    1. [STEELE-L] Steele's of Augusta Co. VA - Roll Call
    2. ernest B Thompson
    3. I am a direct lineal descendent of Samuel Steele of Augusta Co. VA. He was born in 1709. He married a Martha (or Margaret) Fulton who is rumored to be the Aunt of "Steamboat". These are the "Steeles of Steele's Tavern". For many years I have been trying to establish his pedigree. . There is information around that he was the son of the famous Irish author Sir Richard Steele. However, I and others had found conclusive evidence that this is not true. 1. [Steele-L] Salina Steele
    2. Pamela Troxell
    3. Talk about an elusive Steele! I have only been able to find a little about my husband's great grandmother Salina Steele Troxel (Troxell). I know that she was born in 1851, was married to Jacob Troxel, Jr. on 1 January 1866 in Scott Co., TN., and that they had at least 7 children (Jasper, Savannah, Goldman, Peter, Annie, Billy, and another daughter). Goldman was my husbands grandfather.I also know that she died in 1928 in McCreary county, KY. Is there anyone out there who has any more info on this lady? Thank You in advance Pamela Troxell journey7@nctc.com

Thomas left no will and the Petition for Letters Testamentary only mentions his widow, Jane, and children: John M, David E., J. Almond, Samuel B., James F., Jonathan, and Sophie's heirs. Thomas and Jane had nine children (Note: the GedCom lists fifteen children for Thomas and Jane, however based on the Estate documents (Petition) this does not appear likely.). Their children were: 1. 2. I have a M.E. Steele born in South Carolina who married Josiah P. Alexander from either North or South Carolina. At some point they moved to Tennessee and had a daughter Mary Adeline born December 1843 in Pulaski TN and died November 10, 1910 in Birmingham Alabama. Mary Adeline married Zachriah Taylor Partin and they had, among other children, my grandfather Steele Hightower Partin. I know nothing more about M.E. Steele. I subscribed to this list several years ago in hopes of tracing my Steele connection. Pete Partin

    1. [STEELE-L] THOMAS STEELE
    2. Does anyone have any information on Thomas Steele who was born about 1818, possibly in Virginia? He and his wife Nancy (Massey?) were in the 20 year old age bracket in the 1840 Monroe County, (W)VA, census. They were also there in the 1850 census and had 5 children. They were listed as: Thomas 32; Nancy 30; Mary M. 9; Nancy J. 7; Elizabeth A. 5; Thomas C. 2; and John L. 1 month. I can find the family no place at all in the 1860 census records. In the 1870 census, Nancy and the children are in Mason County, WV, along with 2 additional children, who are James G. who was born in 1854 and Jeffrey A. who was born in 1858. Thomas was not listed with the family in this census. I have a copy of an old family note that says Thomas left the family and went west to Missouri. I have no names for Thomas' parents or siblings. (Mary M. Steele married Thomas Barnett in Mason County, WV, on 19 March 1870; Thomas C. Steele married Melissa Ann Withers in Gallia County, OH, on 11 March 1870, he married second, Elizabeth Rhodes in Gallia County, OH, on 31 Aug 1881; John L. Steele married Josephine E. Young in Putnam County, WV, on 24 Dec 1871, he married second, Elouisa Carpenter Miller on 25 Mar 1885; James G. Steele married Malinda Teays Goodall in Gallia County, OH, on 25 Sept 1879; Jeffrey A. Steele married Anna A. Smith in Wood County, WV, on 14 Dec 1884.) Thanks for any help anyone can possibly pass my way, Judy

    1. [STEELE-L] Wm not son of Samuel(??) Chester Co., PA
    2. Shirley Steele
    3. Hi, I don't believe that William b.1731 is the son of Samuel Steele. Several sources say he was Samuel son (like Gilbert Cope and J.S. Futhey), but I don't believe it is correct. Samuel lists all the others as his children in his will, but no William. The most likely father to William is John who dies 1747, and John's Dad is likely the Andrew who dies 1734 (Andrew lists Peter Highet and James Donnel as "sons" and John lists them as "brothers", most likely sons and brothers in law). A book by Neubacher also questions that Samuel is not the father of William. If interested in more discussion please e-mail me at eleets@pacbell.net. Good luck Shirley

    1. [STEELE-L] "Steele name origins"
    2. John Steele
    3. Have only just caught up with recent lines. My ancestors were Presbyterians from Raphoe in Ulster. Family tradition is that the Steeles were originally from the Scottish sept of MacGregor. Indeed my Gr Gr Grandmother, who died aged 96 some thirty years ago, always told me I was descended from Rob Roy!! But I have no proof, only repeated assertion. A note prepared by one of the family in the early 1920s repeats the same theme but says that the MacGregors were of Celtic descent, having originated in Ireland and moved to Scotland in 6th century. Does anyone know if this is true? As for how the name Steele originated, the same note says that some retained the adopted names they had been forced to take in Scotland during he troubles, others had adopted "through sullen pride". Steele - as in cold steel weapons of war - is supposed to be one of these. Plausible but not dreadfully convincing! If anyone has connections with Steeles in the Raphoe area of Ulster around beginning of 18th century I should be glad to hear from you. John Steele Horsham England

