    3. Joyce, I have alittle while before i have to get supper ready, so i am jotting a quick note! :) > All i know is that my granddad was > William Oscar Steele and i > think that his parents were Taylor Steele and Mary Merrith Bostick Steele ? Yes, Taylor and Mary were his parents.....though I think Taylor's first name was William too...but don't quote me on that; I don't have my info. in front of me, to see for sure. I didn't know that Wiliam's mother's last name was so long....which one did she go by? I have only heard of Merrith as her last name! :) And from what I have heard and read, that "William" was a name that was carrried down thru the line, but he could gone by "Oscar", too...sometimes people did that....dropped the first name and went by the middle, or so I am told. > He was married 2 times before my > grandmother Verna Pearl Duke Steele they lived in Estill Springs Tenn and he had a service Station and he and Verna had 6 children ,,,,,,,,, What are the children's names? Because I know of a Pearl who is the grandmother to a Diana(Steele) Gearhart, that I have talked to before; that would make her a cousin or something, I think.(Not sure though! :)) This is so EXCITING! I seem to have made a "break-thru", FINALLY! Any other info. you may have, would would helpful, too. I will look up my info. and get back to you, ok? I am so excited! :) You have been a BIG help! :) Thanks! :) Talk to you, soon! :) laurie ;) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! While your'e looking, they were supposed to come from Beaver something, like Beaver Township, Beaver Falls, Beaver something ! To make it worse, I don't think his real name was Scott. I have seen Scott listed on many censuses for him and even his burial record says Scott, but I have also seen reference to the name Scott or Scotty, as he was sometimes called, being a nickname due to a brough he had. And it gets worse. His wife, Isabella Gorrell, well, her last name is debatable. Some say is Gobel, Guren. She is the one I have been focusing on due to her name. Scott Steele may be plentiful, but Isabella Gorrell/Gobel/Gurel may be more rare ! That I can find, they were in Ohio, Illinois and Iowa. Jack Childers in OKC

It's funny you should mention Alexander Steele because that is the name I'm stuck at right now. I have an 1850 index list of Steele which I've been going through looking for a match for me. I might have a match with an Alexander. He is from Alleganey county and Alleganey ward but there are 4-5 wards and the index doesn't give the ward. I see two Alexander Steels from 1850 index also, but they have no E on the end. They are located in Lawrence county . One is in Pulaski Twp and the other in North Be.... something. Are they your people? Chuck

She married Eugene Pyett DeHaven in Philadelphia, PA in 1863 and participated in the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876. I have several photos of her, including one in costume as Martha Washington for the Centennial. I have some photos labeled Steel and one labeled Andrew Steel, but there is some question as to whether my relative got the names right. Any further info on this family would be wonderful. I know Eugene's father had a shoe shop in Philadelphia, and Eugene pretty much gambled away the family's money by betting on horses. Does anyone recognize this family?
