Sue, An Andrew Steele is referred to on page 158 of Ruby Addison Henry's Book "The First West" which is a very accurate account of the development of the land area known as Kentucky, and the areas efforts toward gaining statehood. After a serious massacre called the defeat at Blue Licks, Andrew Steele wrote to about the preservation of the area. Also in Henry Steele Commanger's Book the "Spirit of 'Seventy-Six", vol. l, (page 1060) the same letter is referred to as Andrew Steele to Benjamin Harrison, Governor of Virginia... dated August 26, 1782. Page Smith's Book "a New AGe Now Bgins, Vol. 2, (page 1230 and 1231 again refers to Andrew Steele as being in one the relief parties coming to the aid of the Kentuckians at Blue Licks Battle and writing to Gov. Harrison about it. Also, research recently acquired from Bourbon Co. Kentucky indicated that by Court Order, issued in Oct. of 1783, Fayette County, ordered Daniel Boone and others including an Andrew Steele to view and mark out the most convenient way from Lexington by the lower Blue Licks Station to the mouth of Limestone(now Marysville) or the most convenient place for a landing on the Ohio River between the mouth of Lawrence Creek and Salt Lick and make a report to the next court, etc. Another reference from the same material refers to a William Steele who came to Kentucky prior to the year 1780, and commanded a company of Rangers in the Indian Warefare and was stationed at the blockhouse where Frankfort stands today. In 1873, he build his home near Lock 5 on the Kentucky river which became know as Steele's Landing. The item continues and refers to William as Captain Steele, who became a member of the first an second Constitutional Coventions, and represented Woodford Co. in the legislature. He was married in Virginia to Sarah Bullock and died in Kentucy in Nov. of 1826, at age 70. One of his children, daughter Jane married Samuel Wilson, and inherited the family home at Steele's Landing. I was trying to verify this by history books, which resulted in acquiring the first two or three Book references to Andrew. As to Thomas Steele...a Thomas Steele born in 1806 in Bourbon Co. Kentucky to Hugh and Catharine Steele is one of my ancestors; Hugh and most of his family then moved to Jefferson Co., Indiana. However, in my research, I came across a record of Pennsylvania Mariages Prior to 1790 which lists the marriage of Thomas Steele and Mary Bathurst on April 26, 1770. Hope this helps you. Jeanne V.
