    3. From: Sandra Hall <shall@pacbell.net> THE JACOB B c1774 he refers too would be one of the sons of John Stateler sr, son of Jacob Stateler and wife UNK. Jacob being son of Stephen Stadler/Stateler. IS THIS YOUR REPLY SANDRA.......SO ARE YOU SAYING THAT JOHN WHO MD MEYERS IS NOT SON OF THIS JACOB...SON OF STEPHEN? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Sr is not the son of Jacob. Jacob's son John was born about 1770 and was a minor at the time of his fathers death, and always lived in Mono. County. snip ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK......IS THIS IN AGREEMENT FOR CHILDREN OF STEPHEN...?? Children of Stephen Statler and an unk wife [or wives], order of birth undetermined were: 1.John Statler b 1733/40 d 1825 md Eve [Bryerly] widow of Thorn and lived near Blacksville; moved, with all of his family, to Licking Co, OH, very early 1800s 2. Catherine Statler born c1740, married George HILEY 3. Jacob Statler b 1740-45 d 1778 md UNK whose name is not given in any source known to me. 4. Joseph Statler born abt 1750?, reportedly killed by Indians but no contemporary record of it; if so, unmarried and no known issue 5. George Statler b 1766 d Sep 1836 md Elizabeth Cecelia Smeathers 1808 he moved to KY 1797 inherited the land of Stephen, which included Statlers Fort; this is the same tract later owned by SHRIVER, which CORE describes as one of the best on Dunkard Creek. Jacob's tract lay just below this one. 7. IF THIS JOHN IS NOT HIS SON....WHERE DOES HE BELONG THEN? 3rd child of Stephen Jacob 'Jake' Stateler B c1750 probably in Hampshire Co., Virginia D c1778 at Dolls Run, Monongalia Co although the date is not precisely known. JOHN Statler-THE MONONGALIA STORY- A Bicentennial Hist by Earl L. Gore 1974 Jacob Statler for whom Jake's Run (or Statler's Run) is named was killed by Indians in 1778. Pg173-George Stradler agreeable to last will and testament of Stephen Stradler intitled 200ac Dunker Creek known as Stradler Fort and adjoining lands claimed by heirs of Jacob Stradler. Settled in 1774. A group of men were returning to Statler's Fort from work in a nearby field when Indians opened fire on them to inc Jacob. Several were shot dead on the spot. The survivors fled to the fort, venturing out later to find the dead men "scalped and mangled...in a most shocking manner." The number of dead is uncertain, but nearly all accounts agree that Statler was among those killed. Statlers Fort was burned and Indians pursued to the Ohio, killing only 2 of them. Jacob lived at Dunkard Creek Monongalia Co WV (31) Jacob Not named in the will of Stephen Statler, but a lawsuit prosecuted by Jacob's son John stated that he was a grandson of Stephen Stadler and heir identifies Stephen as plaintiff's grandfather. Jacob's wife is unknown. It appears that she died relatively early, perhaps by 1784 but certainly while her son John was still a minor. (30) Statler's estate was administered by his widow, whose bondsmen were George Hiley and John Celcir (32) No records of the administration survived the 1796 fire. Fr Sandra Hall- Jacob has probable sons Joseph born 1770 and John born 1771 to 1774 These two were young orphans in 1783 when Stephen died. Children of Jacob Stateler and Unk [prob 5 kids] -John Stateler b bef Sep 8 1774 d bef May 28 1825 md prob Elizabeth Myers John indicated in Statler vs Core he attained his majority on or abt Sept 8 1795. This suit dealt with misuse of John's inheritance during his minority, by guardian George Hiley, who acted without bond as his guardian and who had sold some of the land for his own profit. In the bill, John Statler mentions his grandfather had died, leaving a minor son George [md Smeathers] your orator's uncle' who inherited land adjoining John's own claim. John also says his mother died while he was a minor and George Snider was bonded as his guardian and undertook to find what became of John's estate. The case was settled by agreement bet Statler and Michael Core, per statement of Aug 10 1802 in Statler's handwriting. The record of John Statler's family in his own handwriting and spelling was filed with the guardianship bonds for his younger children. Monongalia Court Records-Env 354-A sheet torn from a book, perhaps a bible does not indicate exact date of John Statler's marr nor birthdate of himself and wife. It is my [Rick Toothman's] conjecture the Elisabeth Myers whose child or children, appear on the REVERSE side of the page is same Elisabeth to whom John married. John Statler was sued for slander by Andrew Myers 1800, Court Rec, Env 199 which contains an affadavit by Catreen Raver or Raber which seems to be the origin of a story recited in Wilson, MITTONG, 66-67 although told there in a rather different version. Elizabeth Myers-"it may be conjectured she is same person as Elisabeth Myers identified on reverse side of family record as mother of Peter Myers b Feb 26 1800 and perhaps of another child, name omitted in record, born Mar 6 1802. Jacob and [Unknown] poss. a Wetzel or a Bonnet ?) were the parents of: [5 kids] i. John Stateler sr b 1773 md Elisabeth [Myers?] Elizabeth Myers and John Statler sr married January 1800. JOHN STATELER Sr, son of Jacob, born before 8 Sep 1774, d before 28 May 1825 Monongalia. He md Jan 1800, to Elisabeth, probably Myers. An undocumented family history published in 1927 gives his dates as 8 May 1733-22 February 1826 (41), but this is incorrect on both ends. By his own statement, John was a minor at the time of his father's death in 1778 and continued a minor for many years thereafter, attaining his majority sometime prior to 8 September 1795 (42). He cannot have been significantly over 21 at that time. Estate records indicate he was dead almost a year earlier than the date shown by Wilson (43). 1. Re: [STATLER] Early Stateler info
    2. Sandra Hall
    3. I think I know where most of the confusion comes from. I refer to John Sr as the John who married Eve (Byerly) Thorn. That was how he was known in the tax lists of Licking County, Ohio. The John who was the son of Jacob died 1778 was a generation younger. I have never seen him refered to as John Sr. His son John was a minor when he died. I refer to him as John of Monongalia County because he and his sons stayed there and did not come to Ohio. The note from John Statler: "I have info which makes me believe the father of James 1805 STATELER was Jacob b c1774 STATELER who, 1828 lived with his family Tully Township, either Marrow, Marion or Crawford Co Oh. >John Statler" This Jacob is probably the son of John and Eve Beyerly Thorn. He can't be the son of Monongalia County because he is about the same age.
