Another Stearns cousin asked about the line from Isaac to T. S. Eliot. I'm posting it for the whole group. Here's more of the ancestry of T.S. Eliot. Yesterday I posted an outline going back several generations . This outline continues back where yesterdays' left off.. Most of the information came from Bond's book ( about Watertown, Massachusetts), Van Wagenen's book (about Isaac Stearns), and W. E. Stearns book (about Isaac Stearns also). Well, it looks like I can answer my own question. I checked in the Van Wagenen book (the Isaac Stearns one) and found the ancestry of T. S. Eliot. I just learned today that the full name of the poet T. S . Eliot is "Thomas Stearns Eliot". According to the encyclopedia, . . . he was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Sept. 26, 1888 and died on Jan. 4, 1965. The encyclopedia also says "Eliot was descended form a distinguished New England family." Knowing how many children are given their mother's maided name as a middle name, I'm wondering if that's the case here. Does anyone have T. S. Eliot in their Stearns line?? If so, would you be willing to share some of his lineage with the rest of us?? Jeanne email : j-hayes@mindspring.com
Dear all, In the 1820 census, taken in Jackson Twp, Champaign Co., OH, I have found one Issaac Starns. The entry lists 2 males under 10 years 1 male 10 - 16 1 male 26 - 45 (Probably Issaac) 3 females under 10 years 1 female 10 - 16 1 female 26 - 45 Does anyone have any connection to this family? I have further questions if you do. Sincerely, Robert E. Armstrong Houston, TX
One of our list members was kind enough to remind me that part of the problem with attachments is long messages. Two things sometimes happen with long messages that can cause problems. First, some email programs will automatically take a long message and convert it to an attachment. And some Internet service providers, commercial and other, will either reject a long message (Juno does this or used to do this), or convert the message to an attachment (AOL used to do this, maybe still does). The welcome messages for these lists is supposed to mention the problems with long messages and attachments. Since it may have been a while since you signed onto the list, I'll briefly emphasize both issues. 1) Long messages: If you have information which is going to make for a long message (more than a few pages or about 15KB of data) you have two options. One is to break the long message down into several parts so that no one part is too long for anyone. The other option is to send out a short message with a brief synopsis of what information you have, and invite people to contact you by PRIVATE email to request the information be sent to them by PRIVATE email. 2) Attachments: If you have information that you want to send as an attachment, DO NOT send it to the list. Send out a short message with a brief synopsis of the information you have, and invite people to contact you by PRIVATE email to request the information be sent to them by PRIVATE email. Thanks for your consideration. Good hunting. Hi Everyone, Just a reminder to all subscribers to the lists I manage on RootsWeb. DO NOT send attachments to the list address. If you have something that requires attachments and it might be of general interest, post a short note to the list and ask people to let you know if they want the information. Then send them the attachment by private email. There are still some email programs out there that get totally messed up with attachments. This is one of my very few hard and fast rules, NO attachments to the list. I will remove offenders from the list without notice for sending attachments to the list addresses! I'd be interested in getting a few generations of information on John's descendants through his children other than Sheldon. Welcome to the month of October, 1997. Certainly seems that this year has been going by way too fast. If you are subscribed to more than one list that I manage you are getting this message once for each list. Sorry for the repeats, but it's just an easier way for me to do things. I am trying to serve two purposes with this message. First, I want to make sure you all realize this list is still around since none of these lists I manage is very active. Second, I want offer some reminders. Keep in mind that the lists are currently set up so that you have to be a subscriber to submit a message to the list. If you refer someone to the list remind them that they need to subscribe or contact me before they try to send a message to the list. As I mentioned above, none of these lists is very active so don't be worried when you don't get mail daily, or even weekly from the lists to which you are subscribed. Although I haven't been real active lately I'd still like to see some more research on these lists. So, how about everything think about the person you're having the most trouble with, on one of these lists and sending out a query for data. I'll see what I can come up with in my own searching to get it started in the next few days. That's enough for the time being. I hope everyone is having success this year in their genealogical searching. Take care, post often, best wishes for the rest of the year. Updating my message from a few weeks ago, the corrected URL for my on-line descendancy and ancestry reports is: http://www.premier1.net/~swanson This will lead you to my personal home page table of contents and then you can follow it to my family history/genealogy page. The sites linked to from this page give a good general idea of the names which I have in my database. Two of the sites take either my ancestry or my wife's ancestry back as far as we have information for. The other two sites take one of my g-g-grandfather's lines and one of my wife's g-g-grandfather's lines down to the current generations. The information is the same as was on the sites at the time of my earlier message, so if you didn't find anything interesting at that time, there is no need to check out the sites this time. Most information on persons still living is suppressed so if you do find a family you are interested you may need to contact me for more information. Take care, good hunting. I have recently placed the genealogy data for my family, and Delores' family on the Palladium web site. The addresses for the web pages on shown in my signature block below. (The major families covered are the descendants of Sheldon & Mary Stearns (my side) and Holon & Matilda Godfrey (Delores' side). This includes a lot of side lines, so you may want to take a quick look for information. A couple of caveats; (1) personal data is shown only on those who I am sure are dead, others are mentioned without personal data, and (2) information is not guaranteed, use the information only as a starting