My Steele ancestors were from Ireland and ( I believe ) also Scotland. My matrilineal grandmother's name was Sarah Elizabeth Wrennick. She married Berget Nathanial Steele in the late 1800's. They had a son, Willard John Steele who died during WW1 and daughters Caroline, Grace, Marion, and Dorothy. Sarah's mother was Ruth Amelia. I don't know if her last name was Wrennick or not. My gr grandfather was left a castle, in Ireland, which he declined. I think that would have been in the early 1900's. My information is far from complete as you can see. I appreciate any assistance you may be able to give me and will do likewise if I can help in any way. One thing I have been trying to find out is their port of entry into either Canada or the U.S. I have examined many ship manifests etc., but no luck so far. Laurel A.

I am so glad this information is of help. I know what kind of a brick wall you can run into with these genealogy puzzles. I will say that my step grandfather's book is so helpful. He was a very meticulous man. He will never know how many people he has helped by publishing his research. Have you gone to the McCarty message board and done a search for "Steele". I noticed a few people you might get in contact with that are also interested in your branch of the family. I can't find the name of the researcher that I heard from that was researching the Steele family, or I would send it to you. Take care! http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/ddhamm/McCarty/

I am researching the Steel(e)s of Northumberland County, New Brunswick-specifically Chatham but I have info on all Steele families in Northumberland. I also know a lot about all Steeles New Brunswick and P.E.I. and some on N.S. The name has been spelled both ways in this family although now is Steele in my line. This family line is Presbyterian and Catholic. As far as I know, this line started with John who came to N.B. in 1830. He was a Scottish labourer so I assume that is where he came from. Scottish ties seem to be throughout but my family thought they were Irish and were quite surprised to find out that wasn't true. If you can give me names and/or dates, I may be able to hook you up with someone, even if it's not me.

GIILES CO, TN. Alexander G. Steele (July 15, 1806-June 13, 1872) married Eliza Anderson (June 1, 1808- June 25, 1858) August 28, 1845. (Alexander later remarried. I do not know if there were additional children.) Their daughter Liddia Maggie Steele (1848 - ?) wrote a letter in 1866 from Corinth, TN at a girls school called the Athenaeum to her uncle, Matthew Anderson in Robertson Co, TX. It was obviously the first contact for quite some time with these family members. Definitely the first since before the Civil War. In her letter L. Maggie Steele (as she signed the letter) mentioned several items relating to family members, but she also mentioned a name that I know to be connected to a family in Greene Co, AL. I have been attempting to connect some apparently disparate Gordons and Andersons of both Giles Co, TN and Greene Co, AL for some time. Probably, these connections go back to the Upper Counties of SC beginning in the mid to late 1700's. Typically, they would have moved to that part of SC from VA. They all appear to have beeen Scots and Presbyterians, as was typical of that area. GREENE CO, AL. In Greene Co, AL another distant relative, Harriet C. Gordon (about 1829 - June 26, 1859), married in July 15, 1847 Ezekiel Baylus G. Steele (April 5, 1826 - August 4, 1855). They had four daughters, three living I think. (Elizabeth Steele, Medora Steele (Cobb), and Fannie S. Steele). Ezekiel Baylus G. Steele comes from a family with a lot of Alexanders and Abner Alexanders. His father was Alexander Steele (January 8, 1795 in SC-April 5, 1828 in Greene Co, AL) married to Jane C. McDow (April 13, 1798 - May 24, 1864). Their children were Andrew Sidney Steele, Joseph L. Steele, Margaret Steele, Elizabeth Steele, and Ezekiel Baylus G. Steele. I suspect that these Steeles are related, but I have no information of the ancestry of the Alexander G. Steele in Giles Co, TN. I am not directly related to the Steeles, but the Giles Co, TN wife of Alexander G. Steele was my gggrandfather's sister, and the Greene Co, AL wife of Ezekiel Baylus G. Steele was my gggrandmother's sister. If anyone can help me with these families/family, I would be most grateful. I might have info from my research of Gordons, Andersons, and Sims in the area that would be of use, and I am delighted to share. Thanks, Hurston Anderson
