My brick wall is James A. Steele, born somewhere in MO on 2 Feb 1818, died somewhere in IL in 1887. His first wife, Rebecca Jane Harrington, was born 22 Mar 1820 place unknown, & died 1 Oct 1849 presumably in IL. They were married 16 Apr. 1840 in Madison, IL per IGI. Their children: 1. Thomas Steele born 26 Sep 1842 in IL, died 1871. 2. Sarah "Carrie" Steele born 12 Dec. 1843/1844 in IL, died 20 Feb 1935 in Guthrie, Logan Co., OK, married Dr. Thomas Wilkins. 3. James Monroe Steele born 19 May 1847 in IL, died 1918 in KS, buried Oxford, Sumner Co., KS James next married Laura Jane Hall, born c. 1820, place unknown. Their children were: 1. Laura Loretta Steele born 5 Oct 1857 in IL, died 29 Jan 1940 in Guthrie, Logan Co., OK. She married John Curtis Stratton on 23 Aug. 1877 in Decatur, Macon Co., IL. 2. Abraham Lincoln Steele born 22 Mar 1860, married Augusta Kreker. 3. Richard Yates Steele born 20 Feb 1862, died 1940. Married Cora Alberta Walker. 4. Mary Elizabeth Mollie Steele born 27 Aug 1863, died 27 Feb 1937. Married William Alfred Shaddock. 5. Ester Steele born 25 Jul 1865, died 20 Dec 1871. 6. Almerta Jane Steele born 20 Apr 1868, married 1) ? Avery, 2) ? Thompson, 3) ? Mitchell 7. Emma Steele born 3 Jul 1871, died 1939, buried in Macon Co., IL. Never married - kept house for Linc & raised his son Arthur. Also listed on tombstones, there are Cora Steele 1855-1870 & Grace Steele 1855 - 1874. Just a point of interest; I too have a James Monroe Steele. Mine was born in 1838, VT, went to Iowa as a young man, served in the civil war for Iowa and died in Mich. in 1917. Leslie, I don't know if this will be of any help to you or not, but while looking for my Silas Wesley Steele, who married Susan Jeanette Edwards of Farmer City, DeWitt County, Illinois I found a James Steele listed with the United Methodist Church in Farmer City. I probably have some record of my findings somewhere in my piles of paper, but can't seem to lay my hand on it for the moment. But am sure that a letter to the United Methodist Church, Farmer City, IL should be able to help you locate this man. Hope this will be of some assistance to you.
