This is probably a long shot, but here goes: In my family we have a Hugh Steel, born somewhere in 1770 (so says his grave in Indiana), but we are having a hard time finding solid information on him before this. He had 9 children, starting in 1797, the year after he married Catharine Dunn in KY in 1796. They were Jane (1797), Joseph (1798), Mary ("Polly") (1800), John (1803), James William (1804--my line), Thomas (1806), Hugh (1809), William Henderson (1814) and Marshall (1816). Unproven stories say both Hugh (#1) and wife, Catharine, were from Ireland~Scotland, but so far have absolutely no proof, except that the names themselves are typical names from those countries.
