Where did this information come from? I've always thought the Steele name was one of those assumed after the MacGregors were decreed to be exterminated and then the Clan name proscribed in 1603. These decrees were both by King James of Scotland (before he became King of England) or his council. I've never found any substantive documentation of the Steele name connection though.
