Greetings, My grandfather was a John Wesley Steele who I know spent some time near New Plymouth, Ohio in Vinton County, OH, since my mom was born there in 1917. My grandmother's name was Gladys Haas. Do you all have any decendants lists in the southern and south-eastern Ohio area? I admit I am just beginning my Steele research but would love to make a connection in my area. I'll post a more intelligent query when I get some dates under my belt for my Steele side. tnx, john evans - jaevans@codenet.net
Debby, It would appear that we may be talking about the same person. If so, your John#1's father was also John, Sr. John Steele, Sr. was born in 1772 and died in 1876 in Asihland Co., Ohio. Debby, I will contact you directly and see what comparisons can be made. Thank you, Richard Steele Davis dicdavis@yahoo.com
Hello Richard -- My John #1 was born 12 Aug 1804, died 28 July 1867. His son, John Wesley Steele's dates are 9 Feb -1852 - 1913. Do these dates match with anything you have? I agree with a statement my mother-in-law made about the Lees in Virginia -- somebody should have given them a book of baby names! Everybody has the same name -- so confusing. Please ffeel free to email me directly: debbylynnr@care2.com Thanks so much! Debby Steele Rogers
For those of you whose ancestors came to Ohio from Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania is bringing the State Archives online. Revolutionary War records are among the records which are currently available on the brand-new website. http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/ I copied this from another list, but I thought the Steeles might be interested. Lynn
I am trying to get in touch with John P. Neill of Cincinnati, Ohio that wrote the book "THE ANCESTRY OF LOUIS COLEMAN STEELE", I found the book in Mercer Co, Ky Historical Society. They have my family in the book and would love to get in touch with them. LOIS Sharp
This seems to be a kind of whos who list put out by the University of Oklahoma, but it includes names from all over the world. http://www.biblio.tu-bs.de/acwww25u/wbi_en/ Jack Childers in OKC International Society of BlackSheep Genealogists http://www.gbnf.com/genealogy/childers/html/surnames.htm
Deborah have seven John Steeles in my data base. The one that comes the closest to yours was the son of Jacob Steele and Mary Elizabeth Smith. I believe they lived near Saxton, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Might this be the same John Steele of interest to you? Richard Steele Davis dicdavis@yahoo.com
John married Elizabeth LINVILLE (nee EDWARDS) (1818-1903) in 1850 (Elizabeth's parents probably James (1784-1851) and Susan (1793-1870)) At least one child: John Wesley STEELE (1852-1913) John Wesley married Almeda (sp?) At least one child: Martin Luther John (1879-1920) Martin L.J. married Merle Linville (I think Linville was a middle name) They had 5 children: John Martin (1904 - about 1979) Arnold (1906 - 1922) Richard (1909 - middle 1940s) Edward (1913 - 1994) Mary (1916 - about 1996) Would like to know about the elder John's family -- parents, siblings, other children, where he came from. Would also like to know about the Edwards family. Either post or email me directly: debbylynnr@care2.com Thanks in advance for any information, Debby Steele Rogers
Hi-- Do you have a John Steele 1804-1867? Debby
Hello--I realize that its been a long time since you posted this message, but I hope you're still reading the board. Do you have a John Steele in your line who was born 1804, died 1867?
Do you have a John STEELE born in 1804, died in 1867?
Do you know if one of Samul's descendents was John (1804-1867)?
I have a John who was born in 1804. He married Elizabeth Linville, nee Edwards, in 1851. They had at least one child, John Wesley Steele, born in 1852. John (the elder) died in 1867. Any relation?
With all the focus recently on men named John Steele in Kentucky, I thought I should ask if anyone has information on mine. My 3rd Great Grandfather was named John Washington Steele, and he was most likely born about 1825/1826 in Kentucky. My family records say he was born 8/8/1821 in Booneville, Kentucky, but I suspect that is incorrect. He might have been born in someplace called Booneville, or in Boone County. The one place I could find called Booneville, was not called that until 1846, though I suppose it's possible he was born there before it was named Booneville. John married Mary Ann Foster 18 Jan 1847 in Jennings County, Indiana. Their children were all born in Indiana and John died 24 Jan 1875 in Coles Co, Illinois. Another researcher on this list (Clyde Steele) found evidence that he may have had a sister named Elizabeth who married Cornelius B. Taulman on 28 dec 1848. In the 1850 Census Cornelius and Elizabeth Tollman are listed next to John and Mary Ann Steele and Elizabeth's place of birth is listed as KY. John might also have another sister named Lettitia. A Lettitia Steele (Stull) married Charles Darling 23 Oct 1856 in Coles Co, Illinois. I think John Washington Steele's father was named John Steele as well, though I have no solid evidence of that. It is possible that the elder Steele moved from Kentucky to Indiana before 1847 and to Illinois before 1856 (this is speculation only). John and Mary Ann's children are: Elizabeth Jane Steele, b 9 Oct 1847, Jennings Co, Indiana (married Richard Fowler) William Taylor Steele, b. 7 Apr 1850, Jennings Co, Indiana (married Cynthia A. Cook) Samuel Pratt Steele, b. 19 Mar 1853, Jackson Co, Indiana (died abt 1868) Ophelia Steele, b. 26 Sep 1856, Jackson Co, Indiana (married Hi Lawrence) Phebe Ann Steele, b. 21 July 1860, Indiana (married Pete White) Marietta Steele, b. 25 Mar 1863, Indiana (married David Boice) Frances Newton Steele, b. 8 Mar 1868, Moiltrie, Jackson Co, Indiana (married Susanna Single) Letitia Steele, b. 14 Feb 1869, Jackson Co, Indiana (married Biff Lawrence then Aaron Bascomb) jim
Looking for James Dallas Steele from the south; he used to do drywall finishing in Toledo. Ohio; with his buddy Ralph Griggs and brother-in-law Willie. We are trying to have a reunion with these people in Toledo. They worked in the Toledo, Ohio area in the late 1960's to early 1970's. Most of us hung out at either the cabin club or Tremainsville Garden clubs. Would love to have them at our reunion. Please send all info asap to Mstique54@yahoo.com this means so much as some people are ill and would like a get together before it's too late. thank you Mstique54@yahoo.com
Does anyone have a link with Steel gong back to birth place in the Netherlands. I am looking for the surname of VAN STEEL that travelled year unknown from Holland to America. I have found NO variation in the spelling to date.
Seek information on Thomas STEELE, son of William STEELE and Sally LAMB, b. abt. 1847, Ireland; died 15 July 1922, Londonderry, Ireland. He married Martha WILSON, daughter of Thomas WILSON and Sarah CARMICHAEL. She was b. 1871, Bogstown, Londonderry, Ireland; died 1946, Quebec, Canada.
Other names in Hardin Co included Harrod, Gerrard (Baptist Minister), Todd, Boone, ; all these men were in KY while it was still part of VA, so I would say the time frame was prior to 1795.
