    2. D Michael Johnson
    3. Bill Farnsworth, it may be just a coincidence with your William Stephens being in Harper's Ferry, but if not, he may be a descendant of Peter Stephens (1690-1757). The following statement is from the National Historic Parks brochure on Harper's Ferry in the Civil War section: "Harper's Ferry was still a relatively young town, although its origins could be traced to 1733, when a Pennsylvania Dutchman named Peter Stephens settled here and began a ferry boat service. In 1747, Robert Harper, a Philadelphia millwright and the man for whom the town is named, bought out Stephens, improved the ferry operation, and built a gristmill on Virginius Island." When Robert Harper, one such traveler, bought the claim of Peter Stephens in 1747, the settlement consisted of a cabin and ferry operation. While traveling to fulfill that contract, he crossed the Potomac River at a small ferry operation run by Peter Stephens. Recognizing the potential investment value of Stephens' ferry equipment and associated buildings, Harper purchased the property, and later expanded it with parcels bought from the Fairfax family, developing the settlement and ferry service which would eventually be named Harper's Ferry. "Peter Stephens was among the first to settle in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and founded the town of Stephensburg. His son, Peter, penetrated up the same valley to Wythe Co., VA." (1) "Peter Stephens, Sr., (d. 1757) was an Original Land Proprietor and Founder of Stephensburg (Stephens City), VA, also received a land patent, 674 acres, 11/10/1752, Frederick Co., VA" (2) "Peter Stephens, Sr. was born in 1690 or a little earlier (probably in Germany). There is little known about his early history or the exact date he came to America, but since he was so closely identfied with Jost Hite, it is presumed that he may have come to this country with Hite, settling, first, in Rockland county, NY, later coming down through New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the Valley of the Shenandoah, VA with Hite and others in the year 1732. Peter Stephens, Sr. married Maria Christina Rittenhouse of Germantown, PA. There is a tradition in the family that Peter had a previous marriage and that his eldest son, Lewis, was a child of this union. Jost Hite settled in Opequon while Peter traveled a few miles further south and settled on Crooked Run, near which he founded the town of Stephensburg now Stephens City, Frederich County, VA. On Oct. 3, 1734, he received a patent from Jost Hite, 674 acres of land adjoining Hite (the same recorded in Orange Co.) and on Nov. 10, 1752, he secured 572 acres adjoining his own patent. In 1743 the county of Frederick was formed from Orange and from that date we find many deeds from Peter Stephens and his descendants recorded in the Frederick County records. He died in 1757 leaving his large estate to his wife (of whom we have no further record) his four sons and three daughter. (3) 1. 3. Vearl Thank you for looking. I have been to Bath county but have not been very successful. I do have Martha's death certificate. It lists her father as Johnson R. Stephens and her mother as Sarah Roberts Royse Stephens. Martha's marriage certificate lists her father as J R Stephens. But past that I can find no information for her father. Now her mother's family was from Carter county ky. Martha's Mother, Sarah's parents were Sarah Bailey and Hiram Royse from Carter county ky. If you ever run across anything I would be most appreciative if you let me know. Thank you so much for your time. It will not evoke any interest from anyone unless they have decided to read every query (and no one does). PLEASE put some interesting facts in the subject line to entice potential matches to read your post. It is the most important information in your query. 3. My Stephens line is as follows. I am interested in Fielding's parents and whether or not Aditha P. Stephens was related to her husband, James H. Stephens. The 1860 census has Aditha's father, John, as saying he was born in South Caroline.
