    1. STEPHAN from Woellnau, Prussian province of Saxony
    2. Nancy M. Atkinson
    3. Hello everyone, My STEPHAN interests are from the village of Woellnau now located in Sachsen-Anhalt. I would love to hear from anyone with connections to this family or with ancestors from this area. Here is what I know so far: My 4th great-grandmother Joh. Rosina STEPHAN was born 20 October 1787 in Woellnau, Saxony. She was the only daughter of Christian STEPHAN. She had 4 illegitimate children: 1 - Joh. Rosina SCHAU b. 1 Sept 1807 Woellnau (father: Gottlob SCHAU) from Goerschlitz) 2 - Joh. Christiane ALBRECHTIN d. 1875 (father unknown) 3 - Joh. Gottfried ? (father unknown) 4 - Joh. Gottlob ? (father unknown) before marrying Joh. Gottfried FUESSEL. They had only one child together: 5 - Gabriel FUESSEL Joh. Rosina STEPHAN died 21. November 1842, 55 years old in Woellnau. I am unable to find a record of birth for Joh. Gottfried FUESSEL due to the fact that there are missing pages from the Church Register book for the years between 1758 and 1788. However there was a marriage registered (Marriage, Reg. 26/5) 1815 in Leipzig, with publication of marriage banns in Woellnau. My 3rd great-grandmother Joh. Rosina SCHAU (child #1 above) had 4 illegitimate children and never married: 1 - Gottfried Heinrich SCHAU b. 07 January 1832 d. 01 November 1836 2 - Amalie SCHAU b. 17 September 1837 3 - Friedrich Carl SCHAU b. 11 June 1841 d. 15 March 1842 4 - Gottlieb SCHAU b. 28 September 1843 (My 2nd great-grandfather) Joh. Rosina SCHAU died of overexertion (excessive wood gathering) in Woellnau 18 August 1848. Regards, Nancy Atkinson

    1. Re: Eight Generations Joseph Stephan
    2. Floyd B. Mitman, III
    3. Steve, Don't know how firmly you are committed to eight generations, but I have the following run of three Joseph Stephans in data I have gathered: Joseph G. Stephan (unk - unk) m. Mildred Smith (#1) (unk - unk) Joseph F. Stephan (unk - unk) m. Joyce Hovey (unk - unk) Joseph F. Stephan, Jr. (unk - unk) My apologies for the complete lack of dates. The data I have gathered shows that the parents of Joseph G. Stephan were Jacob Stephan (1839 - 1909) and Felicitas Nuwer (unk - 1928). Although I haven't checked this set out in detail, most of my Stephan data comes along the route: Alsace-Lorraine to Buffalo, NY area. In addition, I have several runs of two Joseph Stephans. 3. I'm on this list! Thanks for the message. It's been so long since I heard from anyone I forgot it existed. I'm looking for STEPHAN in Ithaca Tompkins CO. New York, and Kingston/Rondout Ulster County, New York. I am particularly interested in any ancestors of the COLE family from Kingston who may be out there. There is a family tale that says that Sarah HAVER STEPHAN (1825-1905) had a half brother who went to Australia. He made a great deal of money in Ostrich feathers. As he never married, he willed all his money to his half sister Sarah. Apparently the sum totaled 28 million dollars. Sarah never claimed the money because she did not have the money to pay a lawyer to prove her case. It all sounds too far fetched to believe but I intend to go to the library to look up the newspapers just to be sure. Sally COLE (granddaughter of Sarah STEPHAN) had written the story in a letter to my great grandmother Theresa CHARLTON IVERS. In it she said that she had read the newspaper articles and that they used to get letters from people asking for money. Are their any STEPHANS who know of this tale! Cynthia Busch
