Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YdJBAIB/1997 Message Board Post: Need information about ancestors and and descendants of Daniel B Steele. He was born 1815 in Mass. He for many years was a blacksmith. In later years he said he was a steelworker. He married Letty Margaret Winters abt 1839. She died abt 1856/58. He then married a lady named Catherine and had a second family. The children of the first marriage are: Maria m. a Mr. Gould and Alexander Francis; Letty; George; William;Abraham; Margaret;Thomas;and possible Daniel James. Daniel James could be the first born son of the second marriage. I believe that he may have died about 1892 in Paterson, New Jersey.

    2. Dennis Steele
    3. Fellow Seekers, I seek information about Samuel Steel(e), one of the many Samuels. "My" Samuel was born 1767, probably in Pennsylvania. He married a woman named Nancy, last name unknown. Nancy was born 1765, also probably in Pennsylvannia. They had a number of children: Christopher, b. 1792 in PA, married Catherine (last name unknown), and died March 23, 1872; John, b. 1796 in PA, married Mary (last name unknown), died also (?) March 23, 1872; Adam, b. 1801 in PA, married Dolla (last name unknown; an unnamed daughter b. 1801 to 1810 in PA; a son Henry, b. 1800 to 1810 in PA. They "probably" had other children. It appears they moved from PA to Malaga Township, Monroe County, Ohio between 1810 and 1830. Samuel and Nancy are believed to have died 1850 to 1860 in Ohio. I am of the line of their son John. John moved to Tazewell County, Illinois. I am looking for any information you may have about Samuel or Nancy. Secondary search is for info about Christopher, Adam, Henry, the unnamed daughter, and any other of their children. I have good info about John if you need that. I am particularly interested in Samuel's parents, possibly another Samuel Steel(e) of PA. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide. 2. Thanks to those who replied regarding the subject of paying or sharing. I appreciate your input. I can understand paying if "work" has actually been done by a professional genealogist, ie. research. I myself pay people for work I don't want/like/have time to do, even if I do know how to do it. Plumbing is a good example! If this professional is a real genealogist, then he should be getting paid for his research, not just what he is able to acquire from others by getting their gedcom file, who have actually done the work for him. 'Nuff said--I don't want to get "off topic"! Thanks again, everybody! Sherry

    3. Sara, I have never paid anyone for research up to this point, but I also have ancestors from Northern Ireland who ended up in North Carolina and I have been unsuccessful in finding them on my own for over five (5) years. I have written to folks in Northern Ireland who have my own surname and spelled the same without success. I have joined Societies in NI with out success. If you would share the name(s) of the researcher(s) you used in NI, I just think it sounds like a good idea at this point for me. I agree with Sherry, what I have gathered has been a work of joy of knowing who I am and where my ancestors came from and because of my love of history, it has been a great deal of fun, especially when I can find more than just names and dates. I also have Steele ancestors from Texas, Virginia and Georgia. At this point and time 1786 in Georgia is as far back as I can go. My paternal grandmother was a Steele. Billy McMenamy -----Original Message----- From: Sara Martha Steele [mailto:smsteele@facstaff.wisc.edu] Sent: Friday, December 28, 2001 10:14 AM To: STEELE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [STEELE] Re: Sharing or Paying Sherry of Seattle raised interesting questions. One question deals with sharing which may involve a third person and commercial use. Whenever one puts a gedcom up on a site or makes it available through a commerical genealogy website, that is what could happen. Yes, there are supposed to be rules, but it is very hard to monitor. One just has to counter balance the pros and the cons of sharing and make ones own decision. The other question deals with paying for information. Until all info is available free via computer, we are still going to have to have people search local records at locations that we can not travel to. It is appropriate to pay them. I have had wonderful help from local history and genealogy society members in the U.S. and Canada. Often they only ask for a donation to their society to help them increase their local resources. I have also employed professionals and semi-professionals and gotten help well worth the cost. I had a great professional helping me trace my great-great Steele uncles' families across Canada and have had good help from professionals in Northern Ireland and some that knew early New England and North Carolina sources very well. To me, that is the other advantage of hiring a searcher in addition to the fact that they can access local ifnormation that you can't. Good searchers are very efficient in knowing local and regional sources. In addition I access various data sources and get as much as I can on my own. I have easy access to the Wisconsin State Historical Library which has one of the top collections of geneaologies and local history books in the country as well as census from all states and many newspapers . However, when I needed material not available in the library I often found that I did not know the sources and my searcher did, saving a good deal of time. The other advantage of hiring professionals as opposed to only accepting shared information is that the professional usually documents sources. Some, amateurs like me, do not. I like the hunt rather than the taxidermy--ie, being exact on volume and page. Data that I share usually is sound but I am not guaranteeing it. However, I think that the amount you quoted is exorbitant. A minimum number of hours is typical but the total of about $600 is not usual unless prices have gone up a lot. One other comment. Digging for information is a kind of activity that some of us who like puzzles and detail enjoy and others do not. A high powered business man, for example, is used to paying other people to do the digging. He or she doesn't have time or interest to deal with the bits and pieces but wants the end result. 2. Frank Sullivan, Jr.
