The price for the Social Security info is well worth it, if you are having trouble within the first generation or two of tracing a line. I found out my maternal great grandparents names, including my g grandmother's maiden name! It was not what I thought it was. It has completely changed my search pattern. Also, if you contact Pampa, they will tell you how much for a copy of the death certificate. It often has some very helpful info on it, including birthplace, and parents names, including the mother's maiden name. I think the most I have paid anywhere for a death certificate (non-certified) has been 5 dollars. The ones my husband got in Texas were about 2-3 dollars in the Panhandle area.
