    3. I may have some information on John L. and Susannah Steele, I found a John L. and Susannah Steele, in the 1850 census in Cedar Co. Iowa. These two children were living in the home of George and Ann Thorn. John L. was 12 years old and Susannah was 10 years old. Which would put their birth years about 1838 and 1840, John L. Steele entered the Civil War as a Lieutenant, and died at Oak Ridge, Tenn. as a Captain in 1863. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Toronto, Clinton County, Iowa This is what I have proof of, I also know John has present day relatives, so I am assuming he was married, there is a Harriet Steele, b. 1840 d. 1931 buried in Massillon Cemetery, Cedar Co., Iowa which may have been his wife, but am unable to find any marriage information at all. Susannah Steele, I really have no proof on, but My great grandfather William H. Emerson, married a Susan Steele, which I suspect is the same person as she. My g-grandfather William H. Emerson, was b. 1832. I do know that they are buried in Center Cemetery, Cedar County, Iowa . This cemetery has been abandon, and there are no stones in it. If these children were placed in another home, they may be the same Steele's, as the ones that Dorothy Crockett is looking for. The Thorn's came from England, through Canada also. Garla Steines

This is purely a guess, but perhaps a somewhat educated one. Millard is a family name. The original immigrant came to Rehoboth, Massachusetts, in the 1630s I believe. Some descendants migrated west to upper New York State. President Millard Fillmore, for instance, whose mother was a Millard, was from western New York. Many descendants of John Steele, a founder of Hartford, Connecticut, whose name appears on the Founders' Monument there, also moved westward through New York State. You might try looking for Millards who married Steeles in that part of the world. If you can hook up, you should be able to get back to earliest New England without any trouble. Good luck. John Steele Gordon

    3. I see you list CRAWFORD as one of your surnames. Do you know anything about Charles CRAWFORD, b circa 1858-1861 in Frederick Co., VA, m Lula STEELE, b circa 1888-1891 in Clarke Co., VA? I believe that Charles had at least 4 children, the youngest born (to Lula) in 1927 in Clarke Co. His last known location was Wadesville, VA. Lula's last known address was the "State Farm for the Feeble Minded," address unknown. Any leads on this family would be most helpful. 2. What Steele's are you looking for out of Michigan? My Steele's came from New York, too, went to Ohio for a time and then on to Ionia County Michigan. Their names were Reuben and Esthere(Harrington) Steel. Their children were Ella, Hattie, Cora, Ida, Nina, Bruce and Charlie. They settled in Ionia Co. sometime between 1860 and 1870. I would love to find some of the other descendants. Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks, Teresa teresa@thevillagelink.com

Some trees I've seen list her as the wife of James "the Weaver" Alexander, one of seven immigrant brothers to Cecil County, MD and others have her two generations later married to his descendant. Her father is listed as John Steele. I would appreciate any clues at all on Mary or her father!! Thanks! Diana

    3. I don't know if this is a connection for you or not. My maternal GGgrandmother was Margaret Dovey Steele b. 1831. Her father was John Sloan Steele b. 1785, m. 1812 in Mecklenburg, N.C.. The info I have came from Nick Green who said that John Sloan Steele "moved to Tn with his father early in life". That statement has always puzzled me a little since he obviously was about 27 years old when he married in N.C. John Sloan Steele had 11 children, 8 of whom moved to Owen Co., In. I have never tried to track John Sloan, but given the number of Steele's in Ky in the late 1700's to early 1800's that I have run across, it would not surprise me to find that there was some delay between leaving Tn and their arrival in Owen Co., In. I also know that one of Margaret Dovey Steele's brothers moved on to Iowa (Davis Co.) Margaret also had a brother who was a Presbyterian Minister, born in Knox Co., Tn and died in Spencertown, NY. Hope this may be of some help to you. I would welcome any additional info you may be able to share as well.