    3. Sherry, Two things: 1. I have an "Ash" family that shows up in my Steele line. My line is from SC>TN>AR>OK. If there is any possible connection get back to me and I can be more specific. 2. Some people don't have the time or the resources to do family research. Yet it is something they desperately want to discover. So, they hire people to do the work for them. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you have a willing buyer and a willing seller. You, like myself, are not in the money making genealogy business. I admire your willingness to share your hard work with any family member and understand your reluctance to share it with entrepreneurs, but, if a paid researcher takes their time to research a family, in which they have no personal interest, then they should be compensated. And, if, in the mean time, they take your work and help other people find their family then what is the harm? Good luck. Frank Sullivan, Jr. (My mother is Erleen Steele - we are very proud of our Steele line) Steel75642@aol.com wrote: > > Anyone know of a connection between someone name "Ash", who would have a > connection to a Steele family? 3. I think I replied to your message before but have not heard back. I am sure we are talking of the same Peter Etzcorn. The Mary Steele he married was the dau. of James Monroe and Artemetia Steele. She was born in Iowa after her father returned from the Civil War. They moved to Mich. in 1872. She attended school in Kalkaska County. She married Will Ives and had two children, Will and Mae. Will died of a heart attack when he was fairly young. Mary was married to Pete for about ten years before his death. They had no children. Mary was a very active and well liked person who seemed to always being helping one branch of the family or another whenever there was illness or babies being born. I have lots of info. about the family but not sure what you are interested in. Her son Will became a teacher, married had three children before his wife left. The kids had a rough life living with one relative after another. Will remarried but the new wife didn't want to raise the children. Mary's dau. Mae married and had a large family. Her married name was Philo. She died of TB when the children were still young. 2. Anyone know of a connection between someone name "Ash", who would have a connection to a Steele family? I responded to a post from someone, who apparently has connections to my Steele family, and it turns out the posting was done by a third party, hired by this person, to find his Steele family connections. The "client" has paid a tremendous amount of money to this firm to do his genealogy ($60/hour--10 hour minimum), all of which he could do himself IF he had a computer (which he doesn't)! I would gladly share my information directly with this person, but I am more than a little reluctant for him to have to pay so much money to have someone else get it for him. I am also not comfortable with the idea of this third party having my "stuff". I'm not willing for my "relative" to pay so much money for the information, and the third party get it for free from me! My work has a value, too, especially for independent third party "professionals", who in turn sell it to my family! 1. [STEELE] [longish post] Steele Family of Vinton County Reunion, Ash Cave State Park, Ohio – 1951 – 1967
    2. John A. Evans - N0HJ
    3. Subject: Steele Family of Vinton County Reunion, Ash Cave State Park, Ohio – 1951 – 1967. Greetings, How about a late Christmas present for you all? Here are the named entries from my grandmother’s Steele Family Reunion Ledger, covering the years 1951 thru 1967. The reunions were held at Ash Cave State Park for Steele Family members and friends and many of the family originated in the Vinton County area of Ohio. No attempt was made to correct typographical errors. Also, no assumptions were made about attendees – individuals could be family, friends or guests. In the interest of keeping this post as short as possible but useful as well, I have extracted the attendance list names, deleted any address information, and left the names in the order they appear within the journal (earliest years first). I have transcribed the ledger as well as scanned it and can provide the complete transcription or scans to those with family connections to any attendees here. It is my hope that this list of surnames will help someone make connections to and from their ancestors and perhaps even be able to contact living descendants from this data. PAGE 111 ALFRED STEEL, president of the Stutsman County Abstract & Guarantee Company, is a business man and citizen who has played a varied role in the affairs of the territory and state during the past forty years. He is a member of the State Senate and has served in the Senate almost consecutively for twenty years. Senator Steel was born at Genesee, [Waukesha County], Wisconsin, August 1, 1860, and was educated in Wisconsin public schools and graduated with the A. B. degree from Beloit College in 1880. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1883, and in the same year came to Dakota Territory and established his home at Jamestown [Stutsman County]. He has carried some practice as a lawyer but his chief interest for over forty years has been in the abstract and insurance business, representing one of the oldest organizations of the kind in the state. Senator Steel has always been a staunch Republican. He has served as alderman, twice as mayor of Jamestown, and for some years was a member of the board of County Commissioners and for twenty-eight years a member of the Jamestown Board of Education. He was elected a member of the State Senate for the session of 1909 and has served in every subsequent session with the exception of those of 1917-19. Senator Steel is a member of all the branches of York Rite Masonry, including El Zagal Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Fargo, and the B. P. 0. Elks and Rotary Club. He married in 1886 Miss Agnes J. Calvert, of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Steel have one son, T. Douglas Steel, born August 26, 1892. This son graduated from the Jamestown High School and from the University of North Dakota in 1914. In 1918 he joined the navy and was Put on duty in the Canal Zone and was not granted an honorable discharge until September, 1921. After being released from active duty he returned to North Dakota and has since been associated with his father in the abstract and insurance business. He is a York Rite Mason and Shriner, member of the B. P. 0. Elks and American Legion, the Kiwanis Club and the Presbyterian Church. The son is unmarried.[1931]
