John Steele while searching for my family, and I have wondered if he could be my 3rd Great Grandfather's father or some other relation? My 3rd Great Grandfather was John Washington Steele born in 1825/1826 in either Booneville, or Boone Co., Kentucky. John Washington Steele married Mary Ann Foster on 18 Jan 1847 in Jennings Co., Indiana. They lived in Jackson Co., Indiana in the 1850s and 1860s, and in Coles Co., Illinois in the 1870s where he died 24 Jan 1875. In a book titled "The History of Coles County Illinois" (1879) there is reference to a Rev. John Steele. Page 400, "Rev. John Steele was another of the early preachers, and is further alluded to in the history of Hitesville." Page 404, (This appears to be talking about the village of Ashmere) "Hebron Church, of the Old-School Presbyterians, was organized on the 19th June, 1841" . . . "Rev. John Steele was stated supply for the Church from 1844 to 1849, giving it one-half of his time." John Steele was a common enough name that I have no idea whether or not this Rev. John Steele is related to my family, or if he is the Rev John Dawson Steele you are seeking. But it's another avenue worth investigating. jim
