    1. [STEPHENS] Spelling on census records
    2. Phyllis King
    3. Nor forget Stiphens , Stephvens and Stevphens. When I was growing up and had to distinguish the spelling, it was only between STEVENS and STEPHENS, only after getting into genealogy years ago did I realize all the different spellings. Actually I believe the enumerators spelled by the sound of the name. Phonics is not a new thing by no means. My gr-grandfather and siblings, spelled their name Stephens and his children and grandchildren have carried that spelling through, but most of his Aunts and Uncles carried through with the STEVENS spelling after their father's death who has been found to favor both spellings but used STEPHENS spelling the most. Phyllis

    1. Searching for Garrett Stephens b Abt 1805 NC
    2. I am seeking information on Garrett Stephens. I am hoping someone may have him in a collateral line. Census records indicate he was born about 1805 in North Carolina. I have no record of him before 1850 when he is found in the Benton Co. AR. Census with his wife Lucinda who was born in AR. No proof as to whether Lucinda died or they divorced. Two of the boys are with Garrett on the 1860 Census where are the others? There are many discrepancies in the names and ages of the children listed on the Census Records. This is all I have. Thanks for any help that can be given. Pat Census Records for Garrett Stephens 1850 Osage Twp. 1. DNA
    2. Thanks for leading to the DNA site. I found it very interesting. I suspect my great-great grandfather, Garrett Stephens might fit into the R1b group. He was born Abt 1805 in NC. That is all I know and do not have contact with any males from that side of the family. Does anyone find Garrett or Jarrett in their tree? He is found in Benton Co. AR on the 1850 Census with wife, Lucinda and children. By 1860 he is found with wife Julia and some of the same children plus some from his second marriage. They are also found in Denton Co. TX in 1870 and Palo Pinto Co. TX in 1880. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Pat
