One problem on relying on wills for complete lists of children are people have problems within the family and are disinherited or completely written off and never mentioned again. Do you have another type of documentation supporting that William was not one of Samuel's children? Or does someone else have other documentation supporting that he is Samuel's child? That one falls in a grey area Michela Steele --
Hi again, I believe the "fact" that William is listed as Samuel child is because in 1880 (120 years after the death of Samuel and 63 years after the death of William), John Kimble Steele, the Great Grandson of William b.1731 & Elizabeth Magee Steele) writes a letter to Gilbert Cope (who with J. Smith Futhey was writing the history of Chester Co., PA, by the way, generally a wonderful book!). In this letter, (it is at the Chester Co., PA Historical Society in West Chester, PA.), in part: "Friend Gilbert Cope. Your letter of inquiry in regard to Steele family that settled in New London and when and where they came from. I have been trying for years to trace the family back to its first coming to America. The Steeles, came from Ireland and were the so called Scotch Irish there no doubt..." He goes on the say that Wm was a son of Samuel, whose daughter Ruth married Robert Futhey (this is the Samuel in question). Then, "...Samuel Steele had some 7 or 8 children. His son James settled about Andrews Bridge & was a General.." This is incorrect even in Futhey Cope. This James is the son of a William who settled nearby in Lancaster, PA and married Rachel Kerr (Neubacher in his book says that Biographical Annals of Lancaster Co., says this William Steele was probably the youngest son of Ninian Steele (d. 1745)). Back to John Kimble Steele letter, he also says Steelville is named after our William, it is not, it is after this Lancaster family. Then he goes on to say that he got his info from his "Aunt Susanna" - she is in 1880 age 92, I believe she may be entitled to a little confusion. But then he says that: "...my venerable Aunt told me that two of her Grandfathers Brothers came to her Fathers and spent a week, they were Lawyers and were settled at Carlisle, PA. Another went to North Carolina." I only last week put together the fact that a family supposedly went to Cumberland Co., PA, a mother and six sons John, Thomas, William, Joseph, Samuel and Ephraim. They were from Ireland and their father, Samuel Steele (mother was Mary Stevenson Steele) had died. Two sons stayed in Ireland, Ninian a preacher, and James, a farmer with their sister Jinny. Now don't you think there is a high probability that this may be the correct Samuel? But how did our Wm end up in Chester Co.? And what of the other brothers (Ephraim is also easily found in Carlise)? Also I suspect the two Samuels were cousins Samuel from Ireland, perhaps their fathers (Ninian and Samuel??) were brothers. Rev John Steele of Carlisle PA had a son John Jr who was a lawyer. If anyone can shed any more light on this, I for one, would be extremely grateful. Oh John Kimble Steele concludes by saying "I want all the information I can get of that family and its descendents if I start my family tree with Samuel Steele." It looks to me like Futhey & Cope ran with the info from John Kimble Steele, altho they may well have had other sources, but I have found none and they don't state any and after all they were asking John Kimble Steele for an input. I hope I have not just confused everyone! Thanks for responding. I agree while WILL help they are not proof that a person was never a member of the family. Perhaps William died before the person making the WILL. In the case of death the child is not mention, but sometimes there children are but then not always. If the residency of a child is unknown then again the child could be left out of the will. It is very expensive to locate a person to receive the gift, when it is not known if they are dead or alive. I agree try to find another source to prove or disprove the relationship.
