910 Julie Bissell Tupker
Bill, I decided that your Jonathan Lafayette Stephens was no where to be found in Georgia in 1900...so I expanded my search and darned if I didn't find him on the first try. He was in ALABAMA!!!! 1900 Cleburne Co, Heflen Alabama page 237 Jonathon L. Stephens b Oct 1856 age 44 m 1 time Dora L b March 1876 age 24 m 1 time mother of one/one living Dorris L Dec 1891 8 Biron G April 1895 5 Nona (?...hard to read) L Jan or June 1890 4/12 (note...the age was clearly 4 months...so the birth year should have been 1899, not 1890..a mistake on the census taker's part) Note...you should take a look at this entry for yourself and see if you can make out the name of the last child for sure...and also the occupation for J. L. It was extremely hard to read, but maybe you or someone else can decipher it. I'll look a bit more and see if I can find Dora now in 1910...probably outside of Georgia since I didn't see her in George after several hours of looking. Hope this info gives you a smile. Most libraries with a genealogy section have computers with the Ancestry Plus program online. You can access many states, counties, etc from early censuses through 1930.and search by location and what you believe to be the correct name spelling or you can request the name by soundex to cover all spellings. The latter with last name only plus county or state, if state is all you have to go on, has proven best in my experience and you can select from the list. I use them quite often around this area.(Middle GA) The only cost is for what you print , usually $.15 per sheet. I feel sure that someone in the library can assist you in accessing and explaining the program. Good luck in your search. There is a John L. Stephens listed for Campbell County, Georgia, aged 56, born 1844. Wife: Martha. Has 6 children, one daughter, Dora, aged 19 years. Is this the family? If not, try to provide more information if known. I am seeking some help, hopefully, from the members of this list. I've been looking for my great great grandparents who were married in Rutherford Co, TN in 1829. Joseph D. Stephens b 1812 in TN and Isabella B. Wright b 1814 in VA. They ultimately moved to Jackson, Platte and Buchanan Cos, Missouri. Actually Isabella died in Jasper Co, MO in 1872, but I have found no official record of that death...merely a letter to my great grandfather. Joseph D. died in Platte/Buchanan Co, MO in 1870, but no record there either that has been located. Their son and my great grandfather, John Wesley Stephens, b 1842 in Jackson Co, MO married Margaret Ann James b 1843 in KY, in 1865. They ultimately setted in Wilson Co, KS where Margaret Ann died in 1880 and John Wesley died in 1900. Last summer I did make a trip to TN, but the only thing I found was Joseph and Isabella's marriage bond in a book in the library. I really didn't find anything in the Courthouse, but didn't have any help from the staff there either, so there likely is something there if I had only known how to find it. I would love to learn who their parents were at least and where exactly they were born. Does anyone happen to have these Stephens' in their files or have access to records that might reveal more about Joseph D. Stephens and Isabella B. Wright? I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance. Jan jslopez@cox.net
I'm looking for someone with more information about the Rhodes Stevens family of Providence, Johnston, RI (late 1700s) and later CT and MA. (Worcester,MA is a possible location). Rhodes Stevens was married to an Abigail Kimball. He may have been married to someone else before her, but that is speculation. Known children of Rhodes Stevens: John Stevens (b about 1790 of Johnston, RI and possibly Trumbull Co OH 1820?) Peleg/aka Pelick Stevens (of Kalamazoo, MI) Henry Kimball Stevens (of Kalamazoo, MI, Porter Co, IN, LaSalle Co, IL and Joliet, IL) married Mary Ann Bissell in Kalamazoo in 1834. (she was the sister of my gg grandfather) Lorena Stevens (married at least two times...once to a George Landerking (location unknown) but lived in Michigan...evidently divorced and another time to a Rufus Park at Huron Co, Ohio in 1853). After that, she had several more kids and disappeared. Oren Stevens (of Kalamazoo, MI, Porter Co, IN, Rock Island Co, IL and Joliet, IL William James Monroe Stevens of Rock Island Co, IL and Joliet, IL Nathaniel Stevens of Rock Island Co, IL and Joliet, IL There was one other sister mentioned in an obit for Henry K. Stevens, but she wasn't named. There were other indications that there might be more sibblings for the above Stevens family. A bio for Peleg Stevens gave obviously incorrect information saying that his brother, John, had started the New York Yacht Club, but it was another John Stevens from New Jersey who did that who is totally unrelated. It also said that both his parents died back East, when it is also documented in cemetery records that his mother, Abigail Kimball Stevens is buried in the family plot in MI along with some of Peleg's children who died young. Peleg and Henry appear in early St. Joseph and Kalamazoo Co history as early settlers to the Brady Twp area in 1830. In an early Govt land record, they said they were of Worcester, MA. Peleg's bio also stated that he went back home after first settling in MI and then returned to MI again shortly after. We suspect that was to retrieve his mother, Abigail Kimball Stevens. Somewhere, there is also a Stevens family Bible that had been in the family for about 200 years as of the early 1900s death of Henry Kimball Stevens. It was in the hands of the children of Henry Kimball Stevens after his death according to the obit. Henry and Peleg were both very successful and weathy land brokers/capitalists in their respective towns of Kalamzoo and Joliet. Does this sound familiar to anyone out there? There is at least one other researcher of this family besides myself. We are very interested in finding/seeing the family bible which would answer a lot of our questions for both of us. We'd like to confirm the parentage of Rhodes Stevens, find the marriage info on Rhodes and Abigail, see if the Bible info says who Mary Ann Bissell's parents were, and obtain any info on John Stevens and the ~other~ sister. I'd appreciate any info, no matter how small...or suggestions. Julie Bissell Tupker

She did suggest using soundex to locate all Stephens in the 1900 and 1910 census. That would be the only type of listing.
