    3. Maybe I am only adding to the confusion, since I don't even know my John Steele's (bef.1760-1823) ancestry or origins, much less anybody else's. But here is some of the info I've received on Ninian[s]. I kind of watch the name since it shows up close to where my other known folks were in PA & NC, and where they, and my John, ended up in KY. Since I've never seen the sources, I cannot speak to the authenticity, and since I'm new to the list I don't know if this has been discussed before. I hope something helps someone. As I said, it helps me to be able to eliminate "possibles" for my John Steele. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: Kathryn Weiss <buckeye@thegrid.net> To: PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com <PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 12:32 PM Subject: Re: New to list >Hi, folks, >I've been "here" for a couple of weeks. He died in 1745, leaving several children, but none that I can find named John. I did find an "unattatched" John in another Steele family, the son of Gen. James Steele. The Gen's. son, James, was a member of the legislature, and resident of Fallowfield, and served in the War of 1812..... a son John is also mentioned, but nothing more than a name. From: Kathryn Weiss <buckeye@thegrid.net> To: Sandra Ferguson PA-Old-Chester-L Interesting. There is a Ninian Steele and a Robert Steele (and Luke Hamilton), on the Rowan County Tax List, now Iredell Co. area, taxables in the Fort Dobbs NC area for the year 1772, on the same tax list as the Carrickfergus Dobbins who were in Lancaster & Chester by 1740, and Rowan co by 1750. Are Ninian & Robert the same families? There may be other Chester names on this tax list - I don't know the Chester names well. But, I've been keeping an eye out for info on this Robert Steele. I'll see if I can find anything about Gen. James' son John - he may be the John Steele who ended up high in govt service, Mississippi, I think, childless. From: "Sandra Ferguson" -PA-Old-Chester-L To: "Kathryn Weiss" <buckeye@thegrid.net> Ninian had 4 sons - Robert, Samuel, Ninian and William. Samuel died in 1760, leaving 11 children, the sons - Robert, Samuel, Francis, Joseph, James, William and Ninian. the descendants of James moved to Western VA. Wm. son of Samuel had 1 son, John but he lived in Chester. "A branch of Ninian Steels, about the period of the Revolution, went to North Carolina,, and settled in the neighborhood of Charlotte "...this , from the History Of Chester Co. ============================================
