Thank > you for your time. > There are probably lots on the list with ancestors that go back to Ireland, but we haven't found it yet! :-) I've been reading a book, "Scots-Irish in hills of Tennessee" by Bill Kennedy. If you have early Steel(e)s [mid to late 1700's] that were originally from middle & lower Scotland then they could easily have been in the bunch that migrated to northern Ireland and then later to colonies in America. I haven't found my Irish or Scottish link back across the pond yet, but working on it! Jeri
The only info I have on Marshall was in that last post. My Great uncle was born in Stithton Ky. in 1882. His parents moved to Massac co. (Metropolis area). I know that at some time as an adult he moved to Minn. I would like to know what dates you have on your Marshall. This could be my Marshalls son. Marshall's dad (Edwin Palentine Steele "E.P.)was born in Ohio, he married Ada Sheets from Stiton Ky and lived there for a time Then moved to Metropolis. If your Marshall was born sometime between 1900 to 1920 we could have a match.

Hello Fellow Researchers, I am new to this list so please forgive me if my questions are redundant. I have an ancestor, Hiram LAFFERTY who was born 1736 in Dublin, Ireland. There is, of course, no mention of his wifes name. However he had three male children, no mention of females. Names were: William Lafferty b. abt.1760, Dublin STEEL Lafferty b. ??? Todd Lafferty b. ??? William (mentioned above) immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland, 1810. Entered military service 1/08/1815 and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. His wife is, of course, not mentioned. He had 14 children and his first born son, was named STEEL. They settled in W.V. This name, STEEL, keeps occurring in every generation until just recently. I've been told that STEEL is a royal name and naming sons after the mothers maiden name was her only way to make sure her descendants knew who and where they came from. I do have some census stating this name was in Ireland in and before 1736 and in the general vicinity of Dublin. Does anyone have anything on this? Thank you so much for your time, Frances West
I have family from SC and William is a common name passed down through several generatins. They are all from the York Co. area as near as I can tell. Where are yours from?
"Dempster"--Joanne and I have been trying to examine our individual Steele families to see if we have a link. My gr-gr-grandfather, Hugh Steel (b. 1770) married Catharine Dunn in 1796-KY). They evidently (not proven) had a son Hugh Steele (b. abt. 1809; married Sarah/Sally Smith) and another son, William Henderson Steele (b. 1814; married Eliza Wilson)--9 children found, in total. With her "Henderson"-named ancestor (Hugh Henderson Steele) is seems like a coincidence worthy of some research. There was a grandson, Samuel M. (Marshall, we think) Steele, who died very young--1835-1838. Most of these people are buried in the Hebron Baptist Church Cem., in Madison (Jefferson), Indiana. Anything sound familiar? Sherry Steele (Seattle)
Saw the note on the list, Joanne. Are you trying to make a link between Samuel H. Steele, my great grandfather, and the Henderson family? Nancy
This is a very LONG shot, but what caught my eye is the WA connection and the "Lester" (?) name. I live in Seattle and my Steeles came here in 1865. My father's name was William Lester Steele (1896-1962). I have not proven the source of his middle name, although I have a lead. His parents were Joseph William Steele (1842-1912) and Mertie Annette Miller (1869-1937). I have more if need be. There might be a connection to Nebraska on Mertie's side, and there were others named Rachel. What does the "middle initial "M" stand for? Could it be "Marshall"? Sherry Steele (Seattle)
