    2. Trying to find out any information on Joseph Starn and his descendents. He was born in Maryland in 1757. He finally ended up in Virginia, married and landed in Adams County Ohio to raise his family. I am especially interested in information on his son Joseph or any other relations.

    1. NC Mountain Starnes'
    2. Bill Starnes
    3. Although my paternal Starnes line comes from the flatlands of Union Co, NC, down near Charlotte, I've found a connection on my maternal side to the high country Starnes' of the NC mountains. Just outside Asheville, NC, in Buncombe Co, is an area called Starnes' Cove. Never been there but I recall seeing it listed on some of the buses running near my aunt's house in West Asheville when I was a kid. Does anyone have an info on the mountain Starnes line? My maternal ggf married a Glenn who was the daughter of a Starnes. Thanks. Bill

    3. The information below came from the Van Wagenen book about Isaac Stearns and his descendants. I can't quite figure out (in the book) who the parents of Daniel Stearns (died 1867) were. If anyone can give me his parents names, I'll try to locate them in the book and post the line to the list. Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me! 3. I found a Samuel Cushman, who was born in Portsmouth, N.H. on June 8, 1783. He died in Portsmouth on May 20, 1851. Does anyone know if this is the Samuel Cushman who married Betsey Stearns? Betsey was born December 13, 1793, daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Whittier) Stearns. Betsey was probably born in the northeast, possibly in Massachusetts. The time frame certainly fits. 1. Stearns, Charles - 1814
    2. Jeanne Hayes
    3. According to the Van Wagenen book about Isaac Stearns . . . (page 517) Charles Stearns, born Mar. 15, 1814, son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Heywood) Stearns, of Vermont; married March 1845, Elvira Statira Jones, daughter of Alexander and Louisa Jones, of Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., N. Y. According to the Bond book on Watertown, Massachusetts . . . . (page 513) Charles Stearns, born in Brattleboro, Vt., Mar. 15, 1814; married March 1845, in Jamestown, Chatauque Co., N.Y., Elvira Statira, daughter of Ellie and Louisa Jones of Jamestown, Chatauque Co., N.Y. Can anyone tell me which of these is correct? It seems that the Van Wagenen would be more likely to be correct . The Bond entry doesn't have Elvira as having the same last name as her parents. So . . . is it Elvira Statira or Elvira Statira Jones? And is her father Ellie Jones or Alexander Jones? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Jeanne Hayes email: j-hayes@mindspring.com

In a message dated 97-08-15 00:52:59 EDT, you write: << Thanks for any help that anyone can give me >> Sometimes you can just rename it, putting the extension as .ged You would need to make sure all the extra "email stuff" is stripped off though. So, you could also cut and paste into a wp file and save it as .ged. Those might work.... Peggy Sue

This caused the gedcom to arrive as a LARGE text file. Does anybody know if there is a way that I can convert it back to a gedcom file, and not a text file?? Thanks for any help that anyone can give me. Jeanne email: j-hayes@mindspring.com

    1. Statira
    2. This name is used "excessively" as a middle name in my McClellan/McKinley lineages in NC. I have a missing Starnes female down that way too, so I thought I'd put my two cents worth in. Martha Starnes b. ca 1839 in NC m. in 1854 to Eli Linker b. ca 1829 in NC. Eli died in the Civil War and it is believe Martha Starnes Linker married Calvin Allman in Sept 1864 dying a short time later as Calvin marries again. I'd love hearing about the name "Statira" if you figure anything out, and of course anything on a Martha born about 1839 give a few years... don't think she could be any younger. 2. Chet Swanson
    3. This list (see to address) has made a significant change to how messages have been posted. Because we have been "found" by some unscrupulous members of the Internet and Genealogy community I have been forced to have RootsWeb restrict posting to this list. Effective immediately only subscribed members of the list may send a message to the list address. There will be one exception to this, people who are not members who can convince me to let them post to the list will be allowed to do so. But I want to protect members of the list from "spammers" so I am having to take this step. Sorry for the change, I hope it doesn't seriously affect list members. 1. Re: Shubael Stearns
    2. Bill & Gayle, there is a real disconnect here. The predominant theory is that if there really was a Shubael Stearns, father of Charles and Nathaniel, then he died in the Boston/Watertown/Cambridge area shortly after his arrival (ca. 1631. There are 3 different schools of thought relative to his lineage - those like me who think the legend is too strong to be untrue, but only know that he must have been related to Isaac Stearns, and can't definitively place him in the offspring of William and Emma. Then there are those who believe he was Isaac's brother and place him as a son of William and Emma. Then there is the Threlfall school, who apparently accept a recent work by John B. Threlfall, and that would indicate an entirely different lineage for Charles and Isaac, I believe. I don't have the work or its title, but perhaps we could coax Barb Petty, who apparently has the book, to chime in on this one. We had anticipated a debate when she brought out this info earlier this year, but the list members just didn't get involved. I think that the Threlfall theory ignores the existence of Shubael or Daniel, alleged brothers of Isaac, and Nathaniel, likely Charles places Charles as the son of Charles STERNE and Martha HASALL/LASALL and that this Charles was the older brother of Isaac, and a son of Thomas STERNE and Dorothy PLAMPIN. Whatever the case, I think you need to modify your estimate for the death of Shubael (to ca. 1631) if you accept him as Charles' father.
