    3. Dear Jeanne, Thank you for the information and please excuse my tardy reply. This is certainly the same family. I have some additional but sometimes differing data. On Sun, 10 Aug 1997, Jeanne Hayes wrote: > According to the Van Wagenen book : > Warren Stearns is the son of Daniel and Phoebe Ann (Rounds) Stearns. Daniel (aged 61; b. NY) & Phebe (aged 57; b. My gr-aunt remembered "Aunt Georgiana" married to a FOGG; in 1870 census there is a Georgianna FOGG (age 28 = b.1842) and Caleb FOGG (age 59) with children Duane & Cora FOGG and George & Edwin WILSON. > John - born in 1845, died in 1885. > James - born and died in 1849. My gr-aunt remembered Aunt Elta/Eltsie who was married to Uncle Ferd. But it was my gr-gr-grandmother Katherine STEARNS (b. 1863; d.1887), Warren and Lorana STEARNS' 9th & last child, who married John W. MILLER (b. 1855; d.1913). They are buried in the Dugway Cemetery, Albion, Oswego Co., NY. > I have more information about the Stearns line preceding Warren A. Stearns, > that is . . his parents, grandparents, etc. Please ask if you need more > information. I would like any further informtion you have on this family. My gr-aunt said that this family went back to Isaac STEARNS who came over on the "Arabella" in 1630. I would also be happy to send you more complete data from my research, if you wish. Thanks very much for your reply, and once again please excuse my delayed response. **************************************************************** Edward J. 3. Martha Starnes b. ca 1839 in NC married in 1854 to Eli Linker b. ca 1829 in Cabarrus Co., NC. d. 1863 during Civil War. Several of Eli & Martha Starnes Linker's descendants have tried to find Martha's parents. She may also have married Calvin ALLMAN after Eli's death in 1863 (and possibly died in childbirth of a daughter MJ Allman listed in 1870 census.) This daughter, MJ Allman, presumed to be that of Martha Linker Allman was in the Adam Starnes household in this 1870 along with Calvin who had by then married LYDIA STARNES dau of Adam, but NOT a sister to Martha. What relationship, if any, exists between Adam Starnes and Martha is unknown at this time. Adam Starnes ancestry is also a mystery -- his wife was Mary Elizabeth FINK. In 1850 Cabarrus Co Census there is also a Martha Starnes 16 living in the home of Martin Widenhouse, and another age 15 living in the home of Henry Bangles. Either of these "could be" our Martha, however the 1860 census shows Martha Starnes Linker's age to be 20. ANY help with these mysteries would be greatly appreciated! 3. Here's what I have about the Stearns and Wait connection. The information came from both Bond's book about Watertown, Mass. and Van Wagenen's book about Isaac Stearns. Basically, it states that Lydia Stearns married Elijah Smith and one of their children (Susan Smith) married a Nathan W. Wait. So, the connection seems to be an in-law one. 3. Just a reminder to anyone subscribed to the BEERS, GODFREY, KERN, MONROE, RICHMOND, SPICER, STEARNS or TINGLEY lists here on RootsWeb. These lists are not very high volume lists. It is not uncommon for there to be several days, or even longer, between messages on these lists. Just because you are not getting regular messages DOES NOT mean that you are no longer subscribed to the list. DO NOT try to subscribe to your list again just because you don't think you're getting enough mail. All that does is generate error messages which come to me and then I have to work out any problems. I get enough error messages without any extra help. If you think you might have somehow been dropped from the list try sending the list a message (the list not the command address). Pick one of your ancestors that you want some information on, and send a request to the list for help. If you aren't on the list, you should get a reject message since all of these lists are now restricted to posts by subscribers only. If you are still on the list, you should shortly get a copy of your message as it is received by the whole list. If you still can't figure it out, send me a private message at swanson@premier1.net and I'll find out if you're still subscribed and let you know. Thank you for your consideration. 3. Just a reminder message for anyone on the BEERS, GODFREY, KERN, MONROE, RICHMOND, SPICER, STEARNS or TINGLEY surnames lists which I manage on the RootsWeb server. Messages for the list go to one address, commands, e.g. unsubscribe to a different address, and messages to me specifically go to an entirely different address! A lot of our newer members have been sending their messages to the command list. When that happens the server at RootsWeb forwards the message to me because it doesn't recognize the command. Then I have to waste time trying to figure out what is happening. The following examples show how to properly address messages for commands, inquiries to the list, and messages to me. All you need to change is change the word "surname" to the proper name for the list you are concerned with. Commands go to: suname-l-request@rootsweb.com Messages go to: surname-l@rootsweb.com (<-- note the word request is gone) Messages to me go to: swanson@premier1.net I appreciate your help in this matter. This is becoming a serious problem as a lot of messages are coming to me instead of to the lists in general. -- Chet Swanson Everett, WA mailto:swanson@premier1.net http://www.premier1.net/~swanson/index.htm "Back up my hard drive? "My" Phebe was the wife of Samuel Stearns, born Jan 11, 1668 and died Nov 19, 1721. The Waite and the Stearns lines goes way back. I have Samuel listed as being from Cambridge, Mass. and Phebe born in Watertown or Lexington, Mass. and dieing in Littletown, Mass. ________________________ looking for help with Denison Stearns. In one of your recent post I see mention of Phebe Wait(e). I have a Wait also but no further information on Clarrissa, except that she and Denison were married 20 Jan 1828 in Huron OH. He died 23 Jan 1875. ________________________________________ I found two Phoebe Stearns'. One born to Samuel Stearns and Pheobe Waite in 1706...I have her married name as Cummings. 1. Re: Alonzo Brigham Stearns
