    3. Leslie, I don't know if this will be of any help to you or not, but while looking for my Silas Wesley Steele, who married Susan Jeanette Edwards of Farmer City, DeWitt County, Illinois I found a James Steele listed with the United Methodist Church in Farmer City. I probably have some record of my findings somewhere in my piles of paper, but can't seem to lay my hand on it for the moment. But am sure that a letter to the United Methodist Church, Farmer City, IL should be able to help you locate this man. Hope this will be of some assistance to you. Happy hunting, Alicemae Abbott ----- Original Message ----- From: <Timberwife@aol.com> To: <STEELE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 10:25 PM Subject: [STEELE-L] James A. 3. Just a point of interest; I too have a James Monroe Steele. Mine was born in 1838, VT, went to Iowa as a young man, served in the civil war for Iowa and died in Mich. in 1917. 3. Some notes and personal inspections of Cemeteries listed . Steele Cemetery listed in Greene County Pa at Garards Fort, Pa.is actually located on a hill overlooking Davistown Pa. Davistown today is not much more than an intersection of two roads and location of a school. The cemetery is entered by a partially hidden access road and traveled best by a truck or SUV. The distance up the hill is about 300 yards. Once there, the cemetery is or was in neglect . Most of the tombstones covered by weeds. The cemetery was once part of the David Steel farm which David started farming in 1820 and in early 1900, his son William formed a Steele Cemetery Corporation and deeded the land to the corporation. Today , it is part of State Game Lands. David was the first buried there at age 40 in 1842 To the South east of above Steele Cemetery lies the Steel/Debolt Cemetery, this Cemetery is inaccessible by normal means. It sits on corporate lands and posted with no trespassing signs . However, if one forges the Meadow Run stream , climbs up a 25 ft cliff, you can see my Great Grandfather James Steel's grave site and his wife and two daughters , one son and several grandchildren and one son in law. James Steel was a younger brother of David Steel above. In Friendsville Maryland, I could find no Steel tombstones , The Cemetery is about 3 to 4 acres and is well maintained. The Cemetery either housed a family of early Steel settlers or was once part of a Steel farm. Friendsville is a picturesque little village. Today, it is most noted for white water rafting as the day I visited it, the town was filled with pickups from a rafting club.. At Garards Fort PA, the cemetery there is also known as Garards Fort or Goshen Cemetery. There are many Steels and related families through marriage buried there .In fact, if one is tracing the several Steel families which settled in Greene Count y in early 1800s, one would have to check with Cornerstone Genealogical Society and Dorothy Hennen's collections of cemetery records to cover all possibilities of locating kin. Cornerstone Society is located at the Public Library in Waynesburg PA and is opened each afternoon at 1pm for 3hrs and on Sat. at 10 am till about 3PM. 3. My STEELES were in both areas so will start in the south and go back and north. WALTER DENTON STEELE b; 7/2/1905 in Sullivan Co., Missouri, was the first of seven children, my mother was #6. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN STEELE b: 9/27/1875 Clarke Co., Iowa, and EDITH CREASMAN b:4/20/1883 in Sullivan Co., MO "Frank" was the first of five children. Two died young, other 2 - Leroy Denton, 10/31/1881 and Charles Morton, 2/8/1885. Frank & Edith only had Walter in Missouri and the rest were born in Harney Co., Oregon not far from Burns. DENTON GEORGE STEELE b:3/10/1851 Pennsylvania, and MARY ELLEN BULLIN b:3/7/1853 Iowa or Kansas Denton is shown as Denton Still in the 1880 Clark Co. Iowa census. He was one of five children - Sarah abt. 1841 in MD., David abt. 1843 in MD., John B. abt 1845 in PA. and Isabella abt. 1847 in PA. Their parents were- JOHN H. STEELE b. 3/1/1818 in Pennsylvania and MARY ANN GEHR b. 10/20/1817 in Maryland, married 10-4-1838 in Washington Co., Maryland. On the 1840 census in Washington Co., Maryland there is a John & Mary Steele but shows 2 males 20-30, 2 females 20-30 and 1 female 10-15. I am not sure if this is the same family or not or who the other people might be. They appeared on the 1850 census in Henry Clay township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania with the first 4 children. I hope I connect with someone out there. This has taken me 3 years to just find out this much information. Dulca Baxter email addres is todulca@whidbey.com

