William Steele served in the Virginia State Navy from August 20, 1776 until April 26, 178, when he was taken prisoner by Arnold and held on parole until late in 1781. He served as Lieutenant on the "Tempest". In October, 1792, he was living in the Parish of Orange, Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. He died in the winter of 1792-3 in Orangeburgh District, S.C. and was survived by a wife, Rachell. In 1836, William Govin(Govan) Steele and John Andrew Steele, who was born in 1792 or 1793 were the sons and only neirs of the above William Steele and they were residents of Charleston, S.C. In 1835 Robert Steele and Colonel John Steele were living in Woodford County, Kentucky, relation to soldier, William Steele, not stated and there are no data relative to the soldier's parents. The above information is from the National Archives Trust Fund, Wash., DC. I would be interested in hearing from anyone to whom this information sounds familiar. It may be possible that these Steele's may be connected to my paternal Steele line. Thank you for any information/assistance in making the connection. Faye Weber