    2. I am descended from Alonzo Brigham Stearns, who was born in Worcester County Mass. April 17, 1824. He married Antoinette Marie Calkins Stearns June 30, 1852. A family story told to my Mother has it that Alonzo always told every one about his rich cousin in CA., "Don" Abel Stearns. When Abel's widow Arcadia died about 1912 with no children and no will, my great-great grandmother Stearns hired a lawyer in an attempt to claim part of the estate (a lot of land, mostly). But no birth records or Bibles existed so nothing could be proven. The estate mostly went to Arcadia's sister Ysidora Bandini de Couts and her children in San Diego County. Having grown up in Orange County and on Don Abel's former ranch (Rancho Los Coyotes) I have always been interested in this line and have always wanted to know the exact relationship of Alonzo Brigham and Abel Stearns. Alonzo's father was Asa born June 7, 1788 in Winchendon MA. Asa married Mary Temple. I noted on the recently sent T.S. Elliot e-mail that there was a William Alonzo Stearns born in 1821 and that his brother? Thomas married a Brigham. With this similarity in birth dates and names I feel that Alonzo Brigham Stearns and this William Alonzo are closely related. If anyone can help me here I will greatly appreciate it and if anyone has any detailed biographical information on "Don" Abel Stearns I would like to hear from you. Thank you, Tom Stinson

    2. Hello Cousins: I am descended through Isaac, Samuel, Nathaniel, Daniel, Isaiah, Daniel, Charles, Charles W., Frank Edson, and Howard Sr. I am presently having trouble finding information about Elizabeth, wife of Isaiah. I think she was a descendant of the Durant family and her parents were Edward Durant and Judith Waldo. Elizabeth Durant was born on 28, Jan 1728. All the information I have on the wedding of Isaiah and Elizabeth is that she is Elizabeth Stearns or Widow Stearns. The IGI micro fiche files indicate that an Elizabeth Durant married Isaiah Stearns and in 1775 seven years after he died she married Edward Fillibrown. The Waldo genealogy indicates that an Elizabeth Durant die in 1798 ----unmarried. What a revoltin' developement. Can anyone shed some light? Thank you, Howard Stearns HSTEA1803

    3. I received this email and was unable to help. I checked all of my CDs and books, but struck out, unfortunately. Can anyone help ?? Jeanne Return-Path: <bob-nita@neosoft.com> >Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 09:59:13 -0500 >From: "Robert E.Armstrong" <bob-nita@neosoft.com> >Reply-To: bob-nita@neosoft.com >To: j-hayes@mindspring.com >Subject: Phebe Stearns/Phebe Wait > >Dear Jeanne, >I have a possible connection to this Stearns line which I would like to >explore. > >I have known for some time that my gggGrandfather, Joshua Armstrong, was >married to a woman named Phebe Stearns. All I knew about her was that >she was from Massachusetts. This Phebe is buried next to Joshua in the >Waldo Cemetery in Waldo, Ohio. She is listed on the same stone with >Joshua. She was born about Apr 8, 1796 and died Mar 12, 1885. > >I also know that Joshua and Phebe's daughter, Clarinda, married Mr. P. >K. Francis of Chenango Co., N. Y. and that P. K.'s mother was Hannah >Stearns, from Newport, RI. (I suspected that Phebe and Hannah were >related.) > >To add to this I recently discovered that on the 1820 federal census for >Champaign Co. OH, (p. 510), directly below Joshua Armstrong's listing, >was a listing for Phebe Wait. And directly below that was a listing for >Isaac Starnes. I was puzzled by the fact that Joshua's entry listed >several children, but no female in the same age catigory as Joshua. In >otherwords, no wife. [This concerned me because three other later census >entries show that Joshua and Phebe were only a year apart in age.] I >noted that in the Phebe Wait entry there were two women, one older than >45, and one between 26 and 45. However, there was no adult male entry. > >The Isaac Starnes entry showed a large family. > >Through another researcher I contacted Ms. Frances Eisan in Hanover, IN >who has written a book on the Isaac Stearns family. I called her, and >she is sending me a copy of that book. I note that you refer to another >book by Van Wagenen. (Is that book generally available?) > >I guess my second question is, is there any chance that the Phebe >Stearns who married my gggGrandfather is part of the Stearns line in >either book, and who is Phebe Wait? I see her name in one of your >postings. I am hoping that a connection here will lead to information >about where Joshua Armstrong entered the U. S. and possibly, who his >parents were. > >I know this posting is rather disjointed, but I would like to hear from >you on this subject. > >Sincerely, >R. E. Armstrong >Houston, TX > >
