Has anyone ever discovered the lineage of Samuel Steele, the husband of Margaret Fulton, of Augusta County, Virginia? This fellow was living awfully close to my Buchanans in the Beverly Patent back in the 1740's, and I'm speculating that his son Andrew Steele is the same Andrew Steele who married Martha Buchanan, daughter of Archibald Buchanan and Agnes Bowen McFerrin-Buchanan. The name "Alexander" keeps popping up, and could either be from the Steele or Buchanan side. Archibald's grandfather or great grandfather was an Alexander Buchanan from Chester County, Pennsylvania, if I recall correctly. Seems this fellow was also the ancestor of President James Buchanan. Thanks Will

You have a Mary Ann Combs Steele; I have a Mary Ann Steele Combs. My Mary Ann was born in 1832, in Bourbon Co., KY d/o James William Steele and Jane Campbell Wilson. She married Francis C. Combs, December 23, 1852 in Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa. Mary Ann and Francis Combs had four daughters: Sarah F Combs, Alice J Combs, Julia Minnie Combs and Amanda B. Combs. Their dates of birth range from 1853 to 1858. Anything other than coincidence? Bev

Good day all, I'm seeking info on the family & ancestry of John STEEL and his wife Lydia (UNK) who were living in the Blenheim Twp, Oxford County, Ontario about 1810 - 1815. They raised at least 5 children (named in John's will of 1855), one of which was Mary Catherine "Polly" STEEL. Mary was born in Blenheim Twp about 1813, and married Andrew Emanuel HOOVER about 1833, probably in Welland County where their 3 children were born. Andrew died in 1849, and Mary then in later life married Jacob BEARSS. I know very little else about John STEEL and Lydia, except: 1) Lydia was alive when John's will was written, 2) other children included Jane, Sarah, Jonathan, and David, 3) John may have been in upstate New York about the time of his death. I'm hoping to hear from some of you, and I wish everybody on this list a GREAT NEW YEAR, filled with ancestral discoveries! Thanks for reading this. Best regards, Jackie (in Virginia)

> Records show the name being spelled- 1, STIELL 2, STEILL 3, STEEL, only > knowledge of the name being spelled with an E at the end is of one member > who emigrated 1856 to America and arrived with an 'E' tagged on My line of STEEL, 16C to 19C in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, didn't have a final E until an Elmes Yelverton STEEL, upon receiving his commission in the Royal Navy, discovered that an E had been added and he never bothered to change it. He later migrated to Canada and there are descendants of his all over the North American continent. Other members of his family, apart from his direct descendants, managed to do without the E. The origin of the name is clouded by the mists of time. It is found in quite a number of languages, e.g. OldEnglish, Saxon, German, French, Dutch, etc, so descent from one common ancestor is unlikely. It may well be a "personal characteristic" surname meaning reliable and trustworthy, but I think I will have more luck trying to find out the origin of a given name, Elmes, that was so strong in my line without interruption from the 17th to the 20th centuries. =============================== David Steel <dsteel@tpg.com.au> Adelaide, South Australia 17,000 entries and 100 visits a day - the GLS Surnames List at <http://www2.tpg.com.au/users/dsteel/glsnames.htm> ==================================================

Yes, Bob (samstee@tds.net) - my husband is a descendant of Robert Steele of Wythe County VA through his son Edmond (Wythe and Grayson Counties VA and Whitley County KY) and his daughter Elizabeth Steele, who married Michael Prewitt 1826 in Whitley County KY. Both died in Parke County IN, she in 1858 and he in 1882. Would delight in talking to you more about "our" relationship and most happy to share what I might have that would be of interest to you. What is a Roll Call ? Well, when roll call is called the subscribers send in the lines they are researching. You may be as detailed or as limited as you desire. List file limit is 20K. You will need to keep your mailboxes emptied so as not to bounce off the list due to a full mailbox. We have about 350 members so I am going to call Roll Call by region Starting on FRIDAY.