Hello, I'm seeking information on Ninian and/or either of two Samuel Steel(e)s as follows: NINIAN Steel(e), died 1745, possibly from Northern Ireland, married to Mary, and they lived in New London Township, Chester Co., PA. Their children were Robert, Martha, SAMUEL, Susannah, Ninian, and William. SAMUEL died 1760 and lived in the Thunder Hill area of New London Township, Chester Co., PA. His children included: Robert, Ruth (b. 1719, marrried Samuel Futhey), Jane (married George Campbell), SAMUEL, Francis, Joseph, James (married Isabella Read), William (b. 1731; married Elizabeth Magee in 1750), Ninian, Ann, and Elizabeth. A Samuel Steel(e), possibly the first listed above, lived in Lancaster Co., PA in the 1750s. A second Samuel Steel(e), possibly the second listed above, also lived in Lancaster Co., PA for a time. He was born c. 1767 in PA, married Nancy, who was born c. 1765 in PA. They moved to Malaga Township, Monroe Co. OH where he is likely buried. All the best in your research! 1. [STEELE-L] mid 1800's STEEL(E) family bible w/ photos for sale
    2. Good day to all, Little over a year ago there was a STEELE(E) family bible for auction on ebay - I contacted the seller and asked for specific names I was seeking. He would not tell me any names, but the region and dates were right so I bid with a lot of hope . . . and eventually I won it. Well, it is not my lineage, and I've spent a lot of time trying to find a possible living ancestor that might be interested in the bible. At this point, I am going to offer it back up for sale, for only what I paid plus shipping. BUT, I will list the names in the hopes it will find a good home. DESCRIPTION: Deeply embossed leather cover, 10 inches by 13 inches by 4 inches thick, weighs over 11 pounds, over 1300 pages including pages for family records and photographs. Titled: Improved Domestic Bible, published in London & Ontario. The only published date I found was 1873. Has numerous engravings and rich color plates. Overall the bible is intact, with all pages present, but the edges of the cover show moderate to heavy wear. THE FAMILIES: This was the family bible of Charles STEELE (1855 - 1933) and Anna SHEPPARD, who were married 7/6/1878. Charles & Anna have 6 children listed with birthdates. Charles STEELE was apparently a child of Aaron STEELE (b. 1822) and his wife Meroah, along with 5 other brothers and sisters. There are many spouses, births, deaths, and marriages listed. THE PHOTOS: There are 8 photos, each about 2 inches by 4 inches. A couple are tin-type. None have identifying writing, and they vary from a very old man with a long beard to a couple kids. In the photograph section, is written "Photos were taken in Ingersoll, Tilsonburg, and Woodstock - Ontario, Canada." I will sell this family bible for $250 (U.S.) plus professional packaging and shipping of the buyers choice (USPS, USP, insured/certified/etc. The shipping is estimated at $25.00 to east coast US, $40.00 west coast US, but will be computed to the specific address of the buyer. Please do not ask me for lookups in this bible - I posted that to the STEEL(E) lists over a year ago, and I'm sure they are archived. Thanks to all for reading this, I hope this treasure finds it's rightful home, Jackie in Virginia

Unfortunately it is another line of STEELEs from Ontario Providence. Therefore, I am offering it for sale, hoping it will find its way to a correct descendant. I am willing to identify the major family members, to narrow the search. Bible: Very large (over 12 lbs.) beautiful leather-embossed family bible from the middle 1800s. Over 800 pages, published in Ontario, with many beautiful color plates. Family data ranges from a birth in 1822 to a death in 1994 (yes, 1994). Overall the bible has worn edges, but is intact with all pages. Photographs: 7 total. 2 older ones on "tintype" (not paper). One is an elderly man (perhaps Aaron STEELE), with a mid chest length white beard in the Mennonite fashion (no mustache). 5 other photographs, taken in Ingersoll, Tilsonburg, and Woodstock - all in Ontario. The two newest photos, listed from the 1920s are of three children on a fence. On the back are the names Wylie "Doc" STEELE, Shirley "Pickle" KINDE, and George "Chip" CASE. Family info: This is the family bible of Charles R. STEELE and Anna SHEPPARD, including their marriage recording, who were married by Minister George Lawrence of the ME Church of Canada, in Ingersoll, Ontario Prov, on July 6th, 1878. Other data includes Charles's birthdate of 9/25/1855, "Annie"'s birthdate of 1/28/1856, the names and birthdates of their six children: Aaron Elwin, Charles Edward, Franklin Ernest, Sarah Maude, Lucinda Mae, Lily Ann. About a dozen additional births are listed, the oldest being Aaron STEELE, born 11/25/1822, who married Meroah (UNK), and they had six children: Laura, Charles (mentioned above), Ansel, Eliver, Walter, and Bertha. Many marriages and deaths are included also, including the surnames: BUXTON, WOZNACK, OLSON, HACKERT, DeROSA, GELINAS, FALLMER. Please do not write asking for "lookups" as I do not wish to handle it a lot, and I will not lay it out flat to make copies. I will sell this bible, including the photographs, for US $185.00 (money order, or cashiers check), which will include first class shipping and insurance to anywhere in the US or Canada. To an ancestor it is probably worth a lot more, but I only wish to recover my costs. First come -- first served. I will start a small "reservation" list, and the first response will have one week to send payment, or I will move to the second response, and so on. I will answer each requested reservation, to let you know where you are on the list, and to provide my snail-mail address as appropriate.

    3. Please could anyone help us with some family research. A William George (my wife's G.G.Gtrandfather) was born in Dublin in 1843 and joined the British Army (Probably the Royal Engineer's) and was posted to Nova Scotia in the 1860's. On the 15th December 1863 he married a local girl called Annie Steele. I am unsure where the wedding took place but I'm guessing at Halifax. They had several children born in Nova Scotia before returning to England, where Annie gave birth to several more children, approx. ten in total. She died in England in about 1890. Please could anyone help me trace the family history of Annie Steele? I keep drawing a blank. Many thanks, Richard Stimpson. (England).