    3. I have been trying to break down one of my "brick walls" now for several years. My 2nd great grandfather John Steele, was born May 16, 1843 in North Carolina, m: Lucinda J. Hoenecker (or may be Honaker, Honacre) Bef. 1870. He died in Collin County, TX December 29, 1916. My great grandfather Charles Robert Steele was born in Russell County, VA January 7, 1868. Lucinda was born December 8, 1838 I believe in Wythe County, VA and also died in Collin County, TX July 7, 1907. I have no clue as to who either of their parents were, thus my "brick wall". I have written the Bureau of Vital Statistics in TX for copies of their death certificates, but have not received anything yet. I have just recently found the following: John Steele age 27, is shown in the 1870 Russell County, VA Census (born in North Carolina) with Female Lucinda age 32. There is also a Male Charles age 21 and a Male Thomas J. age 7/12. I am not aware of a child for them named Thomas. Is it possible that Charles age 21 is brother of John? If anyone can shed any light on my "brick wall", I sure would be most appreciative. Billy McMenamy billybob@glade.net

    1. [STEELE-L] Re: James Steele
    2. Dear Dorinda, My cousin, Larry Steele of Fort Worth wrote the following to me: "There was a David C. Steele in Hill County at about the same time as our David E. David C's parents were James C Steele and Celia Green, and he was born Sept 18, 1829. They were from MO. He married Jemmia Hudson on Oct 13, 1870 in Hill County and had one son, James George Steele on Aug 9, 1871." Thus, I doubt that there is any connection. Our David E. Steele's brother, James, was James Franklin Steele. I have visited David E.'s grave in Scott's Chapel only once. I am amazed that you have seen it. Do you have any idea about your James C.'s parents? We are looking for our Thomas Steele's parents but we have not found any definite links. Good luck in your search. Sharon Steele Doyle Houston TX

    1. [STEELE-L] Sarah Steele b. abt 1734 Virginia
    2. Del&Vicki Woodall
    3. I am working on my husband's line and need help to identify the parents of Sarah Steele, b. about 1734 in (?) Goochland, VA. She married Sampson Woodall in Goochland, VA on March 24, 1756. I have seen postings on other lists (but e-mail addresses are no longer current so I haven't been able to contact the person) that suggest that Sarah Steele's parents may be Samuel and Catherine (Sampson) Steele. Can any one confirm or deny this? This is of particular interest to me because I too am a Steele married to a Woodall. Vicki Steele-Woodall

    1. [STEELE-L] James C. and Celia Green Steel
    2. Steve & Dorinda Marum
    3. I am looking for information in regard to James C. and Celia Green Steel who were married in Cape Girardeau, Mo. in 1821. James C. was born in Virginia. Celia was the youngest child of Robert and Elizabeth Green, who settled in Cape Giredeau in 1805. James C. and Celia later lived in New Madrid County, Mo.; after that they resided in Arkansas and finally came to Texas about 1850. They had a number of children, some of whom are David, Eliza Ann, Ninian, and Ellen. At one time they lived at Greenwade's Crossing or Greenwade's Mill on the Brazos River in Hill County. That area is under Lake Whitney now. One of their daughters, Eliza Ann Steel, married James Patrick Townsend in Hill County. The couple had four children, Mollie, Celie, Harvey, and Walter. The farm the Townsends owned in still in the family today. Mollie married John Clifford Garrison and settled on a farm less than a mile from where she was born. Dorinda Marum
