Many people have confused Ninian Steeles. In Rowan County, NC, at one time there were several Ninians. I have a lot of infomation concerning them, however, I have been out of the research for several years. Ninian Steel and Samuel were believed to of been brothers (In chester, pa) they both married sisters, both Furthey's. Some people will have you believe that Ninian who was in Chester County moved to Rowan County, however, he did not, it was his son Ninian who did. Robert Steele aka, Robert Steele the school master also had a son Ninian. This Ninian served in the revolutionary war and was married to Agnes Graham (per the war records, a receipt for some arms Agnes turned into the government after Ninan's death. Also, during this time, in Rowan County, NC, there was a Captian Ninian Steel, who died in 1813. Captian Ninian and the Ninian who married Agnes Graham are believed to be nephew/uncle. Samuel Steel for thunderhill, was well written of in Chester County, PA, he was trusted and known for his work will horses, and was asked to help purchase horses for the continental army. If you get a chance to visit the DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) in Washington or chester county pa, do so, it will aide in your research. Also, archives in Rowan County receives copies of "The Steele Report" which is a useful tool published by a man in Missouri who is a Steele researcher. He has sent copies of his work, and others to Rowan County. I hope this will give you some information, and be helpful to those who are looking for Ninian's! Good Rootin' Missi
Hi Bob Unfortunately, I don't think it is the same Isabella Steel that we have in common. Mine lived in Ford, Northumberland and her parents were Richard Steel and Marjory Robison. She was born in 1854. Disappointing...... All the best Marjorie
F.A.O Bob Bell Bob, My grandfather on my fathers side was William Bell Steele from Durham. As far as I can gather, his parents were a partnership as oppossed to a marriage, and the Bell side and Steele side became Bell-Steele. This was adopted by the second generation (my grandfather) with the Bell as a middle name as opposed to a hyphenated surname. The whole family moved from Low Fell in Durham to Cosby in Leicestershire in the 1940's Mike Steele M.J.Steele Senior Design & Development Manager

Hi Marjorie, I am looking for more information on your Isabella Steele. We believe that is the name of our gg-grandmother. Ours is supposed to have been born in about 1829 in Glascow Scotland. She supposably married a Robert Robertson and one of her children was a John Steele Robertson born Sept. 11, 1876. Any matches? My Steels it would appear all came from Ford, in Northumberland. My gt. gt. grandfather was Richard Steel married to Marjory Robison and they had several children namely, George, Joseph, Phillias, Eleanor, Isabella and Alice. George was a nurseryman, market gardener and specialised in pansies and violas. He named them after family and friends. One of the violas being called Frances. So some of the names are the same but at the moment I don't have any connection with Durham. Happy Hunting. Hi Listers, Among my grandmother Iva Steele's possessions when she died was a little booklet entitled "Memorial of Hon. John B. Steele, Died September 23, 1866." It was published in 1867 in Kingston, NY. Pasted inside the cover is an obituary for Ann Eliza Paddock Steele, the widow of the Hon. John B. Steele. A daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Brooks is mentioned in the obit. The booklet describes Judge Steele's death which occurred as the result of a fractured skull, broken ribs, and possibly internal injuries sustained when he was thrown from a horse drawn carriage. Also included in the booklet is the funeral address, various tributes from the Bar, the Democratic County Convention, the Masons, the Oddfellows, and the Press, as well as condolences from a few people, among others, that of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. "Judge Steele was the second of seven sons of Nathaniel Steele, who was among the earliest of the settlers of Delaware County". Several family members are mentioned in the Memorial: Siblings: Osman N. Steele who "was assassinated while sheriff during the anti-rent troubles". Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele, "now in command in Oregon". Isaac C. Steele George Steele Edgar Steele (all of above three were "large farmers in California". William Steele, the youngest, died in early infancy. Mrs. Green Moore, Esq. of Delhi, NY Wife of Hon. James B. Howe, of Newark Valley, Tioga County, NY. I am not sure why my Grandmother had this booklet. My Steeles immigrated from Scotland to Ontario and later to Minnesota. As far as I know my Steeles are not related to this family but perhaps there was a connection I'm not aware of. I would be happy to share this info with anyone who is interested. If you send me an e-mail with your snail mail address, I will mail you a copy. Vicki Steele Woodall El Sobrante, California
Oh by the way, where did you get this book or document? Is it available? Brenda
I will do . Thanks! Brenda
Brenda It's good to hear from you again. I obtained a biography of William Steele Sr. and Betsey Henger/Steele, it was a real blessing. I posted it up on my web page for you to see. I am in the process of building a "document and source" page to post the research documents I've gathered throughout the years. It's going to be an enormous project and may take a long time, but I think it might help others if I share them like this. Most of the links aren't working yet, but I did post this biography. If you have anything you'd like to post, please send it to me. This is the address of my home page: click "documents" then "Steele Documents" and next "William Steele Sr. Biography". http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~healey/index.html Let me know if you've found anything on William.
