I have found no connection with any other Stephens. Does anyone know any of these people? My Third Great Grandfather is William Stephens. The 1850 Stoddard County Missouri census shows his wife's name as Mahaly. The 1860 census shows his wife's name as Sarah, and the same children as in the 1850 census. I do not know if this is the same woman or not. And I do not know their last name/names. Both the 1850 and 1860 census say that William is from Kentucky and Mahaly/Sarah is from Tennessee. My Second Great Grandfather was Daniel H. Stephens, and he married Mariah Clementine Kinman. My Great Grandfather was William Morris Stephens, and he married Falby Caroline Mann. All of these people were in Stoddard County Missouri near the town of Bloomfield. My Grandfather, Fred Hill Stephen, was born in Stoddard County Missouri and he moved into Greene County Arkansas near Marmaduke. He married Nancy Elizabeth Brewer. Note that the s was dropped from Stephens. Everyone in this line from my grandfather on spells it Stephen without the s. It is known that William Morris Stephens, the Grandson of William and Mahaly Stephens, was part Cherokee. One of the major Cherokee Trail of Tears passed through Southeast Missouri. They crossed at Cape Girardeau. My Second Great Grandfather Daniel H. Stephens was born in April of 1839 in Missouri. The word passed down in the family is that William and his family lived as whites. These people may be associated in some way with the trail of tears. A possible idea is that they ran away after crossing the river at Cape Girardeau and settled on Crowley's Ridge, a narrow strip of land anout five to ten miles wide that at that time ran between two swamps. The ridge runs all the way down into Arkansas and comes out at Helena. Stoddard County is about twenty five miles down the ridge.

Judy, Know this probably isn't much help but found this family in 1870 which shows different parents for Angeline and George than what you gave: 1870 Union Township, Benton County, Missouri Post Office Warsaw 71/71 John Stephens, 45, m, w, farmer, 500, 200, b Kentucky Mary, 44, f, w, keeping house, b Missouri Stephen, 10, m, w, at home, b Missouri Angiline, 8, f, w, at home, b Missouri George, 6, m, w, at home, b Missouri This was the only Minerva or Angeline Stephens found in 1870 Missouri Census records who was born in the 1860's in Missouri . Can find no listing for William Stephens, Sarah Stephens or Minerva Stephens (any spelling) in Benton County, nor any other county, that would seem to fit your William and Sarah Minerva. Hi all After being a member of this list for about 5 years - I can finally post my interests correctly. I have been looking for the above person in England all these years and I have just found out hat he was born in Boston USA -( I wasn't even close - lol) Ok - this is what I have Joseph James Stephens b abt 1847 parents names listed on his death certificate were George Nathaniel Stephens and Jane Wragge. I have NEVER been able to find out any details on his parents at all, so fingers crossed this time! Joseph James Stephens arrived in Australia on 4th July 1863 via London on the ship Alexandra which docked in Melbourne - hence where he married a Scottish lass and had 6 children. I hope one of you have his parents in your family tree - if so I would be more than happy to hear from you as he was my gggrandfather. Kindest regards Darlene in Australia
Hi, My great grandmother was Minerva Angelina (Angie) Stephens m. Noah Woods. She was born July 8, around 1862 in Missouri. Her brother George W. Stephens was born around 1868 in Missouri. Their father was William Stephens and mother was Sarah Minerva Shull Doss Stephens (and later Breese/Breece). In the Benton Co., MO Marriages, Book, A, William Stephens married Sarah M. Doss, July 3, 1863. On a 1920 census in Jasper Co MO, George says that his father was born in Arkansas. In a 1900 census for Christian Co., MO, Angie Woods says that her father was born in MO, but everyone in the family even her husband and his family were down as born in MO. Perhaps the census taker was filling in the blanks again. Anyway, I would love it if someone here knew something about this family. A cousin says that George and Angie's mother Minerva was found on the 1880 census in Kansas City, MO with her stepsons William, Sellman, and Jefferson. I still can't make the connection there, but maybe someone here can. In that census, Sarah seems to be the mother of the males and they all say that their father was born in KY. Like I said, I haven't had a chance to talk with my cousin about this recently, but I make no connection. Judy

Oh my word! Thanks to everybody who has responded to the roll call so far, it's really gratifying to see so many of you, and that some of you have already made connections is great to see. Hope it keeps up! Since the rest of you have shared your family information will include mine too. My mother is the daughter of Alberian Barrett Stephens, b 1895 Hancock County, Indiana, d 1949 San Bernardino County, California, m Gladys Abraham 1922 Kalamazoo, Michigan. His father was Samuel Barrett Stephens, b 1864 Hancock County, IN, d 1936 Kalamazoo County, MI, m Rosa Lee Bennett 1888 Hancock County, IN. Sam's father was Washington Columbus Stephens, b 1835 Fayette County, Indiana, d 1901 Greenfield, Hancock County, IN, m 1st Sarah C. Barrett 1862 Hancock County, IN, m 2nd Alice Ellen Chandler 1874 Hancock County, IN. Washington's father was John Stephens, b 1807 PA, d 1856 Hancock County, IN, m Phoebe Manlove 1832 Fayette County, IN. John Stephens has been my brick wall practically since I started my research over 25 years ago. There were many Stephenses in Fayette County in the early 19th century, one a family from North Carolina, descendants of Robert Stephens and Sarah Bean, that as far as I know are not relatives (though of course a person can't rule anything out!) and a Stephens family from Pennsylvania via Ohio that I believe my John Stephens belongs to but have had no luck linking up with. A John Stephens who died 1827 left an estate that was divided among his siblings, including Richard, Samuel, Thomas, Benjamin, James and William Stevens, Mary Stevens, Margaret Morton and Ruth Miller, who was the ancestor of Dave Miller, the previous administrator of this list. She moved to Fayette County with her brother John in the early 1820s from Greene County, Ohio, where their father Benjamin Stephens died about 1821. My John Stephens was quite heavily involved in the buying and selling of the land from the estate and gave his eldest son Lafayette the middle name Abednego, which is found only in this family and in the family of Benjamin Stephens and Rebecca Caldwell, whose family's migrations paralleled and in some instances seem to have become confused with that of the Fayette County clan's ancestor Benjamin Stephens, who married Agnes (Nancy) McClellan. The administrator of the 1827 John Stephens estate, Benjamin Stephens, was supposed to have died in DeKalb County, Illinois in the 1830s. My John Stephens had land dealings with a Samuel Stephens of DeKalb County in 1840, and that Samuel was the son of a Benjamin and Elizabeth Stephens. And beyond that I have not been able to go. If anybody can shed any light on this convoluted situation would be glad to hear from you. There are many who think the Benjamin Stephens in DeKalb County was the son of the aforementioned Benjamin Stephens and Rebecca Caldwell and at this point can't rule anything out absolutely though my John's ties to the other family seem much stronger. Is everybody thoroughly confused now? I know I am! Thanks again, everybody. Len
