I have a Minerva Ann Steele in an adjacent line of mine, being born in Indiana, (most likely, but not proven), in 1852; died and is buried in Indiana in 1885. She was the daughter of William Henderson Steele and his wife, Eliza Wilson. All are buried in Indiana, along with a lot of other Steeles and Wilsons, and that is what makes me guess that Minerva was probably also born there. Wm. H. Steele is a son of Hugh Steel and Catharine Dunn, married in 1796 in KY. Sherry Steele (Seattle)
Sherry, Yes, we are baking...desperately need rain here for the crops... in our area... about half an inch in the last three weeks... We were in Manhattan, Kansas, for my brother Jim's daughter's wedding... on Aug. 4th, temps were 101-102-103--- Finally cooled off here in time for my Kiwanis Convention that I mentioned. I was chairman for a group of 500 plus people coming into Sioux City for a 3 day affair. All went well, now to do the evaluations and get the bills paid. Then, I can get back to housework and my art work and getting the copies you wanted and doing some more research. Right now, the note book correspondence between your Pete and my aunt was what I am missing. More later... nice to hear from you. At 01:16 AM 8/10/01 EDT, you wrote: >Hi, Jeanne! I have Minerva Steele born about 1818-20 in MS. I have been trying to connect her to some of the other Steele families living in MS (probably in Natchez area) at that time. She has been a real dead-end.
Sherry, Looking through all my notes I noticed a William Steele in our chain of relatives born just one year away from the one you mentioned.(1813, 1814) Did Joanne mention this one ? an easy error on either side. It has him marrying in OH. His wife's first name is very similar to the one you listed: Eliza, Elizabeth, but the last name is HOLYCROSS. A death date for William Steele is 1877. Perhaps worth rechecking. Where did your family go after KY? Mine went to KS. Then my particular branch returned to IN around the turn of the century. I also believe there is somewhat of a link between our families, but I just haven't found it yet. I'll keep searching. Nancy
no my Henderson is connected to the DENNIS
Great Vicky, I will start digging. maybe I was right and this is a son of my Marshall. I don't have a death date for him but I should be able to find one in the SS index. I'll let you know! Mary
I gave you all the info I have except the Marshall I'm looking for was born on june 20, 1920 I think. I was told that his father died before he was born in an accident thanks vicki

Hi, Jeanne! I saw and read your reply to this same message, after I had sent mine! I am working on a package of papers for you. So far, I have copied the 3-ring notebook for you, but want to get more together. Please let me know what specifics are of interest to you. Hope you are not baking in the heat I have been hearing about!! Sherry
This is probably a long shot, but here goes: In my family we have a Hugh Steel, born somewhere in 1770 (so says his grave in Indiana), but we are having a hard time finding solid information on him before this. He had 9 children, starting in 1797, the year after he married Catharine Dunn in KY in 1796. They were Jane (1797), Joseph (1798), Mary ("Polly") (1800), John (1803), James William (1804--my line), Thomas (1806), Hugh (1809), William Henderson (1814) and Marshall (1816). Unproven stories say both Hugh (#1) and wife, Catharine, were from Ireland~Scotland, but so far have absolutely no proof, except that the names themselves are typical names from those countries. I have more or less information on all these people, including contact with descendants ("HI, Everybody!"). Comments and information welcome!! Sherry Steele (Seattle)
I looked up your website, and was told it was "available", meaning there was nothing on it. Is it under construction?
I see that you have a lot of nebraska Steele's. Are you related to W.R. Steele, who came to CO from NE in 1859 to serve as the first, unofficial governor of CO, before it was an official territory and when it was named Jefferson? Howard Snooks
Are you related in any way to Russel Morgan Hough and Nancy Evaline Steele? They lived many years in Neola, Iowa. "Nannie" was the daughter of Fielding Steele and Jane Isabel Brooks. My e-mail is patmar5@juno.com.
Hello... Several of us have ancestors who go back to Ireland and/or Scotland... Speaking of Irish journalist, Billy Kennedy, he will be presenting a lecture in my hometown, Blountville in Sullivan County, Tennessee on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sullivan County Library. Lecture fees are $15, and you must be pre-registered. For anyone who is interested, you may check my website at www.huntgenealogy.com/kennedy.htm for further details, as this will be sponsored by Hunt Multimedia Genealogy and the Sullivan County Genealogical Society. I personally descend from Rev. William Steele, born 1754 Charles Co., MD, who resided in Surry and Stokes Counties, North Carolina. I've been working on a manuscript for William Steele and his descendants for nearly 20 years, and hope to finalize it for publication this winter. Happy hunting... Hello Steele researchers. I would like for you to go to my Steele site and see if any of you can connect with my family. I am back to 1818 , but can get back no further . Maybe someone out there will recognize some of the names dates and locations. Thanks Mike Steele http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/Michael-Wayne-Steele/
To Becky... Pleased to see the name Hugh Steele... My ancestor was Hugh Steele or Steel who lived first in Bourbon Co., Kentucky then moved to Jefferson Co., (Town of Madison) Indiana. He was married 12-13-1796 in Bourbon Co. to Catherine Dunn.... they had several children... daughters Jane, Mary and Sons Joseph, James, Thomas, Hugh, William, & Marshall. I found a Hugh born in Adams Co., PA in 1770, the son of a Joseph Steele. Another Steele family also living in same area at that time...We have no proof that the PA. Hugh is the same as the ancestor who married in Bourbon Co. Could this be some of the same family. Would be interested in hearing more from you. THere is also a ship's captain... Hugh Steele who keeps coming up in searches, have not been able to connect him to our family as yet. Jeanne V. To Fran, My Steele ancestors were in County Antrim, Northern Ireland by the early 1700s. A cousin did quite a bit of research on them in the 60s. He traced them back to Berwickshire, Scotland in the 1600s. There is coat of arms for them in the Scots Amorial, 1624. It is the same coat of arms that is on tombstones in Corkermain, Cairncastle Parish, County Antrim. No one has located the names of ancestors in Scotland yet (I hope to start on that soon). The earliest Steele we know of, of this family is Archibald (his will is dated 1742). He had a son Hugh. Hugh had sons Hugh, James, John, and William. Hugh II born 17567, died 1810; had daughters, Martha, Jane James, born 1761. Married Jennet Smith. Had daughter, Mary before family emigrated to U.S. in 1787. Were in Fairfield County, S.C. until 1815; in Caldwell Co., KY until 1829; then to Perry County, ILL, where James died in 1836. Other children of James and Jennet: Samuel (died at sea), Jane, Catherine, Elenor, John, and Jennet John, will is dated 1803 in County Antrim. Had son, Hugh William, died 1835. Had Margaret, Elizabeth, Jane, Hugh Do not have any information on siblings of James. Efforts were made to find descendants of their children, but apparently no luck. There were other Steele in County Antrim, but have no idea if they were related. Beckey Turner
Go to www.genforum.com, there is a posting by Otis Slusher in the Steele surname forum. I believe he's listed everything you'd like to know about Thomas Jefferson Steele and his wife, Emmaline Anderson. You can probably help Otis, too, by sharing your information about Sylvania Irene. Brian
my grandfather Frank came from Polisworth England, born 1896 or 1897 married Eugenia Alys Payne from North Dakota.brothers were Harry , Walter, Dave and sisters Elizabeth and Violet.
