I know that there is a disagreement among Steele researchers as to whether the Augustine Steele that was the father of Abraham b. abt 1773 is the same Augustine that was Augustine Stahl from Germany. Jim Sinclair hired a researcher who came up with Augustine Stahl from Germany; however, Jim later found out that this information is incorrect. See http://genforum.genealogy.com/steele/messages/5166.html Also, Willard Israel, author of the book "AUGUSTINE STAHL (STEELE) : Germany to America and Some of His Descendants" is said to have taken some of his information from Alice Grissom Hicks's book "Steele," and no one knows where she got her information. See http://genforum.genealogy.com/steele/messages/767.html Willard Israel's book is in libraries and can sometimes be found for sale on the web. No one that I know of can locate a copy of the book by Alice Hicks. I have a copy of Israel's book coming and had to pay an exhorbitant price for it. I ordered it before knowing that his information cannot be trusted. I'm hoping that some of the information he listed can give me some leads, though. I would imagine the book is a mixture of truth and untrue suppositions. I appreciate your passing along information you have gleaned from the internet. I'm always hopeful that some fact or hint sent by a kind soul like you will lead me to break through a brick wall! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Joshua Taylor, the father of Abraham, served prior to Nov 1777 per NC Rev Army Accts, VolXI, page 17, folio 3, NC Historical Commission, Raleigh, NC. France(i)s was his daughter, per Rutherford Co, NC Wills, p.84. She married Abraham Steele, born 1776 in VA, died early 1860's in Alabama. They married 5 Jan 1801 per Marriages of Rutherford Co, NC by Holcomb, p.140. My line is through their son George, born 1817 in NC. Williard Israel, part of this line, wrote a book Augustine Stahl(Steele) Germany to America and Some of His Descendants. In it This is some of his info. Augustine Steel (Stahl) was born in Germany 1720-1730. Took the oath of loyalty to the colony of PA in 1752. Abraham was his oldest child, indicated in the census that he was born in VA in 1774/75. Died in 1864/65 in St. Clair Co., AL. He married Frances Taylor, on 5 Jan 1800 (?). She was born in Rutherford Co, NC in 1771, died in 1865 in St. Clair, AL. Buried there in Deerman's Chapel Cemetery. They had the following children: Joshua Toliver, Sarah Frances, Mary, Nancy, James, Phalbean, Abraham K. George. The Taylor family, family of Frances Taylor Steele, came to Rutherford Co. NC in the 1750s-1760's. The earliest known of this family is Robert Taylor, born 1715 and died in Rutherford Co, NC 1807 as indicated in the filing of his will. Robert Taylor married Susannah Anderson. Their son Joshua Taylor was born 1740 as indicated in the obituary and died Jun 24, 1830 in Rutherford Co., NC as indicated in his obituary and the filing of his will. Joshua Taylor married Hannah Holland as indicated on page two of the Cawthon Family History . Joshua Taylor served as a private in the NC MIlitia during the American Rev. His father, Robert Taylor, provided goods to the army and a pay voucher exists for thie Patriotic service. Both Robert and Joshua Taylor were large land holders in Rutherford Co, NC. Both were slave owners. Abraham Steele and wife Frances Taylor received Negro woman and child at Joshua Taylor's death. I think Willard Israel has since died, but his book was published in 1995 by Bookcrafters, 613 Industrial Dr., PO Box 370, Chelsea, Michigan 48118-0370. His home address was 17890 Hwy 68W, Crossville, AL 35962 but I don't know if there is anyone there who might be able to get you a copy of the book. I hope this is of help to you.
