Starting with my father going back on the paternal side, then the maternal side of the family. Hope that you can follow, I have put the spouse in brackets. () Glenn Wesley Hannegan (Augusta Messer) son of William Daniel Hannegan (Eva Mae Steele) son of Daniel Willam Hannegan (Margaret Wyley) son of Daniel Hannegan (Catherine Carroll) Glenn Wesley Hannegan son of Eva Mae Steele; daughter of Silas Wesley Steele(Susan Jeanette 'Nettie' Edwards); son of John Steele. In short form, Silas Wesley Steele was my father's grandfather on his maternal side. My father, Glenn, was born in Eddy, Kay County, IT in 1905. Wm. Daniel Hannegan was born in New Oregon, Howard County, IA in Aug 1870. Daniel Wm Hannegan was born in Carleton Place, Ontario in May 1841. Daniel Hannegan was born in Ireland ca 1785 And oddly enough, on the census that I have managed to find, the Hannegan's are all listed as educated. I believe the differences in the spelling of our name, and there are seven different spellings that I have found so far, had to do with their gaelic accent. The original spelling supposedly was Oh'Annachain or Oh'Annagain. The Steele's I don't know about, but if they were ministers or preachers, as they would have been called then, I would presume that they were educated too. But that is just a guess, since Silas was dead before I was born. I know that his wife Nettie was educated though. I have a picture of her, her daughter Eva Mae with my father and I, representing the four generations alive. Nettie died in 1944 when she was 90 yrs, 10 mo and 7 da old. I do have several pictures of Silas, Nettie and their children sent to me by a cousin from Texas. I also have several obits, but not Silas'. And to really show how dumb I can be, what is Lib.Va. Us. ?? I can use any help or leads that you can offer. Thanks for your offer to keep your eyes open for me. There seem to be many Methodist ministers who are Steele's,though their occupation may be listed as a farmer. Is it possible they were Wesleyan Methodist and name their sons to keep the name alive? Just a thought.Patt http://community.webtv.net/coolPatt/Yesterdaysflowers
Could the William Taylor,Arkansas, have been married twice? The dates would be right since Charles was born in 1880.It's also rumored that they were from Missouri,Kentucky, moving a lot. Thanks Patt http://community.webtv.net/coolPatt/Yesterdaysflowers
I don't believe we've talked before,I appreciate your reply. The only information I have for Taylor Steele is that he was married to Mary (one says ,or)Mary Aveline, had eight children, seven boys, one girl. One boy is listed as half, unk. whether fro previous marriage or not.One son Charles Burn was born in Va. in 1880,other dates unk. or where they are.Chars marrie Collonial Griffith and had thirteen children. The other children's names were,William,David,Robert,Oscar,Grover,Thomas(listed as half) and Lila MayI have almost nothing beyond Taylor.,they were said to move a lot,but no records have been found. http://community.webtv.net/coolPatt/Yesterdaysflowers

Question- has anyone looked into the occurrences of the middle name Wesley among Steeles?? Was this a common middle name regardless of surname or is there a historical connection. I have a few John Wesley Steeles in my history but note that there are many other seemingly non-connected John Wesley Steeles and am curious about this. My John Wesley Steeles (my grandfather and great grandfather) were in/from the Vinton County, OH area. john evans - a real newbie at this genealogy Alicemae Abbott wrote: > I have been watching all of these entries of John Steele, hoping and praying > for a John Steele born in Virginia; married to a Elizabeth Lair also of > Virginia. Patt, I may have exchanged emails with you before, but I wanted to double check. You mentioned you are looking for a Taylor Steele. What details do you have about Taylor? The reason I ask is that I have two Steeles in my family tree with the middle name of Taylor, and the older one could possibly be your Taylor's father, if the rest of the data matches. Here is the info I have: Richard Taylor Steele, b. 11 Sep 1915 in Collinsville, Oklahoma his father was Francis Pratt Steele, b. 29 March 1891 in Nevada, Missouri his father was William Taylor Steele b. 7 April 1850 in Jennings County, Indiana he married 15 February 1877 in Corning, Arkansas to Cynthia A. Cook, b. 8 July 1857 in Tipton, Marion County, Indiana William Taylor Steele's parents were John Washington Steele and Mary Ann Foster. John Washington Steele was born in Booneville, Kentucky in 1825/1826. The family lived in Coles County, Illinois in 1870. I have lots of other family information, including all the children of John Washington Steele and Mary Ann Foster, but I don't know any other children or grandchildren of William Taylor Steele. Considering that William Taylor Steele and Cynthia Cook were married in Arkansas in 1877, even though they were both born in Indiana, leads me to believe they may have been travelling in the south. Could your Taylor Steele be their child? They both died in the 1920s in Iola, Kansas. jim
It is funny you saying that you are remodeling. That is what I have been doing since the middle of May. Which is why I am having problems locating all of my info easily. It is here in what is now being used as my office. But papers are stacked, hung, and buried. At the present time I don't have a Taylor, which means nothing since I do not have any names past Silas. No siblings, aunts, uncles, nothings except those infuriating names John Steele and Elizabeth Lair. Va to OH. But if we all are working on breaking through this wall, we just might help someone make some headway. Let me know when the fax is hooked up and I will send my stuff to you. Or when I manage to locate the right cable for my scanner I can email it. Hi, Would like to add my John Steel born either 1768 according to a grandson or 1771 as stated on Federal Census. Location of birth unknown but thought to be along present Mason Dixon Line . Married Mary Hemphill, born 1771 in Ireland in early 1790s. First child born 1795 in PA. Reference has been made to a Job, Jack, [ John ?] and Jesse Steel from " Ireland" , but so far this has been a dead end. Only family information pass down thru generations, refers to John as " from a family from over Lancaster area " Last fifty years were spent in Dunkard Township, Greene County PA. Both John and Mary were in their 90s at time of death. If any one has come across a Job or Jesse during research of PA or MD Steels. please feel free to share any item that might help us get over the "wall ." Alicemae I've been searching for years for the parents of William STEELE (b. 1774 in Augusta Co., area Va. and d. in Gallia Co., Ohio in 1851). William married Elizabeth "Betsey" HANGER (b. 1784 in Augusta Co., Va. and d. 1852 in Raccoon, Gallia Co., Ohio). They had ten children, one of which was named JOHN STEELE (b. abt. 1804 in Augusta Co., Va.) and married 22 Oct. 1834 in Gallia Co., Ohio, to Rosannah HOPSON (b. abt. 1814 in New York). I couldn't help but wonder if this could possible be your John? Elizabeth LAIR could have been a second wife maybe? Just a thought.
