I may have some information on John L. and Susannah Steele, I found a John L. and Susannah Steele, in the 1850 census in Cedar Co. Iowa. These two children were living in the home of George and Ann Thorn. John L. was 12 years old and Susannah was 10 years old. Which would put their birth years about 1838 and 1840, John L. Steele entered the Civil War as a Lieutenant, and died at Oak Ridge, Tenn. as a Captain in 1863. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Toronto, Clinton County, Iowa This is what I have proof of, I also know John has present day relatives, so I am assuming he was married, there is a Harriet Steele, b. 1840 d. 1931 buried in Massillon Cemetery, Cedar Co., Iowa which may have been his wife, but am unable to find any marriage information at all. Susannah Steele, I really have no proof on, but My great grandfather William H. Emerson, married a Susan Steele, which I suspect is the same person as she. My g-grandfather William H. Emerson, was b. 1832. I do know that they are buried in Center Cemetery, Cedar County, Iowa . This cemetery has been abandon, and there are no stones in it. If these children were placed in another home, they may be the same Steele's, as the ones that Dorothy Crockett is looking for. The Thorn's came from England, through Canada also. Garla Steines
