    1. Providence Rhode Island Stephens/Stevens
    2. It's been a while since I posted to the list, so I'm going to make another stab at it and see if there is anyone lurking out there who has info on or is researching the Providence, Rhode Island Stevens family. They may have originally been STRIVENS. I am especially interested in finding information on Rhodes Stevens who married Abigail Kimball probably in Providence, RI and who appears there in 1820 census,. In 1800 and 1810 he was in Tolland, Tolland Ct. We believe he was the son of a Henry Stevens/Strives in Providence. There is a birth record there for a John Stevens to Rhodes and Abigail Johnston. (That was probably in error....she was probably Abigail Kimball of Johnston). There are Kimballs very nearby. Rhodes and Abigail had quite a few kids we know of for sure...Henry Kimball Stevens, Orren Stevens, William James Monroe Stevens, John Stevens, Loranna Stevens, Nathaniel Stevens, Peleg/Pelick and probably one or two others. An 1830s land record in Michigan for Henry K. and Peleg said they were from Worsterer, MA. A bio for Peleg said his parents ran an Inn back in MA and both died there, but there is a grave for his mother , Abigail , out in MA with several of Peleg's young children. It also says that his brother John was the man who started the NY Yacht Club, but that was probably speculation on the part of the person who wrote the bio. That John Stevens, New Jersey, was from a known family that does not match up in anyway with this group. According to the obit for Henry K. Stevens in the early 1900s, the family bible which was about 250 years old at that time, was ~in the hands of the children~. Sigh...but so far, we haven't found out WHO really got it. We know that the oldest daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Stevens, was Eliza who married an O (Oliver). S. CHAMBERLAIN. In the early 1900s they moved to Pasadena to be near their son. Since she was the oldest, she may have gotten the Bible. Or, it may have gone to the youngest son, Jerome, in whose home Henry K. Stevens was living at the time of his death. We have some contact with descendants of Lorrana, Orren and Henry K Stevens' , but no one thus far knows much. We'd like to have contact with one of the descendants of any of these Stevens who might have some info on exactly where in MA the family came from or information on the family Bible. The wife of Henry K. Stevens was Mary Ann Bissell (b 1815 PA...raised in OHio). She was the sister of my gg grandfather, Pierce B. Bissell. The Henry K. Stevens family lived in Kalamazoo, Porter Co, Indiana and Joliet, Will Co, Illinois. Orren lived in Kalamazoo, Porter Co, Indiana, Rock Island Co, IL and Joliet. William James Monroe Stevens lived in Rock Island Co and Joliet area. Nathaniel lived in Ohio (daughter married a Phillips there and at least one or two more times in Illinois), Joliet, Rock Island Co and probably Scott Co, Iowa. He was apparently killed by a train in Davenport, Iowa. Lorrena married a Landerking ..lived in Michigan ...and apparently divorced and married a Rufus Parks as his second wife in Huron Co, Ohio. Their kids made their way to the Scott Co, Iowa area and several surrounding counties in Iowa and Ilinois.. Peleg Stevens lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Anyone out there to whom this sounds vaguely familiar? Thanks for reading this...Julie Bissell Tupker

    2. I,too, have been researching for several years to find the burial site of my G-Grandfather: Seaborn Riley Stephens,1st Sgt,Co B,46th Ga. Inf. Schley Co Rifles wounded Sept 1,1864;died of wounds Sept 5,1864 Battle of Jonesboro,Ga. This research was begun by my Dad in 1937,and to date,no further progress has been made. Since Seaborn lived for several days,he might possibly have been in a "field" hospital around Jonesboro. I have checked cemeteries in and around the counties in the vicinity of Jonesboro and Atlanta, that are on line, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.,and thanks! 1. Va, West Va, Maryland Stephens/Stevens
    2. Scott, Brenda
    3. Hello List My Stephens/Stevens family are first traceable to Loudoun County, Va with a John Alexander Stephens born 1811, possibly in Leesburg. He married 1839 and I am not certain if he had a prior marriage as this seems a bit late for a first marriage(?) to Ms. Burgess. Names that are associated to him thru his children are; Lowe, Claggett, Myers, Gregg, Turner, Ryon, Ryan, Bouic, Ford, Hull, Smallwood, to name but a few. I have often wondered if they strayed into Washington, DC, Washington County, Md, Frederick County, Md and Jefferson County, Wva. If you have a Stephens/Stevens connection that you think might fit in, I would like to hear from you. Thanks. Brenda J Scott

    1. Stephens-Stevens SURNAME project at FTDNA - 06/15/2005
    2. Lowe DNA
    3. List.... We have 37 men in our Stephens-Stevens Surname project with 31 DNA test kits returned and several in process. And 30 Stephens-Stevens results posted at YSEARCH from FTDNA. http://www.ysearch.org/lastname_start.asp?uid= We have been able to find DNA matches that are really significant. One in particular are 4 men from the Joshua Stephens family lineage in Johnson County, North Carolina. We also found a match for these 4 men with a Stephens from Scotland; and, located two more Stephens, Stevens men from Texas and Idaho that were not even aware that they belonged to this Stephens lineage from colonial North Carolina. We also matched my wife's Stephens Uncle with another Stephens man in Mississippi. Both of our Stephens go back to a David Stephens born about 1790 in the Carolinas. This is the first new break through in our Stephens genealogical research in 15 years. We have recorded at YSEARCH 4 "ancient lineages" or haplogroups and 5 unknowns: E3b........(2) R1b........(20) I..........(2) I1b........(1) Unknown....(5) It is clear that we have a mixture of ancient haplogroups in our Stephens-Stevens project and that finding kinships thru DNA matching will help document their family history. Our major goals are to find Stephens-Stevens kin, validate and verify genealogical lineages, and to find the European, Asian or African homeland of our participants. Bill Bailey, San Antonio, Texas, 78258 Coordinator Stephens-Stevens men's DNA testing project.

    2. Hi william: Priscilla Stephens was a successful drawer in 1821 land lottery.Listed as orphans were her children: Cassa,Inmon(or Inman),James,John,John,(no initials),William,William B,and Thomas. Priscilla lived in the Household of Inman , in the 1830,1840,& 1850 census in Upson Co., Inman and wife Susannah died abt 1854 in Taylor Co,and I have to assume Priscilla did also,as I can find no further record. Your migration scenario is much like my Dad"s,but have not been able to authenticate, due to the fact that I cannot document a suitable husband for Priscilla. I also cannot locate the grave sites for Inman,Susannah (m.1825,Upson Co,Ga),or Priscilla, dob ca 1775,based on 1850 census. Might we connect? Inman's six sons(Schley Co Rifles& Crawford Co Greys,Jackson Guards) were all Civil War Casualties.. Might we connest? also William J Stephens(Bill) -------------- Forwarded Message: -------------- From: "William Stephens" <whs26@sti.net> To: STEPHENS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [STEPHENS] John S.