point for your own research. Remember, I am not currently active in genealogy. So, I am not doing active research at this time. If you do have questions, there may be lengthy delays before I respond if I do respond. Good luck in your search for information. Re the posting about Shubael Stearns, This story is told in scattered sources elsewhere, too. I have additional information about the Stearns/Marshall/Paulk in-laws and the circumstances of the migration. Note that the common link appears to be marriage to a Stearns sister, and that these womens' sons and grandsons carried on what can safely be called a family ministerial tradition. There is no single source which puts everything together, which I am trying to do from the standpoint of family influence and memory. I note here that back in New England, other Marshalls related to Daniel became traveling ministers and other Paulks and their descendants became Baptist and Methodist ministers. FYI, Daniel Marshall was one of the few ministers who remained in the backcountry during the Revolution to minister, which may have been another reason the Baptists were so enthusiastically supported. Please note that I have copied this from a posting to Rowan Co., NC mailing list... I don't know who sent it except email address: caldw@ix.netcom.com Subj: SANDY CREEK CHURCH Date: 97-09-08 00:47:27 EDT From: caldw@ix.netcom.com Resent-from: ROWANROOTS-L@rootsweb.com The first meetings in which an attempt was made to organize the Regulator Movement took place in 1766 at Sandy Creek Baptist Church in what is now northern Randolph County, North Carolina. Salling's store where Regulator petitions were signed was only a few miles to the east of this church, which, according to a state historical marker in front of the present building, is the "mother church of the Southern Baptist Church." It was founded in 1755 By Shubal Stearns (1706-1771)a former member of the Congregational Church, Boston born, who left Connecticut with a few followers. In this venture he was joined by Daniel Marshall who had married Shubal's sister Martha in 1748. It was Daniel Marshall who later went to Georgia to found the Baptist Church in that colony. Daniel Marshall would seem to have come south first but if he did he was soon followed by Stearns. It was at mid-year in 1755 when this group from New England arrived at Sandy Creek in what was then Orange County. They erected a log church on land donated for the purpose by Semore York, a recent immigrant from Maryland. Initially the church consisted of only some sixteen members. These sixteen were Shubal Stearns and his wife, Daniel Breed and his wife, Enos Stinson and his wife, Shubal Stearns Jr. and his wife, Ebenezer Stearns and wife, and Jonathan Polk and his wife. Shubal Stearns was chosen pastor while Daniel Marshall and Joseph Breed were chosen Elders or assistants. Sandy Creek Church was from the beginning a "New Light" Separatist Baptist Church. "Sandy Creek was a church under the spell of Shubal Stearns. Stearns' preaching affected the bodies of people as well as their emotions. Fear, trembling, shouting, weeping, and rejoicing was the spiritual vogue of the Separate Baptists. Much noise and great confusion often prevailed. With a strong, musical voice Stearns had a captivating effect on his hearers. Biblical preaching and fervant pleasding left no room for guessing about the preacher's intention. He wanted a verdict!" (Bowman, STEARNS AND COMPANY, A MUSICAL SAGA, 1975, Nashville, TN: The Broadman Press) Stearns sought a literal interpretation of what he perceived as the offices and rituals found in the New Testament. Thus they celebrated Baptism, Lord's supper, love feast, laying on of hands, foot washing, anointing the sick, right hand of fellowship, kiss of charity, and devotion of children. It was the custom to observe communion on each Sunday if the necessary elements could be procured. "Separate Baptist ministers, formally untrained and refusing to accept pay for dispensing the gospel, fanned out from Sandy Creek to tell the story. By 1779 Separate Baptists had churches as far west as the Mississippi River, southwest to Georgia, eastward toward the Chesapeake Bay, and northward toward the waters of the Potomac......Southern Baptists would be a different people if Separate Baptists had not brought the fire of the Great Awakening to Sandy Creek, North Carolina." (Ibid) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------- When Shubal Stearns died in 1771 Semore York was one of the executors of the will. Semore is buried in the churchyard at Sandy Creek. At one time, less than 20 years ago he had a tiny monument faint but legible. Now that monument is not to be found. Semore York is my 6th great grandfather. And after the part he and his associate Stearns had in the formation of the Baptist Church I am not even a Baptist! Here is an abstract of Shubal Stearns' will. GUILFORD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA a:0327 - WILL OF SHUBAL STEARNS - 24 Oct 1771 BROTHER: Isaac Stearns, "my wearing clothes, inside and out" WIFE: Sarah, "all my estate during her life." BROTHERS: Peter Starns (sic), Isaac Starns (sic),Ebenezer Starns (sic). SISTERS: Rebecca Polk, Elizabeth Tomson, Martha Marshall To brothers and sisters "estate after death of wife" EXORS: Seymore York, Tidmore Land WITS: Thoms Swift, Jeremiah York, Sarah Cunerood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------- I decided to post this because of the great importance that Sandy Creek Church had, and still has, really nationwide. It also was involved with the Regulator movement and was one of the targets of Governor Tryon when he came west. caldw@ix.netcom.com
Hi, My name is also spelled Sterne and I have found it spelled this way until around 1870s, but prior found it spelled Stern (even with the same person!!), Sterns and Starn. My family is from Adams County Ohio area but lived in Virginia in the late 1700s to early 1800s. If you would like more information or have a specific question you can also email me at: Deidre40@aol.com. Dee
I've recently added my e-mail address to your mailing list. So far all the discussions I've seen have concerned surnames containing the letter "a"--(Starnes as well as Stearns) as your address clearly indicated they would. Although the dates involved in the questions I've seen submitted are close to the years I find connected with my Grandmother's family, I had hoped that the similarity in spelling would produce her name, STERNE, but unfortunately that has not been the case as yet. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any connection with family members who use this spelling as in: Charles L Sterne (born approx. 1859 who married in approx. 1879) who raised his family in or around Petersburg, Va.
