    1. Thanksgiving! Beatitudes of a Family Genealogist
    2. Susan Bradford
    3. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Beatitudes of a Family Genealogist Blessed are the great grandmothers, who hoarded newspaper clippings and old letters, For they tell the story of their time. Blessed are all the grandfathers who filed every legal document For this provides proof. Blessed are grandmothers who preserved family Bibles and diaries, For this is our heritage. Blessed are fathers who elect officials that answer letters of inquiry, For — some — they are the only link to the past. Blessed are mothers who relate family traditions and legends to the family, For one of her children will surely remember. Blessed are the relatives who fill in family sheets with extra data, For them we owe the family history. Blessed is any family whose members strive for the preservation of records, For theirs is a labour of love. Blessed are the children who will never say, "Grandma, you have told that old story twice today." 2. Martha
    3. You found her. I'm Martha Stearns. But...I'll be darned if I can find out who my relatives were. Again...my Dad was Oliver Benton Stearns II, so my Grandfather was Oliver Benton Stearns I, who apparently hung himself in the Cheyenne, WY jail. He is buried in Cheyenne. He was married to Margaret Louise Stearns who is buried in Missoula, Montana. If anyone can tell me anything more..let me know, please! :) Thanks! 2. Bryan Duchesne
    3. Hello fellow Stearns rooters... Just a quick note to let you know that we have published the line of Charles Stearns as we have it. We spent painstaking time entering all the Stearns data into our database but what you see is not all of it. It would have been too large to publish - over 5300 individuals. We have only included the direct line back from Gwen's father. If any one would like a copy of the GEDCOM, let us know. What we have is mainly transcribed from Van Wagenen's book with some added research of our own to complete the line down. Chet (and all others who need this), Below is a five generation outline of John B. Stearns and his children. I can send you more if you need it. Most of the information came from the Bond book, the Van Wagenen book (about Isaac Stearns) , and Willard E. Stearns book about Isaac Stearns. Some of these sources had conflicting dates. I put the conflicting information on my "Notes" page and merely chose one of the stated dates to put in my file. Please let me know if you find any discrepancies with your information. I got it from Stemmons Publishing in Utah. They advertise in the GENEALOGICAL HELPER but I no longer keep any of my copies of that magazine and don't subscribe any longer. So I can't help you with an address or phone number. The copy I got was copied from an original in a compressed (2 pages on each page) format and plastic comb bound. It's not a high quality book, but for around $30.00 it sure beats the copy from Tuttle. Another thing, the version that Stemmons sells is now the edition most recent edition of the book, so it is missing most of what would be volume II (as I recall from discussions a year or so ago). You may want to try to get their address or phone number and check with them on the availability of the book. chet -- Chet Swanson Everett, WA mailto:swanson@premier1.net http://www.premier1.net/~swanson/index.htm "Don't be irreplaceable, if you can't be replaced, you can't be promoted, Dilbert's Laws of Work" copyright 1997, Chester Swanson, all rights reserved

    3. For your information I got this response from NEHGS about Bond's Watertown book. I was under the impression (as of a couple of years ago) that they were the source for the "authorized/current" available copy. I'd be interested in hearing from others as to their sources for the various books. I have purchased my Stearns books (and others) through an online book store called Willow Bend Books. You can use a search engine to locate the many online books stores that sell genealogy . Or if you have a Barnes & Noble (or similar large book store) near you, they will order books that they don't have in stock. However, I should warn you that the Stearns books are expensive. Another way to locate genealogy books is by subscribing to the GEN-MAT email list. On the GEN-MAT list people post the materials that they have for sale, materials that are wanted to purchase, etc. Many of the online book stores subscribe to this list. When they post their materials they usually give their web page address also. (This list is also through rootsweb.com so if you want to subscribe, just send email to GEN-MAT-L-request@rootsweb.com and put subscribe in the message part.) Hope this helps! Jeanne

    3. Doing some more searching using Yahoo & AltaVista and I came up with Tuttle Antiquarian Books who also has the Bond book if your interested. Price seems pretty excessive, but I guess that's a matter of opinion. Here's the information from their web page: TUTTLE ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS, INC. 28 South Main Street Rutland, Vermont 05701 Booksellers Since 1832 Telephone (802) 773-8229 FAX (802) 773-1493 E-Mail : tuttbook@interloc.com Web Site: http://www.abaa-booknet.com/usa/tuttle/ From Their Catalog: 2037. MA, WATERTOWN. Genealogies of the Families & Desc. of the Early Settlers of Watertown, MA, Includ. Waltham & Weston., By H. Bond M.D., 1,094pp., 1855, PHOTOCOPY; FLEX. VINYL COVERS, $220.00 To which is appended the Early Hist. of the Town. With Illus., Maps and Notes. 2 Vols. Hope this information is helpful. 1. On-Line Index to Bond's Watertown Book
    2. Chet Swanson
    3. Been trying to find an index to Bond's Watertown book? While trying to find an on-line source for the book I came across the following web page referral: http://sml.simplenet.com/kinnexions/bond/bond.htm. This web page starts out: "Index to Bond's Watertown Index prepared by Stephen M. Lawson I am constantly amazed at the wealth of information buried in the pages of Henry Bond's Early Settlers of Watertown. Even though I had a copy of this work, it was not until I found that Sophronia, wife of Eli Morey, was a Mason that I discovered the Bond had recorded Sophronia Mason as daughter of Elijah and Sally (Child) Mason of Woodstock CT and New Homer, NY on page 362. If I had had the full index, I would have discover that there were only 45 persons with the name Sophronia in this volume - and saved a couple years of searching! Sophronia's father-in-law Benoni Morey is on page 143. I am likewise amazed that Bond published this volume without the aid of a computer! A few statistics: 3475 surnames (plus variants), 36861 full names (27 persons without a surname), 63738 page references, John has 1213 surnames, Mary has 1898 surnames, only 29 John Smiths, but 107 Mary Stearns. There's just one entry for LAWSON -- George on page 76. This index was prepared over a period of several months in the early 1980's. The full title page of the volume used for indexing is found in the Contents section. Pagination doubtlessly varies between editions. The Table of Contents in the Contents section should permit conversion of page numbers from the Surnames section, and the Surnames section should permit conversion of page numbers from the Everyname section. Please excuse errors and omissions...." You may want to check out this web site. 3. I got my copy of VanWagenen's book on the Isaac Stearns family through Higginson Books. They almost always have an ad in THE GENEALOGICAL HELPER and the last time I check they had a better price through that ad than on their web page. I don't subscribe to the magazine any longer so you may want to check. However they do have a web page you may want to check out at: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/. Searching the site, here are the STEARNS books they currently list in their catalog. They are also starting to carry a lot of county/city history type books, but nothing on Massachusetts yet (at least not on line). STEARNS. Genealogy of the Stearns, Lanes, Holbrook & Warren fam., by M.L. Brook. 59p. 1898. $10.00 STEARNS. Genealogy & memoirs of Isaac Stearns & his desc., by A.V. Wagenen. 746p. 1901. $97.50 STEARNS. Gen. & memoirs of Charles & Nathaniel Stearns, & their desc., by A.V. Wagenen. 531p. 1901. $83.00 STEARNS. Mem. of the Stearns fam. incl. records of many desc., by W.E. Stearns. 173p. 1901. $23.50 As to Bond's Watertown, MA book I got my copy from a small reprinter in Utah. I think there are several sources, but not all the "reprinters" offer the newer edition. The NEHGS may be the main source of this book, but you'd have to check with them.
