A lot the first names are common in my family although, of course, it means nothing since they are common. My Steele's come from Miramichi, N.B. but have ties with Massachussets and possibly Vermont.

    3. Hi I think that when we establish the origins of the families from UK or Europe, then probably we would then know why there are so many lines. Seldom on this list have I seen connections across "the pond". From various records here in Scotland, I know I "have lost" two sets of children abt. 1730 and 1760, (I can only find the eldest son through land records) another generation born from 1791 onwards in Cambusnethan Parish Lanarkshire I have documents showing a David STEEL who completely disappeared without trace so far. He is recorded as "being Baillie of these parts". Probably something like a JP or lawman. Other members of this latter generation are showing up from death records, but even these are not very precise, and obviously they had to live past 1854 to have been registered. Did not intend for this to be so long, sorry. But if you know of a David STEEL showing up in USA or thereabouts, sometime after 1824, probably aged about 30, please let me know. Although I mostly lurk, I do read all the postings Many thanks Alex STEEL ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Ivers <mlrivers@msn.com> To: <STEELE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 4:17 PM Subject: Re: [STEELE-L] IOWA STEELE > And just to complicate the issue, I have Dallas Co., Iowa, Steeles' as well. 3. I have seen Steele and Steel used in the same family. You need to remember some of these people did not know how to spell. If you look at some of the records there are X's by there names and someone ales has decided how it was spelled. We have to judge our ancestor by their standards and not ours, Karen

    3. Those Steeles in Albia, Monroe County are probably mine. Scott(y) Steele, Isabella Steele, Frank Johnson Steele, Margaret Jeneva Besco Steele, John Garner Steele, just to name a few. However, just like with your two separate unrelated Steele lines you found in Appanoose County, there are some Steele lines in Monroe County that are not mine. I have always been frustrated by such finds. I say they are not mine, but you know, I really do believe they are mine, somehow, someway, I just can't make that connection. It could be that they are cousins, perhaps even brothers, to my oldest ancestors but their connection has been lost to time. On my Childers line I found two same named families living right next door to each other on a Texas census and cannot make the connection. Most frustrating !!! 3. I have a John H. STEELE b: Mar. 1, 1818 in Pennsylvania. He married Mary Ann GEHR on Oct. 4, 1838 in Washington Co., Maryland. They lived in Maryland until about 1845 when they moved back to Pennsylvania. In the 1850 census they were living in Henry Clay township, Fayette Co. PA. Their children were Sarah A. b: abt.1841-MD, David b:abt.1843 MD, John B. b: abt 1845 PA, Isabella b: abt 1847 PA, and my gr grandfather, Denton George b: Mar. 10, 1851 PA. Denton married Mary Ellen Bullin Dec. 31, 1874 - not sure where. They lived in Clarke Co., Iowa in 1875 when my grandfather, Benjamin Franklin was born and moved to Kansas probably late 1880 (after the Iowa census was taken). From Kansas they moved to Green Castle, Sullivan Co., Missouri. Denton and Mary Ellen had 5 children, three of which lived to be adults. They were Benjamin, Leroy Denton, and Charles Morton. I have a lot of info on the first two, but none on Charles except birth date. It is family legend that the Steele's were Scotch Irish but I have not been able to trace them past John H. If anyone can tie in with his family I would love to exchange records with them. Dulca Baxter todulca@whidbey.com

    2. I have found my family recorded both as STEEL/STEELE and MADISON/MADDISON! Until schooling was mandatory in England, there was much illiteracy. Several documents that I have gotten from England were signed by an "X". If the person was illiterate, names were spelled at the discretion of the recorder. I have family with both spellings. Doris
