Dear Stearns-L members, I am a brand new member of the list, and have two names in my family that I would like to submit for your consideration. The first is Phoebe Stearns. Her name has also been listed elsewhere as Pheba and Phebe Stearns. She was a native of Massachusetts and was married to my great-great-great grandfather, Joshua Armstrong. Phoebe was born in 1797 and died Jan 21, 1885. She is buried in Waldo Township, Cemetery in Waldo, Marion County, Ohio. She is buried next to her husband who was from England. Joshua was born in about 1785 and came to the U.S. in 1803. He settled in Monroe County, New York, and fought in the war of 1812. Phoebe and Joshua came to Ohio in about 1820 or 1821. In Waldo, Joshua was listed in the census as an innkeeper and apparently owned the Armstrong Hotel. Phoebe and Joshua and several children including a daughter, Clarinda, who married Philander K. Francis. Mr. Francis was a prominant citizen of Waldo, Ohio, and was a two term mayor. His parents were Levi and Hanna (Stearns) Francis. Hanna Stearns was from Newport R.I. and I feel certain that she was related in some way to Phoebe (Stearns) Armstrong.
