    3. Cool! I'd love to see that info on Andrew Steel. What year is he mentioned? We have an Andrew Steel/Steele here in Tennessee that we don't have parents for. His son, John was born about 1785 in Virginia. I do know that old Rowan County included what is now Ashe and Wilkes Counties, so it's possible he could have lived in Rowan County and also spent time in Virginia too. He was born about 1750 or so. Thanks for the clue. I'll have to get this publication. 3. I agree while WILL help they are not proof that a person was never a member of the family. Perhaps William died before the person making the WILL. In the case of death the child is not mention, but sometimes there children are but then not always. If the residency of a child is unknown then again the child could be left out of the will. It is very expensive to locate a person to receive the gift, when it is not known if they are dead or alive. I agree try to find another source to prove or disprove the relationship. 2. Donna Nichols
    3. I have in front of me, excerpts from "Biographical Annals of Cumberland County, PA" written by the Genealogical Society in 1903. page. 43 Steele Family According to this there were two John Steele's in Carlisle, Cumberland Co. 1. Rev. John Steele (my relative), who came from County Antrim, Londonderry, Ireland, in about 1743. He was an ordained Presbyterian minister. He also was a reknown Indian fighter during the French and Indian Wars, leading a charge against the Indians. He had been near the MD line but came to Carlisle in about 1759 to head up the Presbyterian Church there. (NOTE-there is paperwork about him at the Old Presbyterian Church). He served there until 1779 at his death. In the Steele National Repository, there is an Historical Sketch of the Lower West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, talking about Rev. John Steele. He did come into New London, after being ordained in Londonderry Presbytery before 1744. He was a prominent member of the Synod, a member of the Commission and was Moderator in 1750. He was married to Margaret Hutchinson, in Ireland. He had 7 children. His son, Capt. John Steele, married Agnes Moore. They all 4 are buried in the Old Carlisle Cemetary. I also have a copy of Rev. John Steele's will; in it, the executors include Ephraim Steele, Samuel Laird, John Agnew, John Steele. The will was proved on the 12th day of February, 1780. The other John Steele was a lawyer, married Agnes... who married a John Jordan after the death of her husband JOhn Steele. Their children were William, John, and Jean. Jean married a Gersham Craft. John was born 22Aug1764 and never married. He was in the military and was a Capt. He died on Nov. 6, 1800. His brothers Joseph and William, his brother William's son John and his cousin, Capt. William Steele were named in the will. Executors of the will were his mother Agnes Jordon, Ephraim Steele, merchant, and Gersham Craft of Trenton, NJ. The Biographical Annals has a great deal on this line of Steele's, Ninian among them. There is about 6 pages worth of info on them Donna __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. One problem on relying on wills for complete lists of children are people have problems within the family and are disinherited or completely written off and never mentioned again. Do you have another type of documentation supporting that William was not one of Samuel's children? Or does someone else have other documentation supporting that he is Samuel's child? That one falls in a grey area Michela Steele --

    3. Hi again, I believe the "fact" that William is listed as Samuel child is because in 1880 (120 years after the death of Samuel and 63 years after the death of William), John Kimble Steele, the Great Grandson of William b.1731 & Elizabeth Magee Steele) writes a letter to Gilbert Cope (who with J. Smith Futhey was writing the history of Chester Co., PA, by the way, generally a wonderful book!). In this letter, (it is at the Chester Co., PA Historical Society in West Chester, PA.), in part: "Friend Gilbert Cope. Your letter of inquiry in regard to Steele family that settled in New London and when and where they came from. I have been trying for years to trace the family back to its first coming to America. The Steeles, came from Ireland and were the so called Scotch Irish there no doubt..." He goes on the say that Wm was a son of Samuel, whose daughter Ruth married Robert Futhey (this is the Samuel in question). Then, "...Samuel Steele had some 7 or 8 children. His son James settled about Andrews Bridge & was a General.." This is incorrect even in Futhey Cope. This James is the son of a William who settled nearby in Lancaster, PA and married Rachel Kerr (Neubacher in his book says that Biographical Annals of Lancaster Co., says this William Steele was probably the youngest son of Ninian Steele (d. 1745)). Back to John Kimble Steele letter, he also says Steelville is named after our William, it is not, it is after this Lancaster family. Then he goes on to say that he got his info from his "Aunt Susanna" - she is in 1880 age 92, I believe she may be