My family is from Scotland (primarily from Glasgow area) and emigrated to Maine in the 1840s. Many Steel(e)s in the US came from Northern Ireland (especially any in Appalachia), which in turn originated in Scotland and went to Ireland as part of the plantations there. There are also many English Steeles. The German variety is an American anglicization of Stahl or the like. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Elmes and Ann, were my great-greatgrandparents. My mother had a treasure trove of personal diaries, sketches, etc. of Sam Steele. Sam's wife started a school up when they were living in the prairies. Many of Sam's historical accounts are housed in the Edmonton Museum Archives. My mother decided to donate these records to the museum, after my grandmother passed away. I have retained some personal letters that members of the Steele family had written. Some are written by Harwood Steele ( Sam's son ) as well as other letters from various relatives.
