Steele didn't follow the naming tradition that you discribed. His first son was named William. (Although that could be the name of Ninian 1793's father, I will investigate that.) His second son was named John, Walter's father was named Ninian-so that doesn't follow the naming pattern. The third son was named James, not Elcana- the maternal grandfather. Walter's son named Ninian wasn't until son number 4. He named his fourth son Ninian Lee Steele - listed here as Ninian E. Steel: Ninian E. Steel; b: Dec 27 1858: male white: pts Walter B. Steel & Lauretta Elliot (Caldwell Co., Vital Statistics - Births 1852 - 1910 by Brenda Joyce Jerome) My grandfather Robert was child number 7, the seventh son and seventh child of 13 children.