entitled to a little confusion. But then he says that: "...my venerable Aunt told me that two of her Grandfathers Brothers came to her Fathers and spent a week, they were Lawyers and were settled at Carlisle, PA. Another went to North Carolina." I only last week put together the fact that a family supposedly went to Cumberland Co., PA, a mother and six sons John, Thomas, William, Joseph, Samuel and Ephraim. They were from Ireland and their father, Samuel Steele (mother was Mary Stevenson Steele) had died. Two sons stayed in Ireland, Ninian a preacher, and James, a farmer with their sister Jinny. Now don't you think there is a high probability that this may be the correct Samuel? But how did our Wm end up in Chester Co.? And what of the other brothers (Ephraim is also easily found in Carlise)? Also I suspect the two Samuels were cousins Samuel from Ireland, perhaps their fathers (Ninian and Samuel??) were brothers. Rev John Steele of Carlisle PA had a son John Jr who was a lawyer. If anyone can shed any more light on this, I for one, would be extremely grateful. Oh John Kimble Steele concludes by saying "I want all the information I can get of that family and its descendents if I start my family tree with Samuel Steele." It looks to me like Futhey & Cope ran with the info from John Kimble Steele, altho they may well have had other sources, but I have found none and they don't state any and after all they were asking John Kimble Steele for an input. I hope I have not just confused everyone! Thanks for responding. 3. Maybe I am only adding to the confusion, since I don't even know my John Steele's (bef.1760-1823) ancestry or origins, much less anybody else's. But here is some of the info I've received on Ninian[s]. I kind of watch the name since it shows up close to where my other known folks were in PA & NC, and where they, and my John, ended up in KY. Since I've never seen the sources, I cannot speak to the authenticity, and since I'm new to the list I don't know if this has been discussed before. I hope something helps someone. As I said, it helps me to be able to eliminate "possibles" for my John Steele. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: Kathryn Weiss <buckeye@thegrid.net> To: PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com <PA-OLD-CHESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 12:32 PM Subject: Re: New to list >Hi, folks, >I've been "here" for a couple of weeks. From: Kathryn Weiss <buckeye@thegrid.net> To: Sandra Ferguson PA-Old-Chester-L Interesting. There is a Ninian Steele and a Robert Steele (and Luke Hamilton), on the Rowan County Tax List, now Iredell Co. area, taxables in the Fort Dobbs NC area for the year 1772, on the same tax list as the Carrickfergus Dobbins who were in Lancaster & Chester by 1740, and Rowan co by 1750. Are Ninian & Robert the same families? There may be other Chester names on this tax list - I don't know the Chester names well. But, I've been keeping an eye out for info on this Robert Steele. I'll see if I can find anything about Gen. James' son John - he may be the John Steele who ended up high in govt service, Mississippi, I think, childless. From: "Sandra Ferguson" -PA-Old-Chester-L To: "Kathryn Weiss" <buckeye@thegrid.net> Ninian had 4 sons - Robert, Samuel, Ninian and William. Samuel died in 1760, leaving 11 children, the sons - Robert, Samuel, Francis, Joseph, James, William and Ninian. the descendants of James moved to Western VA. Wm. son of Samuel had 1 son, John but he lived in Chester. "A branch of Ninian Steels, about the period of the Revolution, went to North Carolina,, and settled in the neighborhood of Charlotte "...this , from the History Of Chester Co. ============================================

    3. Have you ever run across the name "Andrew" Steele with your ancestors? We have an Andrew Steele, born possibly about 1750, who married Martha Buchanan, daughter of Archibald Buchanan and Agnes (Bowen) McFerrin-Buchanan. He died by 1830 in White County, TN. He was in Tennessee before 1787 with Archibald's family. Archibald Buchanan's family came from Augusta County, Virginia. We've not been able to prove Andrew's parentage, but his oldest son was Samuel Steele, born 1780 or 1782. 3. Hi Willie, The Steeles of Augusta Co. are very well known and documented. -- The father of Andrew is most probably Samuel Steele born 1709. The Steeles used the same names over and over -- Samuel in particular. There are others on the list that know a lot more about these people than I do. 3. Hi Faye Belt, Samuel does not have a son William b. 1731. I know that most references say he does have a son William, but he does not. His will very clearly lists all of the other children, but no william. I am a descendent of that William and at this point it is still unclear who his parents are. Recently I have forund some indication that he may be a brother of Rev John Steele of Carlisle, PA. That family and the ancestors of your Samuel Steele may be related a couple of generations back in Ireland. Names are very similar, ie William, John, Samuel and even Ninian. More research is clearly needed.
