Also check out Hardin Co, KY, in the 1780's and 1790's. There were some Steele's there. I have VanMeter, Vertrees, Haycraft--all given land grants by Patrick Henry for their service to VA and the nation fighting under George Rogers Clark. All these men came from PA also. Names in with these men included Swann, McNeil, and some of the others mentioned. I still haven't figured out how my Amelia Steele, daughter of Capt. John Steele of PA and VA, granddaughter of Rev. John Steele, met her husband, Dr. Drury Stith Feild in IL or TN, except that he was in the TN/KY border area, in 1835 or 36. Donna __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello Patt, Google is a search engine and very useful it is too. Type in http://www.google.com and ask it to search for what you want. I have wondered if he was of the Augusta Steeles, the John who later went to MS[?] & was a high govt official there, and, I think, d. childless. I believe that man had some time & land in early KY. Are you on the EKYORIGINS list? I think they had a discussion about that topic in the past year or so. If you're not on the list, you might want to try their archives. The Civil War caused many a person to change their last name in order to disacquaint themselves from someone they looked upon as a traitor. It was a sad time for families. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave and Linda Church (by way of Sue <sudown@cwnet.com>)" <dlchurch@bright.net> To: <STEELE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 13, 2001 2:00 PM Subject: [STEELE-L] Casteel/Steele > In the fourth quarter of the 1900 th. century, my Steele family of Eastern KY. changed there name from Casteel to Steele. In the fourth quarter of the 1900 th. century, my Steele family of Eastern KY. changed there name from Casteel to Steele. Does anyone have any idea why this happened. Dave Church dlchurch@bright.net
Looking for information on Lawrence Steele born Nov 10, 1907 Mapleton, Monona County, Iowa and died Jan 24, 1987 in Omaha. He is buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Mapleton, Iowa. He married Isabelle Jacoby Feb 28, 1949 in Mapleton, Iowa. I am descended through his uncle William Steele maried to Myrtle Leach. His parents were James H. Steele and Katherine Altmanshofer. Any information would be appreciated. Tracy
Sorry folks, I should have posted the disclaimer "that's all I found, but I _think_ the date would be 1790-1792." Reason I say that is the names are definitely 1790-92 type names together. However, the date I found on google for Morehead's address was 1840. So I can't say for sure. I was hoping someone could tell me. Sorry. We are swamped with a remodel project right now, but the list has been active on Kentucky & Indiana Steeles lately, and I am hoping someone has some connections, or new routes to follow. I have a _ton_ of varying early Kentucky Steele info in my database, I just don't know if any of them connect to my John Steele of Pendleton Co., KY by 1800. At that time, he had a 23 year old(est) daughter, so he had to be 40+. His wife was Elenor, and I _suspect_ a Ross. The strong clue there is traditional naming patterns. John's only son Robert (b.1780s) moved to Rush Co., IN about 1820 with a large family, but I don't know much about Robert. They were only in Pendleton County "briefly", as John d. 1823. his dau. Mary Steel signed Steele, but court documents are Steel. Mary m.1803 Wm. Griffing, who may be from Long Island Jasper Griffing. Mary was educated, & Wm Griffing was a minister. Each group of Steele's -- KY, NC, VA, and PA, and I even wonder about MA, offers some similarities. (names like John & Robert <bg>, or kin-connection names or whatever). I cannot find where my John Steele fits. Maybe my family legend is right, and they came from Scotland when the dau (my 3ggma) was 2 yrs old in 1779, but that would mean they ran a blockade, and they were still here for 20+ years before John showed up in Kentucky. It seems more likely he was already here. At the least, I'd like to be able to connect to or "eliminate" the other Steele families in KY among the earliest settlers. As I said, I have quite a bit of early KY information. Perhaps we could share info. We have been looking for years (two generations+), and just hope that this network has some help to offer... My aunt was a really good historian & genealogist, and it stumped her. She had the limitations of the times; where I have the potential of more information. I inherited some of her work, and would love to be able to give back to her, in spirit, by solving this mystery. Sorry for so wordy. It's brief or verbose right now, as I am so scattered with do it yourself construction, again my apologies. ... and Thanks Very much, Kathryn Jeanne Virtue wrote: > > Kathryn, > Yes, time frame is very important..were several John Steeles in Kentucky > history. > See History of Woodford County,Kentucky, by William E. Kathryn, Yes, time frame is very important..were several John Steeles in Kentucky history. See History of Woodford County,Kentucky, by William E. Railey, pages 42-43-44---gives the following Info. Col. William Steele represented the county in the Legislature of 1792, to frame the first Constitution of Kentucky and was a member of the convention held in Frankfort in 1799. His son John who married Catharine Swann Railey in 1816, was a member of the Legislature in 1846. BIographical sketch of these Woodford Co. I mentioned in the first post a Grandfather Daniel from Kentucky or the Carolinas. It seems GAunt Julia was talking about Daniel Sheets(z) Her maternal Grandfather. I had to get a magnifying glass out to see the last name. Back to square one, no first name for Edwins father.
Hello, I am looking for the parents of Edwin Palentine Glasscock STEELE b, 1857 in Ohio, but lived in Massac Co. Ill. his adult life. He is buried in Metropolis. He was married to Ada E. SHEETS (dau. of Theodore D. Sheets and Desdemona Stith) . They had 5 children. Marshall Hawley b.1882 Julia 1884 m. Bert Cummins and moved to Minn. Emma 1887 m. Kennedy Samuel b.1890 m. Elizabeth Fay (My Grandparents) Clarence 1904 moved to Minn. I think Sam and Bessie had: Edwin James Donald Dixon (my Dad) Rosemary George In some old letters, G'Aunt Julia (Edwins Daughter and in her 90's at the time) mentions that her Grandfather who may be named "Daniel" came from Kentucky and The Carolina's..that narrows it down..LOL She also mentions Her Grandmother Julia A. Parker from Mass. or Pa., but doesn't say if she is the mother of Edwin or a second wife as she also mentions that Glasscock could be his mothers maiden name. Edwin had an older brother named George who died of yellow fever in the C.W. Buried at Vicksburg. I can use all the help I can get! Thanks, Mary
