I doubt if there is one origin line for the Steels. I have tried to trace back and have found so many variations including the German Stahle and the Baltic Stols as well as the Old English Styles, Stils, LeStel and others. I have some background on my site at http://www.johnsteel.co.uk/genealogy/steel2.html which as can be seen there are some recorded possibilities of Steels back into the 1200's. I guess that is what makes it so interesting, the uncertainty of what you will find next.
