James' grandparents were John and a woman by the last name of Henderson. She died soon after he was born, and John married Agnes Woodside. 3. I also have a Cap Issac Steele born in Pennsylvania in 1830. His parents were Scott and Isabella Gorrell Steele. A lot of his siblings were born in Ohio and Iowa. I have always wondered if the Cap was an actual name or just one tacked on later in life because he had been a captain ?

    3. Claudia. By my figures using Silas' birthdate of November 15, 1851, John would have been 47 at the time of Silas' birth. Not impossible by todays records, but perhaps in those days it might have been stretching. But stranger things have happened. I see he married Rosannah Hopson when he was 30, if she died early while there were young children, it would be entirely possible. I see that Gallia Co is in south east Ohio, quiite close to West Virginia which would make sense as well. But as to whether I have any more dates, I am afraid not. That is part of the troublesome equation. The information that I have, meager as it is came from Silas' Certificate of Death issued in Oklahoma. It was filed in Township of Carlile, Kay County, OK on August 1, 1933 by Mrs C.E. McCafferty, Registrar and states that Silas Wesley Steele, Male, White Married, Retired Farmer was born Nov 15, 1851 in Ohio. Father's name: John Steele born in VA. Mother's maiden name: Elizabeth Lair born in VA. Silas died on July 1st, 1933 at 81 yrs, 8 mos, 16 days. The doctors certificate states that the doctor had been with him from July 1929 until July 1, 1933 and that death occurred 7/1/33 at 2:30 am. Cause of death appaplexy(Hemiplegia - Right side) It was of 8days duration. Death was contributed to by Cardio-renal disease of 4 year duration. and signed by a Dr. M.S. White of Blackwell, OK. Place of Burial was Tonkawa IOOF Cemetery on 7/3/33 and signed by C.E. McCafferty, Undertaker. No matter how I try to squeeze more information from this old piece of paper, it just will not divulge more. And I have looked at it probably a hundred times. Do you know where in Virginia that your William Steele lived in before moving into Ohio? And would you possibly have a Melvin A. Steele somewhere in your records? I have some records of Silas recording his land patent, and on another page there is a Melvin A. Steele. It doesn't mean that there is a connection, but since they claimed close, although not next to each other, they were within a mile of each other so it is worth a good look. I am definately interested in your William Steele. It is a lead worth following. Where they may or may not be father and son, they could be from the same family. Families tended to follow each other into the new frontier. I want to tank you for responding to my message and hopefully I have found some family. I will keep my fingers crossed. Although it is hard to type that way. <grin> Alicemae ----- Original Message ----- From: "Claudia Packer" <cjpacker@earthlink.net> To: <STEELE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 09, 2001 10:20 PM Subject: Re: [STEELE] Re: [STEELE-L] Capt Samuel > Alicemae > My William STEELE had 9 children, and the oldest son was "John" b. 1804. > I'm pretty sure he was born in Virginia and I know he moved with his family > to Gallia Co., Ohio.
