I have several William Steeles, What is your question.
Sandy I have been researching for more than 30 years.? Andrew Steele's parents are unknown.? Many have been assigned to him, but none of them prove out.? I have come to the conclusion that he?could have been an immigrant.? If that were so then it would account for why he doesn't seem to fit anywhere.? Don't limit your search to VA.? That place of nativity could be wrong.? It was originally believed by some of Andrew's descendant's that he was from Montgomery Co. VA, based on a deed found in Davidson Co., TN in the 1790's to an "Andrew Steele of Montgomery Co., VA."? Later research proved that the Andrew Steele in the deed was a different Andrew than the one who married Martha Buchanan.? When this land was sold it was in the newly created county of Williamson, TN, formed from Davidson.? The Andrew Steele who sold it was by then a resident of Kentucky and lived out his life there.? I don't have any of the details, they are stored away and I am writing from memory.? Our Andrew Steele received a preemptor's grant, along with his father in law Archibald Buchanan, in Davidson Co.? I don't?know if?they were the original grantee's as they may not have arrived?in the area?early enough to directly recieve a grant.? It is likely they purchased the preemptor's rights from others.? Even so they would have arrived in Davidson Co. by the early 1780's, perhaps journeying with William Bowen, brother of Agnes Bowen Buchanan.? Andrew never filed a deed for his grant which inidcates that he transfered his title to the land to someone before filing. He purchased land in Sumner Co., in the part that later became Wilson Co., and of course he later moved to White Co., TN.? Email me off-list and we can discuss this further. Hey there Cuz! Speaking of Andrew Steele, I seem to have run across a descendant of Nathaniel G. Steele and Elizabeth Bozarth, through their son, Levi Bozarth Steele who married Susan R. Strong in DeKalb County about 1855. Now, I found (I think) Nathaniel in Sumner County in 1850, and the Administrator's Settlement records do seem to support Nathaniel's moving there, and in 1860, I THINK I found Levi and Susan either in Nelson or Christian Counties, Kentucky but not sure. A family by the last name of "White" was in the household. I'm very curious as to to other descendants of Nathaniel. I suspect that perhaps Andrew Steele's possible (?) second wife, and is is mere speculation on my part, may have been the Dorcas Steele found in DeKalb County records living near William Steele and John Steele. She may possibly be the mother of Nathaniel G. Steele, and possibly also Alexander Steele who married Lucy Compton in 1807 Wilson County. I've also found a reference in Wilson County about 1810 regarding Andrew Steele having been a legatee to the estate of Vincent Compton. I have very little info on the Comptons apart from Lucy and Jane having married two of Andrew's sons. Hope you may be able to shed some light on this. Keep in touch, Will Smith Manchester, TN [email protected] wrote: Sandy I have been researching for more than 30 years.? Andrew Steele's parents are unknown.? My first Steele's settled in Charles County, MD, migrated to Southwest VA and then to KY. David Steele, b,1803 in Tazewell County, VA married Matilda Claypool and they lived, for a time, in Malone, Morgan County, KY. However, they both died in VA. Their son, Jeremiah, married Martha Lockhart and they moved to Morgan County, KY. They had 9 children together, one of whom was my great grandfather. George Washington Steele. My grandfather, Stanley Steele, went to Bell County, TX where he met and married my grandmother, Ollie Canada. After a few years, they moved back to Morgan County, KY and about 20 years later, they moved to Ohio, near Cincinnati. I have considerable history on these Steele's. Are they a part of your family? Looking forward to hearing from you. [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are a lot of Harley Steeles list on the Social Security Death Index records. There were a lot of Steels in Alabama and Mississippi in the 1800's but I don't have links to all of them. I descend from a Richard Steele born abt 1800 in North Carolina and I found in North East Georgia abt 1830 for the first time. My ancestor Andrew Steele had a son, Archibald Buchanan Steele, who settled in Amite County, Mississippi probably by 1800 or 1810, from Davidson/Sumner County Tennessee area.
