Patt, Yes, I have a lot of the info dating back into the present day of my line. I have corresponded with three of Silas' ggrandchildren, but so far they have not really had any information that I didn't have. Plus they have never given me their direct line other than who their father or mother was. I will be be obtaining that information soon, I hope. But I have been trying to move back into Silas' early years to see if he had any siblings, in the hopes that they may have more info on Silas'. My dad, his brother, Roger, and sister, Marguerite have always insisted that Silas was a Methodist preacher, but I have never been able to document this fact. And actually the collateral lines have always appeared to be surprised by this. But their memories are so intense on this subject, I can't help but believe them. The stories that they have told of him making them stand for what seemed like hours while he prayed and preached hell and damnation all hold together. For each of them have told simular stories. But on his patent papers and his death certificate (funeral papers) he is listed as a farmer. I just feel that if I could find out more about his young childhood, siblings etc. it might be a lead to proving or disproving this family story. Silas Wesley Steele died in 1933, before I was born, and if there are any family records, they certainly didn't go to our family. Did you want me to send you a copy of what I have? Do you have access to a fax machine? If so I can send you a copy of my Steele papers. I find it frustrating to be living in Canada and not have access to a library that hold books that would be of assistance to my research. I made contact with a Morman historian that was to help me do some digging, but he appears to have disappeared for the summer. I am rambling, I do hope that I answered the question that you asked. Thank you for responding, I do appreciate it. I may have missed something from a previous posting, have you got the present lineage or are you starting in the early years? He may have had a middle name he went by or Steele may have been spelled differently.I have the later years if you have anything later.Patt http://community.webtv.net/coolPatt/Yesterdaysflowers
I have been watching all of these entries of John Steele, hoping and praying for a John Steele born in Virginia; married to a Elizabeth Lair also of Virginia. Lived in Ohio where their son Silas Wesley Steele was born ca 1850. I can't believe that with all the activity on this site, that no one is connected to my John Steele. One of these days I do hope to cross this steel wall that is between me and any progress of my line. My information is so sketchy, and what I have managed to get has come from Silas' funeral information. Pretty limited, I must admit. If any one has any clues for me, I would certainly be grateful. Have you check in Alabama. there is alot of steele there. I am kin to half of them Janice
Hi I was just curious in you know of any Steele move to America before the 1700. That would have landed in Charleston south Carolinaand had a son names John Steele Thank You Janice
Fran, Although your question was directed to Nancy, I will reply as well! My Steel(e)s were in Bourbon County. I have no idea WHERE in Bourbon County, though. I know there is more to it than Paris! I know it was a county of VA not too long before my people were there (I have a marriage in 1796)--I believe it became a state of its own in 1792, or so. So maybe they were in VA as well! I'd like to know that, too! Sherry Steele (Seattle)
Howard, Where is W R Steele from? Date of birth? Thanks. June S. Walton
Dear Sherry and Nancy, Pardon me Ladies for butting in, but Nancy, could you tell me please where you STEELE's were in KY? I've missed a few postings. Hubby thought he was doing me a big favor and cleaned up my e-mail box!! Thank you, Fran
Does anyone know of a Clarkie Steele? He was my grandfather's brother. My grandfather, Milo, was born in 1897 probably in eastern OH. They lived in western PA in Lawrence County. They had brothers Walker and Lloyd and sisters Florence and Irene. I believe their parents were John B. and Melissa Kariher. John's parents were David and Elizabeth. Melissa's parents were Minerva and John. About 30 years ago my great-aunt told me about Clarkie and no one in the family believes me. I didn't make him up! Thanks for any help. Connie
I'm looking for a Clark (maybe called Clarkie?) Steele who was my grandfather's brother. Other brothers were Lloyd and Walker, and sisters were Florence and Irene. My grandfather, Milo, was born in 1897 and they lived in western PA near New Castle, or eastern OH. Is this a possibility? Thanks.
Do you know if this David Steele was buried at Mr. Jackson (PA or OH?) Some of the names you gave fit, but I'm not sure if all of my info. is accurate. I'm just starting. Thanks
RE: W.R. Steele--I don't know who is parents were. I am directly related to a relative of his, either a brother or a cousin, and thought perhaps someone would know of W.R. becvause of his historical significance. Thanks for responding. Howard
Sharon, did you ever hear from anyone on your query? I'm indirectly related via Samuel, an older brother of John Steele Jr. Since we moved to CO in 2000 I have been to the cemetery in Red Mesa CO where some of your kin are buried; also Jackson Lake NM (outside of Farmington) is said to have been named for Susannah Jackson, John Jr's first wife. Be happy to share research going back to the John Steele Sr. "brick wall" and also dig out some direct family contacts for you if you've not heard from any of them.
I have no idea if I am related to him or not. There are alot of Steele's that I have where I dont have children listed for them. It could be a possibility though. If I come across anything though, I will let you know. Do you know who his parents were? Tracy
Delynn, we are related--your John Garner Steele was the brother of my Margaret Lavinia Steel Underwood Besco. I would love to hear form you and will hsare information with you. Are you on Jack Childers Besco/Steele family list? Write me and we will talk!
The John Steele you mention, married to Nancy Goodnight, fits the very man we have been looking for. He did have a son named scott as far as we know. I would love to hear from you and discuss this. e-mail me, please?
it is under construction.
I have not seen him in my records, but that doesn't mean that we are related
"Dempster", I really have only basic info on William Henderson Steele, an adjacent line to mine. Both my line (James William Steele) and Wm. H. Steele's are sons of Hugh Steel and Catharine Dunn, married in KY in 1796. I first found Wm.H. listed in the "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" (XIII-5/20), as a burial in the Hebron Baptist Church cemetery in Madison (Jefferson) Indiana. This cemetery has been transcribed by Ruth Hoggatt and another woman (whose name escapes me), and appears in Ruth's wonderful, informative website www.myindianahome.com (or.net?). In March, I had a rare opportunity to be in Indiana and I visited this cemetery with Ruth Hoggatt, so I can vouch for the fact that the graves are there, at least! I believe all 9 children born to Hugh and Catharine were born in IN, the earliest being Jane, born in IN in 1797, so they moved on from KY to IN very early in their marriage. There is a Hugh Steel listed in the 1790 Census in Bourbon Co. KY, which I believe is probably him. His grave says he was born in 1770, but I have no idea as to where or who his parents or siblings were. According to my findings, Wm.H. and Eliza had 7 children, only one of which grew to maturity, daughter Minerva Ann (1852-1885). That is really all I know of this particular William Steele. The name has carried on down through many other descendants in all the various family lines. Sherry Steele (Seattle)
